Lupin Sansei (2015)
In this fifth Lupin III TV series, the exploits of Lupin and his gang are explored within various Italian locales mixing around self-contained and ongoing plot developments as this series introduces a few regular characters who Lupin and his gang interact with at varying points throughout the series. Unlike many TV specials and movies for Lupin III where characters exclusive to them mostly feel like they are tacked on and lack much in the way of dimension, the 24-episode length of The Italian Adventure offers plenty of time for the new characters to be fleshed out and offer enough personality where you can grow to care for them. Rebecca's character adds some unique twists to the typical Lupin III formula as she takes on the role of Lupin's self-proclaimed wife and frequently butts in on his thefts, while MI6 agent Nyx serves as a convincing threat to Lupin's gang at points in the series with his tactics. For the most part, the series does a great job of offering both episodic plots focused on a typical Lupin theft while adding in ongoing developments involving the new characters seen in Italian Adventure. It maintains the lighter versions of the members of Lupin's gang that have been around since the Red Jacket series, while maintaining the hard-boiled spin on Zenigata's character that fans were introduced to from The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. Overall, The Italian Adventure is a unique take on the typical Lupin III formula as many of the prominent elements to it are still there, but with the new characters contributing enough to the series to add some unique spins on said elements. A definite recommendation for Lupin III fans.
