...until now. Thanks to a site I came across that had the entire series fansubbed that I could DDL and Netflix (which helped me get through the Chinglish episodes via rental), I was able to finally get through the series I had long wanted to see for so long. While I did read the manga adaptation of the series long before I could see the anime, I have to admit that the anime take on the series was quite different from the more grounded manga adaptation made by Obana-sensei. The anime made quite a number of add-ons to the material from the manga. Other than Sana being way more hyperactive than she was in the manga, the girl and other prominent characters are able to pull off antics you could find in a Looney Tunes cartoon. The show quite often breaks the fourth wall with cameo appearances from any J-pop bands responsible for the show's music, Miho Obana with her occasional appearances and the anime-only narrator Babbit poking fun of events taking place in the series as the show's narrator and often interacting with the show's cast. In other words, the comedy for Kodocha is way more unpredictable and nutty than you would find in the manga. But is this a bad thing? I'd say not really as this does allow the show to stand out more from the formulaic romp of shoujo romantic melodramas that were popular in the mid-1990s like Hana Yori Dango. While Kodocha does have its moments of melodrama, the comedy helps alleviate things to keep the series from being too depressing or overly dramatic. The series does do well at fleshing out all its prominent characters and delving into some touchy subject matter for younger viewers to know about like child abuse, abandonment, divorce and teen pregnancy. Besides the more manic comedy, the anime also created some additional storylines that were effectively blended into the material taken from the manga, as well as altering elements to the plot taken from later volumes of the manga. In particular, the anime allows Sana to meet her birth father and there is an entire America arc to the series that allowed more light to be shed on Naozumi's past that was never explored in the manga. Perhaps the major highlight of the series for me though had to be the chemistry of Sana and Hayama. Both these two are completely different in character from one another with Sana being lively, optimistic to help others, energetic and dense while Hayama is reserved, aloof, blunt, observant and smart. While the two like to get on each others nerves at points, they are quite independent for their young ages and support one another during any issues they face. Hayama is quick to fall for Sana once his character softens from her influence and the complications in their relationship that come about do create both touching and comical moments with the two. I didn't find my watch of the series to be all perfect though. The series does at points toss around filler and recap episodes in between major plot arcs of the series which while funny and often quite bizarre (Hayama moth chase, a game show episode, music prohibition, etc...), they don't really offer anything new to develop the characters or advance the plot. Even after going through the entire show, I still found Hayama's seiyuu to be a bit too reserved with the character as the voice didn't seem to emote all that well. In addition, the series ends without providing a proper resolution to Sana and Akito's relationship thanks in part to the situation getting too dragged out thanks to filler episodes and a final story arc in the later episodes. Despite my nitpicks, Kodocha was a long due and worthwhile anime for me to check out special thanks to the effective mix of comedy and drama and chemistry between Sana and Hayama. The additional content added for the anime allowed more exploration of the characters and a manic presentation of the everyday life faced by Sana and her loved ones, along side the fourth wall-breaking Babbit. I'm finally glad to have watched the anime adaptation of this series. Last updated Wednesday, April 13 2011. Created Wednesday, April 13 2011. |
I had first heard of Kodocha over five years ago while I was still a college student and it was a series I wanted to see for quite some time. Before I comment on my thoughts of the series, I have to admit that it was quite the challenge for me to find a means of even watching the show in its entirety the past several years. While a college student frequently torrenting fansubs, the series was too large to fit on my computer as I only had a 25 GB hard drive with the series hogging about 20-30 GB for all torrents of the series I could find online at the time. After graduating, a dial-up connection was my only means of Internet I could get out in my rural hometown. When I got wireless Internet months later, I learned torrenting was a no-go from my ISP which shot down my option to torrent anime and I had to go to enough lengths to find streaming and direct downloading sites to use as alternatives to watch anime since I could no longer torrent. Further complicating things in my hunt for Kodocha was that most sites I came across only had the more commonly known, latest and popular anime titles; Funimation was tightening up on its hunt to kill online distribution of their licensed titles; and Funi chose not to release the second half of Kodocha on DVD due to low sales. So whatever legal and illegal options I had on me would not allow me to easily see Miho Obana's shoujo hit series... ||||||||

Same producers as Fruits Basket so it has to be good. I watched episode 11 last night and discovered the down to earth straight to the heart feeling when you watch Fruits Basket. It is a sometimes funny and sometimes sad anime and I want to watch more episodes.

Through 1 episode... What a whacked-out comedy. Methinks I may like this. I got to see a version of episode 1 that has the original OP and the band references that FUNimation were forced to remove (Tokio).Last updated Thursday, August 03 2006. Created Thursday, August 03 2006. |

The characters are certainly unique and severely awesome. This is a high-energy show with lots of comedy, some good drama, and even a few serious parts thrown in.....almost all of which are identified as being too serious by one character or another and promptly reversed, usually by Sana, through some extreme hyperness. Lol....her name was ALMOST Samu. If you can find a decent release of this, do tell me where... The fansubbed version was well don up to ep 35, then all the rest are clearly shoddily done HK bootleg subs. I mean....when the name "Takeshi" is being clearly pronounced, why must the subtitle be "Woo". Oh well. I actually took it upon myself to correct the most glaring of translation and name errors myself, since the subtitles are all in seperate timing files. BUT! Even the horrible HK subs can't completely destroy the greatness of this anime. It's definately worth a watch. Last updated Saturday, July 09 2005. Created Saturday, July 09 2005. |

Marmalade Boy on acid" and "liquid crack". One critic said it was responsible for epileptic seizures among viewers (and I think he/she was serious). Though it is pretty much in a class by itself, the series KnO most reminds me of would be Jubei-Chan, what with the general wackiness, the unconventional charachter designs, and the multicolored SD animals flashing by between scenes (one review claimed that both series have the same creator). One word which seems to appear in every website review of KnO is "frenetic". This attitude is largely responsible for the show's charm, but unfortunately it also has the effect of making the dialogue go by so fast that I'm constantly pausing to read almost every subtitle. It almost gets to be more like reading a manga than watching TV. At one point I was watching a couple minutes' worth just to read the subs, then rewinding and rewatching the same segment to enjoy the wild animation. The result is that although KnO is an excellent series, watching episodes is somehow much more video-exhausting (that's a term I just invented) than usual, and I find it hard to watch more than one per day. Early on the subs got completely out of sync with lip movements, and I got so frustrated that I started thinking that even a half-assed dub job would be preferable. but this problem soon went away, which was fortunate because though watching it is still hard on the eyes, apparently a dubbed version is not yet an option, since KnO has yet to be officially licensed in the US--in part because of it's great length. I was surprised at how touching episode six, the end of the first story arc, was. I didn't expect this series to deal with topics like child abuse, homelessness and divorce. But it's just too wild (example: Sana running at around 100 mph) to take all the disturbing issues completely seriously. That's probably for the best--KnO doesn't ignore them altogether, yet remains hilarious. Wait a minute, I'm not expressing my approval of this show strongly enough. When it comes to quality, Kodomo no Omocha kicks ass to Hell and back! As a real world (some of the time), slice-of-life comedy/drama, KnO ranks with Maison Ikkoku as the best I've ever seen. The way Obana Miho skillfully intertwines comedy and drama is amazing. I think my favorite episode is #10, "Love Flew Like a Chicken". My favorite line (so far): "May I ask something? That squirrel... where does he crap?" --Hayama Last updated Tuesday, March 22 2005. Created Saturday, March 06 2004. |
I was bored one day, and figured I'd read about some of the series which were listed by their Japanese titles and which I knew nothing about. When I came to this particular page the highly enthusiastic praise (and the reference to "an elementary school girl with a pimp") piqued my interest. I've just completed watching the first 26 episodes (and I hear there are something like 102 episodes altogether). This show has been described on other websites as "||||||||

Don't judge it by the score I give. It's ridiculous, it's stupid, it's absurd, but it's excessively fun. I at least would laughed hard once when watching 90% of the espisodes. I especially like the white bat(s) running around, saying and doing stupid but hilarious things. There are some serious episodes somehow touching, but in general, it's an anime for laugh ONLY and ONLY. Last updated Thursday, January 02 2003. Created Thursday, January 02 2003. |

Kodomo no Omocha is one of many anime shows where you will wonder what the creators were smoking. The show is so insanely funny, Sana is one of the best characters ever! The premise of funny as it is, and if the mention that Rei is Sana's pimp, don't be scared off. Sana just thinks that a pimp is a manager, which is what Rei is. All the characters are great, Hayama is interesting and you do feel sorry for him what with his family life and all. I love Hayama's little leopard transformation, it's so cute and funny. Sana's mom is very interesting, with a squirrel living on her head and all. One of the best things of the show is Sana's little raps. I was falling off my couch laughing at it the first time she did it. Sana's voice actress does a fantastic job sounding so insanely funny. The animation isn't the best, but who gives a crap when you're so busy laughing and enjoying the great story and characters? To end my review of Kodocha, Obana Miho is a goddess of comedy!!

Kodacha is one of the funniest things I've seen. Sana-chan is the oddest girl I've ever seen animated or otherwise. I just don't know what to say about this show. Just know that if you don't watch it you are missing out, it's so worth the time and effort it takes to watch it (and believe me it takes effort). Last updated Monday, May 07 2001. Usually when I watch an anime, I like to see humour, drama, good characters, and a good storyline; this anime has all that. At first glance, it may seems like it's just some silly storyless anime made only for laughs. NOT SO! True, the anime as I have already stated is HILLARIOUS and silly, but behind all that fun and sillieness it is surprising to see how realistic it really is. More than one episode of Kodacha made me cry my eyes out, or want to strangle one of the characters (namely that trumpet-playing kid whose name I forgot), The art and animation of this anime isn't too good. It's okay and it's bearable to watch at the beginning, after a while it either gets better or grows on you. The music is SO VERY addictive, especially Sana's raps! (I love the cooking episode). Overall, I say BUY BUY BUY! Buy this anime first chance you get, you won't be dissapointed! Even my brother likes Kodacha (and he doesnt't care for anime that much). HE JUSTS SITS AND HOWLS AT THE MOON!
A LONE RACCOON OR A LONE PIG WOULD BE MORE FUN!
A lone pig?
A LONE PIG!!! HAHAHAHA!
Just one of many Sana-chan raps that make up the #1 reason to see this anime (goddamn the creator after episode 20 when there are no longer raps on the Nori-Nori, I wept for awhile after that). On a whole though, <a href="https://anime.mikomi.org/series/1/Kodomo%20no%20Omocha.html" class="wiki">Kodocha is a truly wonderful anime. It is spastically funny. The humor is off the wall. It is odd and not for people who aren't REALLY into anime.
The music is wonderful, I have the OP and ED songs on my computer and a burned CD or two. The story is pretty great so far (I have only seen up til episode 24). And I love the characters (except for that damn trumpet player kid, he really annoys me).
A ton of laughs. Too bad it probably will never be liscensed.

Evangelion). Tons of laughs in every episode. It's just jam packed with silliness! However, beyond the gags and comedy, there happens to lie some rather serious undertones, which make the story even more interesting. There are tons of episodes to this series, and only 28 of them are fansubbed at the moment, so order a volume now!!

Kodocha. However, it is way out there. Look up the word frenetic in the dictionary and there is Sana-chan (also see "left field"). From what I gather, her character was a little more down to Earth in the OAV (which predated this series). However, I was a little disappointed in the series after the 8th episode. I will not give anything away (I hate that), but suffice it to say I thought the almost ephemeral balance of truly funny antics and sudden drama lost quite a bit after that episode. This may have had to do with the story line which was simply too good in the beginning to do anything other than sort of whimper out. Even the comedy didn't seem as good. I mean you can't touch those silly glasses or the dancing alarm clock, and all that stuff was in the beginning. Despite the rather limited frame rates and average art, the direction was quite good. I guess I'll give that points under animation. Pity, though, that this too seemed to suffer later on. I've only seen the first the first 20 eps of this 70 plus ep series. I still plan to get the later eps as they become available. And quite frankly I don't know how it could have maintained the level that it did in the beginning. I give this a buy, but if it ever came out on DVD I think I'd just get the first 8 episodes. But, boy, I'd get those episodes immediately! The op and ed songs are quite catchy, definitely a must addition to anyone's mp3 library. Not that I would condone listening to mp3's for more than 24 hours before erasing them! (that is 24 hours of actual listening time right -- I figure that gives me at least two years) Last updated Monday, December 13 1999. Created Monday, December 13 1999. |

HA~YA~MA! =P Kodacha is the story of Sana-chan, a child star on a television show, and of Hayama Akito, eerily calm, child delinquent that is just KAKKOI... ^_-* It's zany! It's fun! It's HYPER!
