Marking my 2000th review here on Mikomi is one of the more recent installments of the long-running Gundam franchise. Set before the start of the original Gundam series, The Origin explores a number of major story and character elements within the Universal Century timeline that led to the start of the One Year War. This includes the origins of Char Aznable with what started his quest of revenge against the Zabis, the formation of the Principality of Zeon, key events that led to the start of the One Year War, and Amuro learning about the development of the RX-78 Gundam he'd later pilot with White Base. With each episode of the OVA series going for at least an hour a piece and pushing as close as an hour and a half in later episodes, there is enough time in each episode to dabble into the different pieces of its story that would later lead up to the original Gundam series as prominent characters within the series get focused on to explore how they are shaped by the formation of the Principality and the escalations that build up to the One Year War with Char, Amuro, Sayla Mass, and Garma Zabi getting major focus at points throughout the series. Other characters get their focus as well to flesh out secondary characters among the Zeon and Federation to show each have their admirable traits in spite of the bloodshed they participate in or facing due to the conflict between both empires. The animation is also well done with nicely detailed scenery and character designs given vivid color and excellent animated battle sequences involving humans, mechs, and battleships.

Gundam: The Origin isn't without its imperfections. The recaps seen at the start of each episode can be lengthy to watch being close to 10 minutes in a couple later episodes and it retains some of the Gundam franchise's flaws involving heavily dramatizing some of the key dramatic events that unfold. Plus, the OVA series' use of CG animation for mechs can come off jarring compared to the regular animation.

Still if you've enjoyed dabbling into the Universal Century timeline of the Gundam franchise, Gundam: The Origin is recommended watching as it helps fill in a good number of holes regarding the developments of the One Year War and the origins of Char Aznable.
