Part 2 incarnations of the characters with Lupin's gang only stealing from those who are corrupt or within the crime world and Zenigata reduced to a comical buffoon compared to his more competent incarnations in later installments of the franchise. Visually, the animation for the series is easily among the most inconsistent of any Lupin anime I've seen as the series did initially have a more detailed art style before gradually returning to a style closer to Part 2 and then getting much more exaggerated with its art style and character movements for the second half of the series. Plus, characters appeared off-model fairly often throughout the series and said animation had apparently gone through a number of animation studios during the show's 50-episode production. Before I completed the series, Part 3 was one of the few Lupin III anime I had yet to see up to this point and I was familiar with the supposed negative perception many fans had with it. While I can see where the more exaggerated direction of the series may not be everyone's cup of tea if you've seen more recent installments of the franchise that have more grounded storytelling, I didn't pay it any mind since the story structure and humor for each episode was no different from the two 1970s TV anime, just dialed way up in terms of the means Lupin and other characters pull to either steal or protect a valuable item. I'd at least recommend seeing the series once if you're a Lupin III fan. Last updated Friday, November 26 2021. Created Friday, November 26 2021. |
Of all the Lupin III anime I've seen, this third TV series offers the more absurd and nonsensical plots that Lupin and his gang get involved with for thefts or aiding the less fortunate. There is a greater emphasis on slapstick humor with many episodes in this series, making it feel more on par with what you could find in an American Looney Tunes cartoon. I was entertained with the comedy and thefts taken on by Lupin and his gang for the most part, in spite of some popular misconceptions that many frowned upon the more slapstick direction of the series. Part 3 still follows the episodic storytelling format of the prior two TV anime, largely taking after the ||||||||

It took me over 17 years to get through this series. I gotta say, it was very rough at times. That's because most of the stories in this series are incredibly stupid. Indeed, when I episode reviewed it on my blog, I frequently note how often the story is dumb, pointless, utter nonsense, meandering, etc. For example, there's a episode where kids of different races claim Lupin, Jigen, or Goemon as their father. No one questions, "How could a Japanese man be the father of a white child? Or a black child? When there were rough gems of a good story, things were often trashed in favor of stupidity. The series did one interesting thing in that they had a two part episode. It is a shame the story there wasn't that good either. To be honest, I'm stunned that the series got 50 episodes. As to the art and animation, the first few episodes are certainly different. By episode 10, the character designs started changing. By episode 15, things settled to a more "tradition" character design for Lupin and company. And yet through all that, there are a few episodes where the characters just look hideous. Bottom line: As an old Lupin III fan, I appreciated watching this series for the education. But I'm not going to lie, it often became a slog to get through. Outside of hardcore Lupin III fans, I see no value in this series. Last updated Friday, November 01 2024. Created Saturday, March 24 2007. |
