A hidden military organization named Mithril mobilizes three crack troops (Sousuke, Kurz, & Mao) to secretly protect a young Japanese girl, Chidori Kaname, from being kidnapped. Sousuke Sagara is assigned to be her personal bodyguard and must go undercover as a fellow high school student while not letting her know she's in danger or that he's protecting her. Unfortunately, Sousuke has little experience in understanding life as a normal high school student thus he considers just about any little action or thing around him to be a threat on Kaname.

School Rumble meets Koukaku Kidoutai S.A.C. 2nd GIG - and the combination doesn't work.

OP and ED song are okay but nothing special; character design isn't that great either, too much SD for my taste. Animation suffers from unrealistic walking and the noticeable use of stills; this being an action series with cool fighting scenes makes these deficits even more painful.

Goofy, embarrassing and unrealistic to the extreme: Sagara Sousuke is a trained pro in terms of weaponry use but a complete blockhead in terms of social contacts, making him the worst possible choice for his task in this story - who at Mithril tried to save money at the wrong place? And sadly Chidori isn't much better. Slapstick and incompetence of bigmouth characters, this bugs me to no end. Add the point that the bad guys are snot-nosed enough to tell their whole secret master plan in full detail to the audience; Gauron is the most one-dimensional villain I've ever seen.

For quite a while this series tries to be funny and serious at the same time, none of which works too well. Starting with the A21 arc the series gets better - basically because of Tessa, the strongest Character of this show (despite her cute weaknesses) who gets more airtime now and establishes order in her environment. The Helmajistan arc could have been good but suffers from excessive butchering at its end. No sooner than when the Whispered finally start to act the Story begins to be interesting - and the final arc is a success when Tessa shows surprising tactical skills, appointing Chidori for the one task only this girl can do (and thus justifying the position of both) while Sagara remains the dim-witted hatched man. So the narration style of the final arc led to Episode Story earning the highest rating for this show.

Could have been much better with more Helmajistan arc stuff and less silliness, with both leads being a total loss for me; Tessa alone was worth watching this series but didn't suffice to earn it a "Rent" rating. I can only hope the sequel to be better and to close some of the numerous plot holes (almost nothing about the Whispered is actually explained, causing a downgrade for Series Story; reading Wikipedia does help but is full of huge spoilers).

Full Metal Panic is an anime series that delivers a fresh twist on the high school romantic comedy genre: the male protagonist being a boy raised in the military for most of his life. With this kind of character in the form of Sousuke Sagara, he is prone to causing destruction or misassumptions about regarding anything harmless as a threat due to his inexperience of civilian life. Combine this with attractive tsundere gal, Kaname Chidori, and you have a great mix of comical character chemistry where Kaname has to reprimand or beat Sousuke senseless for mistaking something as a threat. Comedy is clearly FMP's highlight thanks to the chemistry between these two and Sousuke's lack of understanding on civilian life.

But in terms of being an action title as well, FMP is a mixed bag. On the positive end, the first major conflict in the series is set up solidly where Kaname needs to be rescued and eventually learns of Sousuke's true intentions. Artwork for the series was very good making use of bright colored scenery, detailed character designs, and slick CG mecha designs. Action scenes were quite fluid and smooth, especially with mecha battles as the CG mecha details held up very well in battle scenes.

On the other hand, plot details that could have been addressed were overlooked in this series. We get no details on relevant storylines such as what the Whispered are, how the main military cast (including Sousuke) joined Mithril, and how did Mithril obtain such advanced technology. In addition, some of the characters seen in this series lacked any depth in personality, such as the main villian. Being the archetypical mad terrorist, the main villian has nothing explained about him thus making him a bit stale as a foe.

As a comedy, FMP has a fresh premise in the form of Sousuke's lack of common sense on civilian life which fans of such a genre will revel in. But as an action title, plotting issues will have some folks scratching their heads over what they are seeing beyond the show's humor.

So back to Full Metal Panic #1...after re-watching two espisodes so far, i am still cracking up...i remember laughing alot when i watched it the first time so i guess this no suprise. In this anime...you get the best of both worlds...you get a school environment...and you get a military esque environment with mecha...Works for me!!! This is one of my favorite anime, and i am enjoying it just as much this time around...

A pretty good anime with good comedy and action. And great character design, Especially with the character Sosuke sagara, he could be a total idiot when it come to becoming a normal 17 year old high school boy,as he has no commom sense, (he solve all his pronlems using Military methods) but when it come to combat with a AS (ARM SLAVE) or with a gun his is the best of the best.

overall highly recommend

This anime is very well balanced with comedy and action. Mornally in these animes the hero meet the girl and after a while they starts to like each other and eventually falls in love. but since sousuke is the hero there is a bit of a problem and these is where most of the comedy comes from. the action is not bad too as they combine mecha with technology that is like magic but sadly there wasn't much of this.

but overall this a very good anime and highly reccomended

These episodes were filled with action laughter and a little romance thrown in. Sousuke has been a soldier since very young and doesn't have a lot of knowledge about the female or what they think. All he knows is protecting Chidori under orders and fighting battles. His personality is a quiet and not too talkative male and when he does things they are to be perfect. There is one episode that I found special and that is when sousuke is suppose to go on a date with a girl to show him off to her friends. She asks for a kiss and he does. Chidori sees green of course when this happens and asks him does he always kiss anyone and he says yes he has kissed guys but some didn't make it. She realizes it is artificial insemination he is talking about and I thought that one part was very refreshing. I think Full Metal Panic is a great anime and I have all seven episodes. Don't miss seeing this one.

I loved this series! The mecha scenes are okay but the animation is downright awesome! Kaname and Sousuke instantly joined my list of favorite anime couples. They dont send me into sugar shock(Tamahome? Miaka? Ack!)but its quite obvious that they have a thing for each other. And theyre always hilarious! As a fangirl, Ive got quite a lot of annoying anime heroines on my blacklist and Kaname is definitely not one of them. She kicks butt, literally and figuratively! And Sousuke—well hes not like any protagonist Ive ever seen. Hes cool—but hes also ridiculously clueless. Hes hot tootoo bad he only had one shirtless scene *drools* Heeheehee. The supporting cast gives us a whopper of comic relief, mecha mayhem or both. Dysfunctional duo Kurz and Melissa quickly found soft spots in my heart. Tessa annoyed me thoughbut thats just me.
Full Metal Panic manages to stay between the shonen and shoujo genre, shifting constantly from high school comedy to military action. I think this shift is well done, considering that these two genres seem so far apart. The humor actually made me laugh. yeah, yeah, I know thats what its supposed to do but Ive seen too many anime with the same slapstick stuff that gets old after the 6th episode. Combining the two genres seems to have created a new and refreshing concept that, I repeat, actually made me laugh.
As for the mecha and military action, its nothing I havent seen before but Ive seen enough to know that its pretty much quality.
A lot of people complained about the English dub but I really liked it. The voices were great matches with the characters, especially Sousukes. The pronunciations were off, though
My only complaint was that I wasnt satisfied with my fave couples romantic status. K+S! Come on Gatoh! Ah well. Theres still the second season.
Bottom line: Get this series. Youre in for a real treat.
P.S. Heero Yuy??? Puh-lease. I thought Sousuke was much nicer

Yes this is a BUY! I don't like the Synopsis as it contains way too many spoilers but as no one was fixed it before I'll just leave it.
This is a Great Series! Tons of Comedy, Drama, Excitement, Boredom, Tech Details, and a hint of Fan Service.
What a balance! I was avoiding this just because I loved Macross and I didn't want to watch any other Mecha based Anime (Well except for Gundam Seed). Boy did I almost shoot myself in the foot. This is an incredibly well done anime. Souske is sooooo clueless and Chidori is so pissed off I even see a more realistic Love Hina clone. This Anime is great.
Also the Sequel Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu is a good follow up, but Fumoffu is pure Comedy. It's a riot to watch but I did miss the interaction of the other cast..(Well except for the Tessa Episode).
What's the only thing I didn't like about it? I didn't like Chidori's look. Compared to the Manga, this Chidori looks like she was done by an Amateur. But then, if they didn't change her, the Manga girl does look a little generic.
FMP1 is all the series episodes from the Manga. FMP2 might look like a completely different show but it really was the comedy episodes of the Manga that they took out. If you want the total experience ... watch 1 episode from each and alternate. Then you will have a more complete feeling about FMP.
BTW : As of Sept 2004 there was an Annoucement that there will be a FMP3. Waahooo!

While not my favorite, this is pretty good. Souske is a member of a secret military orginization, and has been all his life. Thats all well and good until he gets an assignment guarding high school hottie Kaname, and he is forced to blend in with kids his own age (this guy actually thinks that condoms are used to hold water when your traveling through the desert, and that kissing and cpr are the same thing).
I liked the humor in this, and the action was great until they get into the mech battles (I hate mechs with a passion). This is a good anime if for nothing more than humor alone (after kicking the crap out of a bad guy, Souske says something like "I'm no ordinary high schooler, I'm on clean up duty!"

Shhh I'm back. I had to review on this one because I love it so much. There arn't that many anime's coming out today that I just can't wait for the next one to come out this is one (Noir currently being the other.) This is a show that spoofs gundam wing a bit only it really dose have a better story line. the art, animation and surround sound effects make this an increadible show. It also has a story line that isn't to far from today although the soviates are still around (Hey they make great bad guys) some of what is going on in the world is scarily similar to the show. The group is fun to watch and this show also features some of my favorite english VA's. Very well done I love watching each episode over and over agian.

First of all: I don't like meccha. And I still don't like it. But that didn't stop me from watching the entire serie. Funny, come to think of it, because there's lots of meccha in this story. Lucky there's lots of other stuff too.
There's a secret international organisation out there, called Mithril. And it's really secret because noone knows about it. Somehow, they manage to get enough cash to design a really sophisticated submarine and robot, based on technology that somehow is hidden in young girls minds. And this is where the story begins. Intel reports that terrorists have discovered one of these girls (Kaname Chidori) and plan to kidnap them. So they send a small team to protect her secretly. Why they decide to use Sagara as undercover is a mistery to me. Sure he's a specialist in weapons and tactics, but then ... that's exactly everything he knows! And thus, an amusing story develops: Sagara having his toy weapons confiscated (whoops, they're NOT toys). Sagara following Chidori all over town and even trying to get enlisted to the girl's softball team (it's just a coincidence), ...
The characters are well developed, and mostly very believable. Finally we have a female lead that doesn't rely on her hero all the time and that manages quite well to pull her own string. Chidori is not the prettiest, sweetest or cutest female character, and is therefore my nr 1 female hero. Why she falls for Sagara is a mistery though.
Sagara and Tessa are something else: 16 year olds being warspecialist or submarine captains? But then, it's just a story, right? And Tessa is one of the 'whispered', so that explains. (?) Also: Sagara just doesn't seem to learn even one bit.
The animation is quite good, music is a bit neglected, but the opening and ending themes are nice. The story is nice, although I find the meccha's very unbelievable but I have that problem with all the meccha series. Why in the world someone would build that is a mistery to me.
The story in general is quite good, although some episodes are clearly added for some reason. The game between two meccha teams with Kazama's father for example is completely out of place.
I hesitate between buy and rent. Full metal panic is not that good to run to the stores at once, but it's definitely worth running to your nearest videostore.
Best character: Kaname Chidori, but Kurtz Weber is a good second. (Why are most European characters always German in anime?)
Best moment: Sagara and Chidori making a trip, which ends with ends with them both falling out of an airplane to be picked up by a submarine. Chidori sure has to put up a lot with Sagara around.

Full Metal Panic is not a bad mecha title, but it doesn't flow very well. The first story regarding the kidnapping of Chidori is well done. The story is set up well, the characters are introduced in a good manner, there is plenty of humor to start and action to follow. So the first seven episodes are great. With episode eight, we have a "filler" episode which is funny, but it really has no connection to everything that happened in the first seven episodes. Despite all of the stuff she'd seen, Chidori acts like nothing's happened. A simple explaination from her to Sousuke saying that she has to live normally or the terrorist win would have fixed this.

The second story regarding the A-21 terrorist and the giant mecha known as Behemoth is just dropped in our lap. On its own, the story is good, but it was poorly set up. Behemoth and A-21 should have been mentioned early on as something Mithril was searching for. When this story is started, this whole A-21/Behemoth issue seems to have been a high-priority for Mithril, so important that it wasn't mentioned until now.

With the third story, we get Sousuke on a mission with another Mithril group returning to his homeland. Without Chidori there, the story is weakened. But what really kills it is that we know nothing of Sousuke's past prior to this story. So during the course of the story we get flashbacks to his past, but it is too late to have any impact on the viewer. And because his new team is so hateful to Sousuke, the viewers are more likely not to care if they live or die in the upcoming battle.

A similar tale is told with the final tale. Out of the blue, the American navy is interested in the Dana and "Toy Box" (their name for the giant rumored Mithril sub). That should have been there from the begining. The elements that allow the villian to score points should have been mentioned more forcefully earlier as well and those elements should have been shown in action earlier too. Without this, again the impact is weakened and seems to just be pulled out of the air.

The main villian is so cliched that it is not even funny. Other than he's an opportunist and insane, we know NOTHING about him. But that's not all we don't know anything about. What exactly are the "Whispered"? Where did they gain this knowledge? How was Mithril formed? How was the Dana designed and built? How does a 16-year old girl become captain of a sub that seems to be the size of an aircraft carrier? How did Sousuke, Kurz, Mao, and others join Mithril? Why is the Soviet Union still around in the modern age? There's just a ton of stuff which is ignored in this series.

That said, why do I own this title? Well aside from the fact that Full Metal Panic is so funny and worth owning, I just love Sousuke and Chidori. The chemestry between the two seiyuu really help bring the characters to life. Kurz and Mao's seiyuu do a great job as well. The art and animation are great. For its time, FMP's CGI usage is outstanding. The merging of CGI and CG animation works well. And individually, the various stories are not bad. They just weren't connected well and it made the series not know if it was romantic-comedy, action, mecha, sci-fi, etc.

Bottom line: this series is like a roller coaster ride with lots of ups and downs, lots of thrills and spills, but in the end leaves you wondering if standing in line for hours just to ride this thing could have been better spent. Despite this, one finds oneself going back to stand in line again and again. As such, I'll give it a marginal "Buy." Had the story flowed better, it would have been near perfect.

You can relate to me if you think
Rurouni Kenshin OVA (excellent in every way. The best you've seen)
Cowboy Bebop (excellent. The story line was nicely done)
Naruto (i'm up to ep46 and i cant wait for the next ep to come out!!!!!)
Kiki's Delivery Service (a very "light hearted" story. i enjoyed it)
hack SIGN (a waste of time)

The ani was fantastic but the character design was about the same as x tv.
I dont know about Full Metal Panic. it just didn't have a strong story line and you couldn't relate to the main character. it reminded me of those big budget american movies with huge explosions but no meaning to it. Full Metal Panic was just another ani to me. I was left with a "oh, is that it?", instead of a "WOW - like Kenshin OVA.

this is a MUST watch anime that screams, "love meeeee!" i agree that sagara does represent heero yuy only with a personality that easily gives away who they really are...i mean, on his first day he says, "sargent sagara reporting" how obvious is that? and how many times is it going to be a coincidence to follow chidori around? V_V
well, the storyline is something fresh (to me at least) and the art is just wonderful, especially with the mechas. the time period is actually something related to our time for a sci-fi type anime and adds great comedy that lasts me for a while. "panty theif" **snort**

I was half dragged into watching this series, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. Much as the title suggests, the series is mech based. It revolves around a special force called special "Mithril", and an elite specialist soldier named Sagara. They're assigned to watch over a schoolgirl named Chidori.
The mechs used in the show are far from the standard fare. They're unique enough and the Mithril force is unique enough that it manages to feel fresh. Sagara is a dead clone of Heero Yui, but that's not a bad thing. Sagara is described as the most "professional of the professional", an elite soldier through and through. Taking this pure military mind and placing him into a urban highschool situation is actually quite funny. There's some hilarious moments that alone make the series worth watching.
Chidori bugs me a bit, but she serves her purpose in the series. I just find her about impossible to like early in the show. I'm quite sure this is purposely done though, and as the series goes on she becomes much more likable.
The action sequences is where the show really shines. Elite forces, big mechs, guns, explosions, tanks... lots of fun for all. It's very well animated and very well timed. Being from GONZO, I would certainly expect this. They've done every bit as good as they did with the Vandread series.
If you like the title, you'll probably like the anime. It's really as simple as that. A Heero like main character, plenty of fan service, GONZO's wonderful artists, and a storyline that makes you want to watch just one more episode every single time. It's a refreshingly well put together show.

Now, I just bought this DVD today, and I have to say...
I LOVE IT!!! I'd been reading the Manga in Newtype monthly ever since the first edition came out.
I find this series very witty and funny, but also serious in some aspects, the growing bond between Kaname and Souske is a slow and akward process, but that also makes it interesting.
I love the character designs...they are really good. I like the mecha artwork too...in the fourth episode, the part where they focus on the plane and move through the base with the plane as the center point of the scene is awesome.
I also enjoy the music...the beginning and ending songs are great, but I admit that I like the ending song better.
The thing that I have to like most about the DVD is that they stop the first DVD right at a crucial point...it makes it impossible to NOT want to buy the second DVD of the series, you just have to know what happened!!!
I know that I will be buying the entire series already. If you havent seen Full Metal Panic, rent it, buy it, watch it with a bud! Just see it! I guarantee you'll like it.

This is an excellent series, the only thing that I didn't like about the series is that about 45% actually had anything to do with the opening story, it always side-tracked into Sagaras past. If you like comedy, lots of mechs, and a little romance you'll love this title. The best thing is if you like this series the sequal is in production so it shouldn't be too long to see what else happens.

Overall, a good anime series with a bit of everything (Romance, action, comedy). The art work was really well done with awsome graphics. There are awsome scenes where the giant robots are fighting and the back-ground music for these fight scenes is really good.
However, the story needs to be a bit more focused. There is no flow between every episode. Minor characters were kinda ignored towards the end of the series.

After watching tremendous anime and movies, I personaly think Full Metal Panic is not so good.
Yes, the art and anime are nice. The story is funny sometimes. And the music is nice. What's wrong about this series is the story. It's not creative. I've watched many similar animes before. On the other hand the central idea is not focused enough. Moreover, for the purpose of producing more drama, the plot is unconvincing and unreasonable. I'm tired of these type of anime that there is always one enemy would not die until the end.
Nevertheless, there are tremendous amount of outstanding mechanic creation in this anime and great robot fights. If that's all u ask for, it's worth buying.

Big robots fighting... Sounds good to me! Art looks smooth and colorful, especially I liked robots' huge, metallic look. Other words art was fine. Animation is very fluent. In the matter a fact in full screen mode old computer started slow down so much it affected frames per second. With other animes it hasn't occured yet. I think that speaks enough about quality of art & animation. Music/sounds were good maybe really good.
Minor characters could be little more surprising. Or maybe that minus would belong to story side but sometimes you could guess what would some minor characters do. But major characters were made better and I really enjoyed watching them to grow in their places.
Also minus goes to the "never dying big boss" but you could live with it.
I liked story was good. It mainly told about Mithril's fight against terrorist, altough Sagara's life change from calculating warmachine to more like "normal" life played enjoying role. It was, specially in the beginning, almost like comedy sometimes.
Only thing that I can say bad is those characters. Another thing could be that there were no big "red line" if you don't count characters grow. It didn't bother me though. Action packed in humour and spiced up with little love, romance and decissions. Some like it hot. On my opinion this is hot! =)
