It is the year 2307 AD. As fossil fuels became exhausted, humanity found a new energy source to change their situation: A large-scale solar power system with three enormous orbiting elevators. However, only a few large countries and their allies reaped the benefits. Three superpowers had ownership of the three orbiting elevators: The Union, based in the United States Of America, The People's Reform League, made up of China, Russia, and India, and Europe's AEU. The superpowers continue playing a large zero-sum game for their own dignity and respective prosperity. Even though it is the 24th century, humanity has yet to become one. In this world where war has no end, a private militia appears advocating the eradication of war through force. And so the armed intervention by the Gundams against all acts of war begins.

With exception to Turn A Gundam, I haven't been a big fan of the alternate continuity titles within the Gundam franchise that I've seen with my splurging into the franchise over the past couple years. I guess I can consider this first season to Gundam 00 to be a second alternate continuity title to wow me. Actually taking place within the Anno Domini timeline this time around, 00 depicts a future where nations are in hostile tensions with one another over resources and Celestial Being stepping in to try settling conflicts within these nations. The anime does quite a bit of fleshing out focusing on a number of characters within the several factions seen within Gundam 00 from Celestial Being to the three "power blocs". The Anno Domini timeline used for the series leads to some interesting exploration on touchy real-life subjects that get addressed such as religious fanaticism, the end of oil exports, political tensions and terrorism.

The first half of the series focuses on Celestial Being tackling different missions in one to three episode arcs with the occasional focus on background with the different Gundam pilots. The second half to the series picks up in intensity when the military of the different power blocs unite in their efforts against the Gundams, new enemies emerge as threats and the power blocs obtain technology on par with the Gundams of Celestial Being to raise the difficulty for the group. This leads to some engaging developments as shocking plot twists take place, some major characters actually get killed off and the Gundams actually get plenty of challenge in their fights compared to the first half of the series.

This isn't to say everything within Gundam 00's first season is perfect. The show does have some characters suffering from limited depth and shallowness, especially a case of one major foe being your garden variety megalomaniac. Like many titles in the Gundam franchise, Gundam 00 also comes with its fair share of melodrama that usually gets too over-the-top in a number of the show's serious moments. In addition with this only being the first half to the Gundam 00 continuity, this first season is left intentionally open-ended for the show's second season.

Visually, Gundam 00 sports a slick presentation with vivid colors and plenty of detail in the designs of scenery, mecha and characters. Battle scenes are nicely animated with a good amount of fluid movement in many instances and excellent choreography, making fights within Gundam 00 a treat for action anime fans.

While not up to par in quality with Turn A Gundam, this first season of Gundam 00 was still a worthwhile watch for me with its exploration on real-life issues connected to the Gundam fights, a slick visual presentation and an engaging second half with enough plot twists and difficulty for the Gundam pilots to make the series an engaging watch to its first season finale. This has me tempted to check out the second season to Gundam 00 at some point.

Unevaluated Big Fire [series:1672#2441]
another Gundam? I have tried to watch this twice already...the mecha looks cool, but i can't get into the story...i mean how many times do we need special robots to come down and beat up on inferior robots? shows you how much i watched...anywho...with the advent of another mecha show not to be named here...i am going to try to plow through this and see if this is going to be a keeper or not...so far the only positive i have is that the gundams look beautifully drawn...

Gundam Fans Rejoice!!

This is a new series that apparently has no relation to Gundam Seed or Seed Destiny.

Too bad that it is not as 'cool' as Seed or Seed Destiny. I tried to watch a few episodes but (like Big-Fire) I just could not get into this series. It's possible that I might be 'gundammed-out' after having seen OH SO many variants of the basic gundam mecha story.
