Vampires and Humans used to CoExist. So much so that they had children called Dunpeals. This is the story of the most powerful of them all, Vampire Hunter D. In this story D is hired to save a girl named Charlotte who was kidnapped by the Vampire Meyer Link. The problem? Charlotte doesn't want to go home.

D also has to deal with a professional group of bounty hunters, a killer dryad, a double werewolf, a vampire hating sheriff, a ghost, and the issues of his own legacy.

While there is still barely any depth given to D's character, this movie is an improvement over the original Vampire Hunter D by featuring a storyline with plot twists and revelations concerning the characters that will keep you watching the movie. With all this going on, characters are more fleshed out in personality and are just as interesting to check out as D.

Artwork for this movie was very slick featuring dark colors and dreary, gothic environments that fit with the mood of this movie. Character designs did well to relect the dark mood of this series with a great amount od detail. D's design made him look much more like a vampire this time around in the movie. Action scenes were very fluid and quite the sight to behold as not a single bit of detail was lost during any fights in this movie.

If you want a great vampire hunting movie, Bloodlust should do the job very well for you.

I should have done a review of this a long time ago. This is what Vampire Hunter D is all about. The animation is stunning along with the characters. To do a quick compare and contrast with the original VHD movie, the original is very dark and focused on the hero, D. Bloodlust focuses on two points, 1) A "forbidden love" with a vampire and human, and 2) D chase to retrieve the human at any cost. Between the original and Bloodlust's animation, of course Bloodlust wins that contest. I certainly won't knock on the animation of the original. That paved the way (along with other Streamline Pictures' movies) for many of the new anime we have seen and have yet to be seen.

The movie itself was paced well. Enough story and action to keep you interested. This would be on my top 10 list of all-time favorites. Not much to say after that since Bloodlust speaks for itself.

This is a thoroughly excellent movie, and rivals Macross and Ghost in the Shell as my favorite anime feature films. Each facet of the film is done with obvious detail and quality. The only gripe I have is I think the Meyer-Charlotte romance was a bit too overplayed and over-verbalized, like Disney or something. We can understand the passion and angst of their forbidden love by the situations; the characters don't have to say what's on their mind all the time. It also slowed the movie down in tense moments. However, the rest was stunning, and the Marcus Gang and Barberoi were each clever and creative. The visuals and animation are breathtaking, and the subtle yet intense music compliments the different moods. The movie's conclusion pushed the anime limits of cheese (I think they tried to make this film a bit too Americanized, hence the English-speaking characters). The combat scenes were fantastic, the violence was proportional to the story, and the film was well paced, unlike it's crude 1980's predecessor. It's worth buying and watching several times over.

This is a badass anime that once you watch, you'll get hooked. It is the second part of the first version of Vampire Hunter D in which aired in the US in the 1980s. D has always been the man to hunt down the evil shadows of his own background weavers but throughout both movies, he'll prove to be the most masterful of vampire hunters.
It's fast ninja style techniques occuppied into this movie of Bloodlust just keeps you on your seat, wondering with a pounding heart of what kind of action will come next. This is what I enjoyed most about Bloodlust because even though you know that D can own, the opposing side always seems to hold a little thread of his life in their hands. It's action and suspense that makes the entire movie fabulous.
The artwork is both compelling and detailed in a way that almost brings out the feelings or emotions of the characters. As for the music, you really don't pay attention to it but once in a while it kicks in so I guess it fits with the plot somehow. But it doesn't really matter because you're so tied up into the whole outline of the story. Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust will own you!

Vampire Hunter D is a cult classic but lets get things straight it's no masterpiece. The sequel, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, is an amazing piece of work. There is actually a pretty good story in this one, D is hired to track down a women who has been kidnapped by the vampire Meier Link. He is joined on this quest by a team of vampire hunters called the Marcus brothers. the story unfolds to have many plot twists and revelations. The character designs are top quality, they are richly detailed. the art and animation are very fluid and nicely designed. The music for this is very "intense" and sets the moods perfectly, like speeds up for fight scenes, and is well orchastrated. overall i think that this isntallment is on another level when compared to its predecessor. This is a true masterpiece that can appeal to any anime fan alike. An instant classic.

Unlike its "predecessor" this actually has a good story plot. Music is beautiful and well orchestrated, rivaling the quality of Ah! My Goddess - The Movie.
The animation is very stunning, with the gothic setup very well shown, and the whole enviroment and D himself (or itself considering he is a vampire) was given a major overhaul in the looks department to better suit his character. A horror anime that will stun all who watch it. Tons of blood, hacking of monsters, and D's parasite hand, whom acts as comic relief. The character design is by Yoshitaka Amano, the designer of FF (Final Fantasy) characters, as anyone whom seen some of the artbooks made for the various games (especially FFVI) will find out the clear and crisp line and detail.
Overall this is definately worth buying the dvd, as it is imo the best vampire anime movie ever made.

I can't find a single thing about this movie that I didn't like. The music really fits the movie well. The characters are unique and interesting.
D reminds me of a vampire version of Clint Eastwood; the quiet loner who is more into action than words.
I especially like the ending of the movie. It shows the kinder, human side of D.
I hope there will be more Vampire Hunter D movies to eventualy follow. It would be really cool to see one about D and his father(Dracula)!

From everything I had heard of this movie it was a big disappointment. The main area that was lacking was the characters, especially D. I really didn't care what happened too him. He was cool to watch but there's a reason why Spock was a supporting character in StarTrek for the most part. The most emotion he showed was gripping the reins of the horse tighter to shut the parasite in his hand up. Besides that the animation, story and most of the other characters were pretty good.

not much into vampire stories, but this one had a great story. beautiful artwork and detail was put into this anime and the action scenes were awesome. especially that demon that could turn into multiple amounts of spikes hoping to toothpickize any opponent. hehe, toothpickize XDDDD
the design of each character was very well done, it's usually kill off the quiet one first though...i tell you it's those quiet ones that are the threat...that's why they always die first ~_~ well, my favorite part was when D and that blonde chick made a promise to each other that whoever died first would recieve flowers from the other, it had such a great ending to it that brought tears to my eyes that made me feel sorry for D due to his immortality and loneliness in the world. it also shows the temptations of a vampire for sucking blood no matter how hard they try to hold back. i thought that watching the veins sort of reveal themselves like an x-ray and start pulsing like that looked really awesome.
so, go see it, it's a great film.

When VHD: Bloodlust came out, I wasn't too very interested. Having recently got the chance to watch the film though, I know now I should have been. VHD:B is top notch so far as dark anime goes. From the opening scene, watching the crosses twist and crumble as the dark carriage passes by, you know you're in for something good. VHD:B doesn't disappoint.
First off, D has been given a major upgrade. He looks more vampire like, he looks stronger and badder than ever before. The new art helps much, of course. D is hired to find a girl named Charlotte, dead or alive, who has been taken by a vampire from her home. Adding to the mix is a bounty team already has a head start on D, and each member of this team could well have his/her own anime. These are no second rate fill-ins, these folks are every bit as interesting as D. The vampire in question doesn't disappoint either, showing the full force of his powers from the very first scenes.
All in all, if you're looking for something darker and blood filled, watch this show. It looks dang good, the english voices are much better than you'd expect, and things just simply click. It's well worthy of the VHD name, and surpasses the original in nearly every way.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust follows D, a half human half vampire, vampire slayer. D is hired by a human woman named Charlotte's family, to find her and bring her home. According to her brother she was 'kidnapped' by the vampire, Meier Link.

En route to retrieving Charlotte, D becomes engaged in several entertaining battles. There's enough action in this film to keep everyone interested, and a bit of romance for those who like that kind of stuff. It's alright if this is considered "Americanized", because writer Hideyuki Kikuchi (Asahi Sonorama), didn't set Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust in Japan. He said he wanted it to be more like a Western movie.

The character designs are great, because it's based on Amano's art. The animation's gorgeous. The character personalities are all different, like each of the Marcus Brothers. Leila's really tough, and is not the stereotypical 'woman-in-distress'. And the villains and fight scenes are excellent.

I believe Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust was originally recorded in English, not Japanese, and the voices all suit the characters.

The music for this movie are instrumental songs, with the theme song Tooku Made, performed by Do As Infinity. I don't understand why that's the theme song when you don't even hear it in the movie.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust can be purchased for $15.00 - $25.00.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is by far my favorite anime. Each and every detail is perfectly scripted out and every single facet of this piece is magnificent.
The story od D, a lone dunpeal, is both poignant and tragic. As the son of the Vampire King, D has a terrible ancestry that he tries desperately to relieve himself from. I think this piece of D's search for salvation deserves a round of applause. This anime is fanfastic!

Having been impressed by the first Vampire Hunter D years ago, this one blew me away. The detail that went into the animation is very high quality, and the show itself is a good example of anime as art. The animation is very smooth, and highlights well the supernatural abilities of the characters. The characters themselves are for the most part very cool (with the exception of the main female character, who got on my nerves).
D himself is once again a well-thought-out, mysterious character, though used a bit differently than in the '85 show. The human hunter-characters are more than just a foil, and are fairly well-characterized. While not all of the enemies are exactly three-dimensional characters, every one of them has a reason for his or her actions, a 'detail' that can be a rare thing in this type of story (i.e. motivation). And the 'ultimate baddie' of the show sort of surprised me...
I highly recommend this show, though it's not for everyone. It is, of course, violent. Nevertheless, it has a very interesting message, as did the last D, as fits well with D's mixed heritage and the resulting dichotomy.

10,000 years in the future, an aging man's greatest fear has been realized, as his youngest daughter Charlotte Elbourne has been kidnapped by Meier Link, a powerful vampire. In order to capture him, he's enlisted two sets of vampire hunters: the young, upstart Markus Hunters and the greatest vampire hunter of all time: D. D has never faced competition before, but that's the least of his worries: Charlotte Elbourne wasn't kidnapped, but fled with Meier because she loves him!
Dripping with suspense and drama that far succeeds the previous movie, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is by far one of the most impressive anime's around.
ART/ANIMATION
The charachters are drawn flawlessly. There's a painstaking amount of detail in this movie, and most of it is unnoticed without multiple watchings. Whether it's the shining blade of D's sword or the swirls of Meier Link's cape, this is truly more a piece of art than a single movie.
CHARACHTER DESIGN
D remains true to his original concept as a lone Dunpeal (a vampire/human hybrid) who is despised by humans for his heritage and vampires for his occupation. Changing charachters for this film is Left Hand, D's companion who happens to be...well, his left hand. Rather than the somber, dreary charachter from the first film, we see a wise-cracking friend, who knows more about D than perhaps even D knows.
New charachters the Markus' are handled exquisitly, and are dealt with as extremely prejudiced vampire hunters, usually getting in over their heads. Also, making Leila, the adoptive Markus sister and female lead, more of a loner like D was a very nice touch.
New enemy Meier Link is handled in a similar fashion, shown in a light similar to one D is in: though he is not ashamed of his vampiric side, it is making his feelins for Charlotte incredibly difficult to deal with. Several moments in the movie are definitive of his true emotions for her, such as when he refuses to turn her into a vampire to protect her from the loneliness.
MUSIC
One cannot truly judge the music, for you can't really notice it. In all honesty, the music is usually lost in the beauty of the animation. Once you go back and listen to it, however, you're treated to a beautiful, symphonic blend for the senses. Truly a treat for the ears.
SERIES STORY
VHD: Bloodlust is dripping with plot twists that hold you until the end. The second installment of this now classic series is simply astonishing, and leaves fans begging for more. Plain and simple, if you don't have it, buy it. If you can't buy it, steal it. If you can't steal it, burn it off the internet. Best of all, watching Bloodlust won't affect or ruin plot of the original. If you've never seen the original Vampire Hunter D, I'd recommend seeing this one first: it'll make the whole experience a little more bearable for the non-anime fans.

Wow. I first got interested in this movie when I saw a music video using some clips from it. Then I wandered into a free showing at a con and couldn't tear myself away. For the first time, I think I understand why some people see vampires as sexy--something I never was able to "get" before. The artwork is truly breathtaking. While the gothic, futuristic, and Wild West elements don't quite hang together, the overall effect is so stunning that I can't bring myself to take off a whole point for it. I think some of those images haunted my dreams the night I saw it. The plot is fairly basic (competing hunters attempt to rescue a wealthy young woman kidnapped by a handsome and powerful vampire), but it's handled stylishly. I saw this movie in English; if I understand correctly, there is no Japanese dub.

I figure that if I enjoyed the movie this much, when I'm not a vampire fan to begin with, someone who is really into vampires should love it.

Just to confirm all previous reviews: it rocks!
I was working all day and went back home late. After dinner, I went ahead to watch Cowboy Bebop Movie. I got kinda sleepy while watching that movie, which I finished watching before midnight. Then I was thinking to go ahead and see this new D that everyone was talking about, and after the first few minutes I was wide awake!
I watched the old D before, and at that time I thought that the movie is cool enough, with good story to tell and nice action scenes, yet the new D surely a great improvement! The new D seemed to have less D action than before, but the whole story improved with a nice (unthinkable) ending. Love it!
The new D has a different story to tell than the old D, so both movies are standalone. However, if you never seen any D before, I suggest you to see and enjoy the first D, then continue with the new D. You will be pleased.

Im not to sure is VAMPIRE HUNTER D: BLOODLUST was intended to be a prequel or sequel for its cult classic predecessor VAMPIRE HUNTER D but I have to say I was far more fond of this adaptation of the legendary D.
I think my biggest fear going in was this was going to be BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE all over again. Visually beautiful with a lacking story line to make it and overall over hyped movie.
Nope, not the case at all.
To say the animation and artwork is stunning would be a horrible understatement as fluid motion and finite details made BLOODLUST poetry in motion. If youre expecting more to be revealed about the infamous vampire hunter youll be disappointed as the competition by the name of the Marcus Brothers all but steal the show right out from under D. While I like the makeover to make D look even more badass than in his film debut, I was far more interested in the villain of the plot, Meier Link, the Vampire D and the Marcus Brothers are hunting.
A lot more effort was made plotwise for this film as I found myself very interested to see how it would all turn out. But fear not all ye who seek gore for there be a plenty, after all it wouldnt be D if limbs and blood werent flying through the air.
Well I dont want to give away too much of the plot but Ill say that its great if youre in a gothic, creep-out kind of mood or just looking for some high-octane action.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is one of the strongest animes I have seen. With beautiful art, breathtaking animation, a lush score and, importantly, an engaging story, D 2000 is far superior to the 1985 version.
I was fortunate enough to see it in the theatre during a limited run in Minneapolis and D 2000 blew me away. What an experiance! I liked the origional OK, but never considered it anything special, so I went in not expecting much. I was unprepared for the incredible experience that awaited me.
The animation is nothing short of excellent, nearly a perfect 10, with high frame rates and an insane amount of detail. Very consistant high quality sucks one into the movie, and the ambitious animation only slightly stumbles a few times, and not enough to really even be worth mentioning.
The character designs are very impressive, mixing gothic with futuristic in an interesting combination that works strangely well. I particularly liked D's main opponent, Meier Link. Stylish, dark, and very cool.
A rich, orchestrated musical score accompanies the film, and it is one of my personal favorites. The music fit perfectly, understated and dramatic, not obnoxiously shoved in the viewer's face.
The story is complex and interesting, I barely noticed that two hours had gone by. The twists continued right up till the end credits. The engaging story presents the viewer with a tantalizing glimpse of D's world, and leaves one wanting more. Oh how I hope for another movie or TV show that continues what Bloodlust started!
D 2000 is a definate buy when it becomes available, with a beautiful gothic look, well-crafted story-telling, an excellent soundtrack, and even a decent dub (a rarity for Urban Vision...) In a sea of bad or at best mediocre vampire animes, D 2000 stands triumphantly head and shoulders above them. Fans of the 1985 Vampire Hunter D can enjoy a much better version of D and new comers have a treat in store for them.
