The Pros: Tenchi Muyo in Love is the first of a trilogy of Tenchi movies made during the second half of the 1990s. With this particular one based on the Tenchi Universe storyline, it goes into more detail about Tenchi's mother, Achika, with how she met Tenchi's father, Nobayuki, in high school and what led to her early death following Tenchi's birth. The movie does a good job of balancing out the elements of adventure, comedy, and drama as the movie explores both the quest of Tenchi and the girls to halt Kain's plans and seeing the natural development of Achika and Nobayuki's feelings for each other. With this type of mood, the sexual humor which the Tenchi shows were known for got toned down for this movie. This was a good move as this prevented the mood of the movie from being hampered by any unnecessary humor. The animation for the movie flowed at a decent rate though the artwork was on par with what could be found in any of the Tenchi shows. The music, on the otherhand, had a good variety of piano tracks that flow well with both the natural scenes of Nobayuki and Achika as well as intense ones where Kain finally makes his presence to go after Achika. Kudos also go to legendary anime seiyuu Megumi Hayashibari for her natural portrayal as Achika.

Cons: The villian of Kain is a double-edged sword for this movie. While it is his presence which gives reason for the movie to explore the past of Tenchi's parents, Kain himself has no real depth and no personal connection related to the Masaki family thus it seemed he was thrown in as an excuse to have this movie. There could have been a better villian made for this movie and in terms of the villian department, Tenchi Forever does a better job of it with Haruna.

Facts on the Movie:

-Music for this movie was composed by composer Christopher Franke, a man well known for his musical work for the sci-fi TV series, Babylon 5.

I found the title "Tenchi Muyo in Love" to be misleading, since this is primarily an action-comedy film, not a romantic one. Perhaps "Tenchi's *Father* in love" would have been more appropriate. I'm not that great a fan of anime movies--I tend to prefer half-hour portions--which may have dragged my rating down a notch. I became anxious when I read that this movie is based on the Tenchi Universe series, which didn't particularly impress me. Fortunately, I found this movie to be *much* better than the Universe episodes (though still not quite as good as the OAVs). The plot moved along smoothly, the developments made sense, and it kept me interested in how things would work out--I wouldn't have noticed these things if they were not lacking from all too many movies. The bantering and bickering between the charachters was far more amusing than I remember them being during Tenchi Universe. Near the end I started thinking that the climactic scene wasn't living up to the same standard as the rest of the movie, because it seemed that Kain was being defeated too easily--but in fact he wasn't down for the count and the film still had quite a ways to go. Though I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, all in all it was a well balanced, entertaining film.

My favorite line: "There is only one thing in the entire universe that stands between you and oblivion: the most brilliant mind in the galaxy--you're lookin' at her!"--Washu

The first Tenchi movie takes place in the Tenchi Universe continuity. Like the TV series, Tenchi Muyou! In Love is full of humor, fun, and an interesting story.

The Jurai hating entity known as Kain escapes from Galaxy Police imprisonment and heads to Earth of 1970 to destroy Tenchi's mother and thus the Jurai. Washu detects this and manages to protect Tenchi and the girls from the effects in time and send them back to 1970 to fix things. Once there, we see how Tenchi's mother and father met and fell in love in addition to what caused Tenchi's mother's early death.

Ayeka and Ryoko provide the bulk of the laughs as is expected. All of the characters are well done and show some depth not often seen in the TV series. There's no real nudity in this one which is a shock for a Tenchi title! There is a scene where Tenchi's mother changes into a Jurai battle garb in typical "magic girl" fashion, but it's not done where you see much of anything.

Bottom line: Great humor, great fun, and a well done story make this a must-have for Tenchi fans.

In this movie, we are treated to a glimpse of the past, of how tenchi's mother and father met. The villian Kain escaped the galaxy police hq and tried to kill off the tenchi bloodline by traveling back to the past. Tenchi must do everything in his power to prevent that from happening. This movie gives you more detailed background information that was so sorely lacked in the series. It would have helped if you have seen Tenchi in some form before watching this movie, but you won't be lost if you didn't. This is the best of the tenchi movies and definitely one of the best anime movies in my opinion.

Now I am not a big fan of Tenchi. I admit the first OVA had some charm, but afterwards everything went down hill. However, I am fond of the movies especially this one. It was seeing this title on the Sci-Fi Channel that got me hooked on anime. The animation is very nice especially for a movie based upon a series. I like the plot, because it manages to perfectly mesh humor, action, and drama and it manages to have enough room for all the characters. I am also fond of Kain, the villain. By the way this is the movie of Tenchi Universe and not the original series.

TENCHI has always been one of the more vivid and entertaining titles that warranted its immense popularity, no less and I think TENCHI MUYO IN LOVE is the best of everything about Tenchi and his gang.
This is a movie that is as touching as it is humorous and gentle as it is graphic. I adore this movie on many levels because it gives such a sense of humanity to many of the TENCHI cast that is often neglected in the usual series. People who love TENCHI will most likely love this movie since it makes their favorite characters seem all the more real and lovable without completely removing them from their standard element. Ill also go so far as to say that you dont even need to know all that much about TENCHI to like his first movie and it might even be you introduction into the always interesting world of TENCHI MUYO (Thats what it was for me ~_^ )
Watch it when you get the chance.

To me, this is the pinnacle of all things Tenchi. It has drama, sweep, action, comedy, memorable characters, and beautiful artwork. Achika (voiced in Japanese by the one and only Hayashibara Megumi) is a wonderful character, and our knowledge of her eventual fate gives the story an added poignancy. It's also nice to see Nobiyuki get to take center stage for a change. (He was pretty cute and shy when he was young, too—who would have guessed?) The only thing I could wish for was a bit more of Tenchi's grandfather, who is one of my favorite characters; but that's a very small quibble. Otherwise, this movie is just about perfect, by far the best of the three Tenchi movies in my opinion.

This movie had it all for an anime. It was very touching, it had a lot of action, a lot of comedy and wit and an intriguing storyline.
The animation was amazing and the musical score was just plain WOW. Capturing the right mood at the right moment. The characters that we have all loved or maybe hated are there. As well as Tenchi's mom Achika and a better Nobiyuki (finally). The story is great, captivating and very touching (especially the end). You can't help but be drawn into it.
This would be a great watch for ALL Tenchi fans. Although it might seem confusing to those who had never seen the series before, it will catch their attention quick. Overall a must see.

First off, Tenchi Muyo rocks. This movie was really good. It takes place in the Tenchi Universe continuity, as far as I can tell, with better animation and a bigger budgit.
Suitably "big screen" for a movie, it actually feels cinimatic, and not just like several episodes strung togeather. The story, while a bit hokey, suffices, and provides some truely emotional moments between Tenchi and his mother. It was strange to see Tenchi's dad not being a filthy old man, but it was nice to see the good side of him, too.
As always, the music for Tenchi was great, and the previously mentioned animation was awesome. Tenchi has some of my favorite character designs, so that goes without saying.
To sum up,any Tenchi fan MUST own this, and any anime fan probably should, too. However, if you are unfamiliar with the characters, I suggest you watch at least some of the Tenchi Universe TV show first, to familiarize yourself with the large cast. Trust me, this will be far more enjoyable if you have knowledge of the characters. Still, it's a fun movie even for Tenchi newbies, and worth owning.

I was strolling through the aisles once again of the local Video Update, scanning for an anime to rent for the hell of it. As I moved throught the racks, I came upon Tenchi in Love. I immediately soiled my pants with joy and ran to the counter to check it out.
This is one hell of a movie. I doubt that I have seen a better anime "movie" ever, period. The story is great with the Back to the Future vibe to it. The artwork is excellent. The characters are still as lovable as before. The music is pretty good as usual.
I had my little brother (not much of a Tenchi fan) watch it, and he loved it. I have shown it to numerous people who have on several occasions said that "Tenchi Muyo sucks" and found them enjoying this immensely.
This is now a rent every two or three weeks. I even plan on buying it very soon. I just can't stop watching it, na no da.

OK, I should make it clear that I'm NOT a Tenchi fan, and all the fans I know who've seen this movie loved it. I also enjoyed it, but I wouldn't see it again. The animation is enjoyably bright and colorful, as is the art. The characters are lovable, but not well-developed, and often very corny. The storyline screams "Back to the Future" the whole time, and it isn't nearly as endearing as it might have been.

This movie is not only one of my favorite anime movies but one of my favorite all time movies. The first time I saw it I was very confused though so I recomend watching at least some of Tenchi Universe before seeing this. It's so wonderful to get to learn about Tenchi's mom and to see his dad not being a dirty old man. There is a mild amount of "Sailormoon-ish" nudity that is bairly noticible (and kinda funny in one scene). I've found that even people who arn't big Tenchi fans or even anime fans like this movie.

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is the perfect mix of action, drama, and comedy. The sound track is amazing and is one of the only anime soundtracks done by an American. It takes place after Tenchi Universe. Even if you have not seen the series, you can enjoy it. This movie was the first Tenchi product I ever saw, and I have since bought all things Tenchi (Even Tenchi In Tokyo). I think that the dub is as good if not better then the sub. If you are looking for a great movie or a new series, I suggest you by Tenchi Muyo In Love.
