Unlike past DBZ movies that have no actual continuity to the TV anime, Battle of Gods actually serves as a sequel to the series proper with its introduction of Bills and Whis to the series mythos. Despite the seriousness of the massive threat that both pose to the Z Fighters, the mood of the movie is actually rather light for the most drop as Bulma's birthday party serves as a backdrop to allow fans of the series to reconnect with their favorite characters since nothing new had been made for the franchise for up to a decade at that point. A good deal of comical moments come from the quirks of the cast, some referential jokes to earlier events in the series, and our two new characters mingling in with the party before things go downhill with Bills tossing a tantrum. Beyond that, the series is still typical DBZ with how its fight scenes are handled. While the updated animation helps to give more cleaner and crisp details for familiar settings and character designs in the series, the attempt to implement CG animation during Goku's dragged-out final battle with Bills later in the film leads to some awkward clashing for it with the regular animation. Otherwise, Battle of Gods felt like an extended episode of DBZ while retaining both its comedy and fast-paced action. Long-time fans of the franchise are likely to be interested in checking this out.
