Seven months after the One Year War ended, the remnants of the Principality of Zeon reform as the Republic of Zeon and continue to battle. Daryl had piloted the mobile suit Psycho Zaku in the end of the war at the "Thunderbolt Sector," where the Moore Brotherhood's fleet was annihilated. After losing the Psycho Zaku, Daryl descends to Earth and takes up an intelligence position to gain information about the South Seas Alliance, a military group within the Earth Federation. Io, who faced off against Daryl, is selected to pilot the prototype mobile suit Atlas Gundam and heads toward Earth.

This second season of Gundam Thunderbolt is set following the end of the One Year War after Io and a number of Federation prisoners of war escape captivity from the Zeons during the attack on A Baoa Qu, and Daryl remains with the surviving members of the Zeon military. The series devotes time to exploring how both leads are doing following the end of the One Year War before both their factions come at odds with a cult of devoutly religious mecha pilots called the South Seas Alliance. This is where I found the majority of my issues with Thunderbolt's second season as while its first season used elements of earlier UC Gundam lore to develop its more grounded plot while adding in some new storytelling elements, this second season doesn't have as much time to focus on the South Seas Alliance beyond having as-of-now unknown motives to attack Federation and Zeon forces. This does create a solid shocking twist for its second half involving a major character from the first series that was assumed killed. Sadly though, the series is left open-ended as the South Seas Alliance are still at large. Fans of the first series will be delighted to know that the impressive visuals and jazz soundtrack used from Thunderbolt's first season are retained for this series. While this second season of Thunderbolt is still an engaging treat with its mecha action and continuing focus on Io and Daryl, it is down a peg somewhat thanks to the new storyline with the South Seas Alliance creating an open ending.
