Think of this as an alternate and compressed take of the first arc to Dragon Ball. This movie goes through much of the same plot structure and character gags that the Pilaf saga had, but is much more fast-paced being at a mere 50 minutes and features a different group of villains that Goku and pals have to confront. The villains here are more convincingly threatening than Pilaf, but they don't have much in the way of personality compared to the bumbling childish emperor. Plus, the humor coming off the notable character quirks of Goku and pals here aren't as fun since the movie rushes through the basic aspects of their characters. On the plus side, the animation here is more polished and not so rough on lining of characters and scenery. Plus, the animation is improved with fluid movement, camera shots edited as such to create convincing movement and minimum presence of shortcuts. Otherwise, this is more an extra treat for Dragon Ball fans than a stand-alone film that can be enjoyed by those not fans of the long-running franchise.
