It was the moment when Tojima 'transformed'' while fighting some bullies that I realized that comedy was a major element in this show, and that it was brilliantly written. Everything fell into place, so to speak, rather than the writer nursing me through a plot which he/she didn't think I'd be able to comprehend on my own. It is by pretending to be serious that this show is humorous. Actually, it is both serious and humorous--It has an engaging story and is funny too. Many shows can't even manage to be one or the other, much less both. I got the feeling that this show was strongly reminding me of another anime with a similar premise that I had watched at some point, but I couldn't name it; I now think it was most likely Samurai Flamenco. Basically, some punks who pretend to be members of 'Shocker', the evil organization that Kamen Rider fought against, have been mugging people, so Tojima has a golden opportunity to become his hero. And he has never stopped the demanding exercise regimen that he began as a boy, so he has the physical strength that is needed ("at some point I had gotten strong enough to go toe-to-toe with a bear"). At the end we learn that Tojima isn't the only adult who would like to become Kamen Rider, and another one doesn't think Tojima is doing a very good job of it. I was left wishing I could watch episode two rightaway. I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be my favorite anime of the season.
