This was one of the more decent Lupin III TV specials I seen with its focus on Lupin and the gang trying to retrieve a gold brick treasury from a mafia crime boss and a descendant of Rasputin with psychic powers and a penchant for sticking his finger in the orifices of a character's face. The Lupin "girl of the film" is a descendant of the Russian czar assisting Lupin and pals with the heist. Lupin, Jigen and Fujiko are decent in their roles for this movie, while Goemon is yet again reduced to an incompetent fool due to the plot requiring his use of Zantetsuken to be neutralized and Zenigata is pretty much worthless here. Not to mention this baby is one of the lower quality animated Lupin titles as animation shortcuts and errors are pretty noticeable here. Still, the film offers up enough twists in its plot to keep things engaging and the Rasputin baddie is rather competent in his manipulations to get what he wants up to the final confrontation with Lupin and the gang. From Russia with Love doesn't offer anything new that you would expect from the typical Lupin III formula. But still, it is a decent offering within the franchise's many animated adaptations.

Lupin III titles. Basically, Lupin is tracking down 500 tons of gold that the communist didn't get their hands on when the deposed the Czar. Apparently, the Czar and his family escaped and the gold somehow managed to get to Texas where it has been sitting all this time. Now it is owned by a New York mob boss. To complicate matters, Fujiko and Judy (a decendant of the Czar through Anistasia) are working together to get the gold. So is the decendant of Rasuputan -- who's also telepathic and controls people all over the world (like the President of the United States).
Hmmm...the characters all sucked in this TV special. The animation is horrible. We have lots of repeating loops where the same animation is used several times in a row. Hideous! Fujiko looks unattractive in this one. Goemon is a loser. Jigen and Lupin are OK at best. And Zenegata is wasted. Very little humor, a bad story, and poor character designs. It's hard to know which is worse of the bottom-dwelling Lupin titles! Last updated Friday, March 07 2003. Created Friday, March 07 2003. |
