Seina Yamada is an unlucky teen boy. In fact his luck is so bad that he can't score a break if he tried. While on his way to his friend's house (taking a shortcut which takes him past his senpai Tenchi Masaki's home), his bad luck causes his bike to break. As he comes to rest at the Masaki lake, something crashes into the lake and knocks him out. When he comes to, a beautiful blonde lady is over him, relieved he hasn't been harmed. Assuming Seina has been training with Tenchi, she gives him a pamphlet to join Galaxy Police and tells him her name is Amane Kaunaq. Seina's family thinks the pamplet is some sort of prize entry and force Seina to put his thumb print on it.

Thus Seina is introduced into a strange new universe that makes up the realm of Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki. Pirates are drawn to his presence like flies, and gives the powerful Seto Kamiki (Seto-sama) of Jurai a reason to be very interested in him. Seina is accepted into the Galaxy Police Academy and is assigned to Amane, who made a mistake in giving him a pamphlet, and Kiriko Masaki, a woman who looked after the unlucky Seina on Earth and who is distantly related to Tenchi. Also helping Seina in his new pirate-hunting task force are Ryoko Balouta, a former pirate captain, and Neiju Na Malmas, a 2000-year old former priestest. And further assisting Seina is the robot NB, who becomes very perverted after Amane attempts to upgrade him, and Fuku, a younger sibling of Ryo-ohki created by Washu.

Will Seina survive the countless pirate attacks? Will he survive various attractive women vying for his attention? Will his luck ever turn good? What secrets about Tenchi and Jurai will be revealed?

[26 TV episodes, the canon spinoff-sequel to the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki (OAV 3). The series was aired before TM!R OAV 3 and can be seen prior to OAV 3 without spoiling that series. In fact, watching GXP first will get the viewers familar to characters like Seto-sama and Airi-san who have roles in OAV 3.]

The canon GXP novels confirm that "Dual!" is set billions of years ago and why some of the characters are reincarnated in OVA 5. The "Paradise Wars" novels are included in the canon, which are also referenced in Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki OVA 5.

Continuity-wise, Tenchi Muyo GXP takes place two years after the events of the third Tenchi Muyo OVA series with this TV anime focused on the ridiculously unlucky Seina, who gets enrolled for training at the Galaxy Police and has several alien girls taking varying degrees of romantic interest in him. GXP is more comedy and fan service driven compared to other OVA continuity titles, which does lead it to lack a good amount of the charm that the original OVAs had. The OVAs explore elements of the cast, made effective use of their comedic bits, knew when to get serious and made restrained use of its fan service and sexual humor. For GXP though, the series takes on a bit of a manic comedy approach in its focus on the antics of Seina and his harem, with a good amount of fan service pumped out that greatly surpasses what the OVAs had. Character depth is limited, and efforts to try giving depth to the harem fall mostly flat due to any issues faced by the cast either being resolved within an episode or the mentioned exploration doesn't really lead to anything relevant.

GXP's director, Shinichi Watanabe, is notable for the manic approach he offers with his popular works Heppoko Jiken Animation Excel Saga and Nerima Daikon Brothers. It doesn't work too well here because the manic style clashes with the restrained humor and focus on plot and characters that Tenchi creator Masaki Kajishima normally puts into his work. Some of the show's efforts at comedy like Seiryo being the show's comedic relief/ punching bag work well, while others border on obnoxious and aren't so funny such as the robot NB's neverending efforts to attempt recording women undressing. Some of Kajishima's touches still shine through at points as GXP does explore more about the Galaxy Police and the Jurai Royal Family that weren't addressed in earlier novels, doujinshi and installments of the Tenchi franchise at that point. Plus, there is a later episode where Seina meets up with Tenchi and the girls. But getting these treats comes with having to struggle through the many touches that Watanabe applied to this series, for better or for worst.

Overall, GXP is perhaps one of the weaker offerings of the Tenchi franchise I've seen. Shinichi Watanabe's direction is a bad match for the type of writing that Masaki Kajishima normally applies for his works and while his touches occasionally pop up in GXP, there is still too much of Watanabe's influence on the series for this to be anything more than a subpar work.

First, I'd like to start by saying that I'm shocked that I haven't reviewed this series from the TM franchise. The last review was on 2004 so I should apologize for not noticing this earlier...years earlier. Now onto my review. GXP is a spin-off of the original TMRO series. It starts at the end of the latest TM series (if you have seen the third OVA). It's protagonist is an unlucky teenager, Seina Yamada. When I say unlucky, that word 'unlucky' doesn't even do it any justice. It's bad luck times infinity. He's a poster child for Murphy's Law which states that anything that can go wrong, will. He's also a friend of Tenchi so there's a little history there.

Review from unknown reviewer who created a 2nd GXP page...

This is not classic Tenchi Muyo but is entertaining in it's own right. It concerns the adventures of Siennia who is just about the most accident prone character ever and his quest to become a member of the Galaxy Police. Most of the regular T.M. characters make cameo apperances. This series is 26 episodes long and has a lot of very funny characters. My favorite has to be the perverterd robot. This is a definite series for any Tehchi Muyo fanperson to checkout.

I have to change my review, in light of a few things that I have just learned. In my original review, I was complaining that this series was just too ecchi, while Astro-boy makes the comment that the Japanese release is far more ecchi than the American R1 release.well, guess what I was watching? And I have just seen the R1 release . Growl!! I am not happy.
From a purely technical point of view, the Fan-sub release of GXP and FUNimation American R1 GXP release might best be considered two very different stories. The Japanese release is very ecchi, full of a lot of sexual innuendo with lots of fan service, but it is a complete story. In the FUNimation release, they took liberties with the footage and story line that I do not like. Their voice over script has very little to do with the original Japanese script, as they attempted to sanitize the content in an attempt to reach a PG13+ rating, (sorry, I dont think that they made it, this series is still very ecchi). And the subtitles are verbatim what is spoken in the script, not a translation from the Japanese.
While my objections about the original Japanese series still holds, I do respect the directors artistic integrity and creative content. I take a strong measure of offense as to how FUNimation has decided to take the anime footage and basically, rewrite a new story line around it. To me this is a classic case of someone selectively censoring something based solely on the perceived need to dumb a product down to the lowest PG rating, to gain the greatest market share.
While I might only give a pinky or a thumb up for the fan-sub original, I feel strongly compelled to offer a strong two thumbs down for the FUNimation R1 release. I have think that I have some strong measure of experience with anime, and while I might not always enjoy what see, I have never encountered such an attempt to censor a creative artistic import to maximize profit.
Sorry, I think that I might be in a grouchy mood! But whatever?

When you combine the talents of Kajishima Masaki and Watanabe Shinichi, anything can happen. What does happen is a story set in the Tenchi Muyo OAV continuity (canon) which is filled with interesting characters, an interesting world, an interesting story, some parody, and a ton of fanservice! In some ways, GXP is a parody of the original Tenchi Muyo. Seina is surrounded by a bunch of babes but this time, ALL of them are fighting for his attention. And to make it worse, the age difference is much more severe here.

As to the story, we get a good one as one might expect from Kajishima-sensei. I really liked the exploration of the pirate problem facing this world and how Jurai and the Galaxy Police had to deal with it. The supporting cast is very strong with characters like Ayeka's and Sasami's grandmother Seto-sama (who is determined to resolve this pirate issue one way or another), Yosho's wife (and Tenchi's grandmother) Airi-san, who is in charge of Galaxy Academy, Mihoshi's mother Mitoto (who has a knack for being able to cross the galaxy without the benifit of a spaceship), and more. The cast of Tenchi Muyo show up in full for episode 17 which is a real treat, especially since this takes place a year after Tenchi Muyo! OAV 3. Washu makes a few additional cameos as does Ryo-Ohki. In the final episode, we see most of the Tenchi gang again in a pan shot.

A weakness of the series is that the fanservice and ecchi content have been raised pretty high. It's not surprising though and the R2 DVD has even more nudity of the female characters! Got to love digital technology. Watanabe's sense of humor also comes into play several times, and there are times when it seems to clash with Kajishima's story. The character of NB (Watanabe's insertion of himself into the story) is so annoying. While Nabeshin may have worked in "Excel Saga", NB is nothing more than a serious distraction. No wonder NB is almost non-exsistant in Kajishima-sensei's GXP novel or in episode 17, which K-sensei directed. Nabeshin's direction has put off some fans as well. Otherwise, I didn't have any real problems with the series.

Bottom line: Fans of the original OAV series will want to have this one since there's a lot of cool, new stuff learned about this universe Kajishima has created. Fans of harem anime titles or "Excel Saga" should feel right at home too. If this wasn't Kajishima's title in the TM!R continuity, I would have only given it a Rent though.

This series is placed one year later after the 3rd OVA Series ended. However, this time, the story revolves around a guy named Seina Yamada, who is Tenchi's cousin. Don't worry though, Tenchi and company do make a cameo apperence in Episode 17.
The the story is basically another clone of itself, at least this time it is in the same Tenchiverse. I would recondmend checking it out first before buying it; however if you are a true Tenchi-fanatic, then you better get this for your collection.
