Prison of the Past is set up like a typical TV special of the "red jacket" Lupin III series having its solid mix of action and comedy with Lupin III and his gang overcoming a worst evil threat throughout the special's run. Here, Lupin and his gang are seemingly trying to pull a prison break, yet find there is more going on beneath the surface as they learn more about the shady activity of the prison that they break into and have to rescue Jigen, who becomes a prisoner. All the main Lupin characters have something they get to do throughout this TV special and this has its humorous moments such as Zenigata's young assistant being a surprisingly skilled pickpocket and Goemon getting curious over eating sandwiches. Prison of the Past doesn't break any new ground for the decades old Lupin III franchise as far as what it has to offer. But for a TV special following the classic action-comedy format of the "red jacket" series, it is still solid entertainment.
