Continuity-wise, this movie is supposed to be set during the battle with Frieza on Namek though there are enough contradictions with this scenario since Goku, Krillin, Piccolo, and Gohan would either have already been on Namek or still dead during this point. The movie plays out no differently from your typical DBZ movie with Lord Slug overwhelming Goku and pals before Goku conveniently recovers his strength from some deus ex machina to slay Slug. It looked like the film's main selling point was that it was supposedly going to be the anime debut of Goku's Super Saiyan form, a few months before its actual appearance in the TV anime during the Frieza saga during DBZ's original airing. However, this was not faithfully depicted in appearance within the film and did not actually contribute to Slug's defeat thus making the marketing gimmick for this film all the more pointless. Overall, yet another weak film among the DBZ movies.
