This trilogy of movies basically takes animated footage from the original Gundam series and streamlines the events of it to get rid of any filler and more absurd elements (some of the weapons and mecha) from the original series, mixed in with new animated footage used for the later two parts of the movie series. To a great extent, this method works rather well as major plot and character elements from the original series still get their focus such as details on major Zeon foes that the White Base crew face, Char's connections to Sayla and Amuro adjusting to becoming a soldier. A major improvement with this film trilogy is that Newtypes are brought up and focused on starting much earlier in the trilogy compared to their sudden introduction in the original TV show's later episodes.

However, this format does have its flaws. There are some inconsistencies with the animated footage used as some details seen in scenes or camera shots don't flow with previous scenes and there are a fair number of jarring transitions as well. The streamlining also muddles the quality of some aspects to the original series as the introduction of later weapons from Zeon and Federation forces suddenly appear without any focus or buildup and some minor plot elements such as Mirai's complicated love developments feel rushed and poorly explored.

If you are well into watching enough titles in the Gundam franchise, this movie trilogy is a solid watch having its fair share of positives over the TV series and also having its issues from using the TV anime's animated footage. Otherwise, I'd recommend you at least watch the TV series before this trilogy as its slower pacing makes the flow of the plot feel more natural to a greater extent than the movies.

This is the classical Gundam. The series was created on 1979 so was the first movie. The Animation was old and made no use of computers whatso ever. I was probably was too kind to give its animation a good rating but it was done 23 years ago and has one of the best stories ever told so I forgave its old animation. The first two movies start of slow but have lots of character development. The last movie was done extremely well. It was almost perfect much like the later part of Gundam. The three movies try to cram 43 episodes and do a good job even though many things were cut out. Comparing with the series and the movie, the movie is cramped however the movie replaces the G-Fighter modules with the better Core Booster. Zeta Gundam is better than Mobile suit Gundam IMO but Mobile suit Gundam set the standard of what a gundam series should be. It would be either my second or third favourites.

This was a pretty good anime, the beginning of it all based on the failed television series. All the characters were well done (better than Gundam W) and the rivalry between Amuro and Char was just amazing. The theme between war and humanity was alright, but I believe the 0080 movies told it a lot better. Watch it though for nostalgic reason and its actually pretty good. Following this series, watch Char's Counterattack, an awesome sequel to this series.

This is the classic gundam movies. My tape puts the copy wright at 1981 and I'm told that for it's time it was exceptional. The animation and art are definatly not up to todays standards by any strech of the imagination. But if you like big mech series and want to see a little of anime's history this is definatly worth watching. personally I liked 0080 and 0083 much better. these are very clean if not exceptionally entertaining movies

They were OK, but the last one was really werd! I would say that Gundam Wing was taken off these movies, but Gundam Wing is a LOT better! And it was nothing compared to 0080, which is the best of all the Gundam shows...well I still like Gundam Wing the most, but I was left with a lot to think about with 0080!
