While Macross Plus was a little more enjoyable for me than Macross II, a good number of things within it felt a bit too formulaic and flawed for me to get totally latched on. The characters central to this title's love triangle are quite archetypal. Isamu's the hot shot pilot; Guld the short-fused, level-headed pilot; and Myung the strong, independent woman that the two men desire to hook up with. Speaking of Isamu and Guld, their short-fused and hot-headed personalities made them hard for me to care about at points. While the chemistry between the three in the love triangle and the bits revealed about their past together is laid out solid enough where their bonds are believable, the ego clashes between Isamu and Guld throughout much of the OAV series made me care less for who would get Myung and the triangle never even receives a proper resolution. And don't even get me started on the typical setup in how the antagonist comes about.

A shame that things are formulaic with the plot as Macross Plus had an impressive presentation laid out for the time it was made. A mix of CG and cel-shaded animation was used in rendering a number of the scenes in this OAV featuring clean details, vibrant colors and impressive animation found with Valkyrie clashes in the skies and on the ground, as well as the holographic projections of AI pop idol Sharon Apple during her tests, concerts and later events in the series. The title's soundtrack is composed by Yoko Kanno which is as usual, great quality and worth listening to throughout Macross Plus and a great contribution to Macross' music angle.

Yet for as impressive as Macross Plus was on its aural and visual presentation, I was quite disappointed in its love triangle as the two men going for Myung's affections weren't too likeable to me and were too cliched compared to Alto from Macross Frontier and Hikaru from the original Macross series. Not to mention the way in which the antagonist comes along was a bit on the shallow side. I guess I just can't find myself enjoying titles in the Macross franchise if they are in a movie or OAV format considering the limited amount of time they have to establish their plot and characters compared to TV titles.

I love Macross plus, i don't know why I didn't write a review before...I mean this thing rekindled my love for anime...After Macross 2...I thought this was the end for me...But alas... This came and I was like WHOA!!! I mean the return of transforming mecha the way it was intended to be...Conflict...Guld versus Isamu...YF-21 versus YF-19...and two different singers...Sharon Apple and Myung...and the mystery of AI...I loved everyminute of Macross Plus...I own the VHS and DVD...Yes I am a mecha freak, but the designs in this show and the charaters involved got you pulling for one or the other as the story progressed...Not since has another Macross story or mecha story for that matter taken me so far in so little episodes...Macross Plus...If you haven't watched it yet, it is a must...

Very impressed by this. The movie version is just a more comdensed version with 2 or 3 extra more mature scenes.
Well I think it was co-directed by Shinichiro Watanabe (Bebop) so you know it can't be bad. All in all it just has a very good feel to it.

I grew up with the original Macross series so I am a pretty die-hard fan with high expectations. The artwork and Yoko Kanno music were quite good, but the story was a bit undeveloped. The characters were interesting, but the super-testosterone rivalry between the two pilots got a little old, and the rape sideplot of Mei Yun didn't really belong. Fighting a virtual diva that gains control of the SDF computer is a bit lame for a villain(ess). The combat sequences were exciting, and only bested by Macross Zero.

Somehow I got hold of used VHS tapes of the four volumes of Macross Plus, yet waited for around a year before actually watching them. If only I'd known that this would turn out to be quite possibly the best mecha-action OVA I've ever seen! Since I know very little about the Macross sub-genre (you don't really need to, in order to enjoy this gem), I was surprised at the all-around quality of the series. What it did remind me of was Cowboy Bebop, what with the music by Yoko Kanno, co-direction by Shinichiro Watanabe, beautiful artwork, a plot that rivals the best CB episodes, the Spike-esque personality of Dyson, and I swear, Spike's voice in the person of Sharon Apple's evil manager, Marj (speak of the devil--Mike Toole at "Anime Jump!" describes Macross Plus as "unmistakeably the direct predecessor to Cowboy Bebop"). This fast-moving OAV has a neat feel to it. The transforming fighters were really cool--especially the way the YF-21 could "warp" itself into different shapes. "New Edwards" base was a nice touch, too. Anyway, just a few quibbles: what was the deal with that mysterious phone call Guld and Dyson both got? Also, I thought the final episode ended kind of suddenly--I think I understand what happened. For a more detailed and satisfying ending, in my opinion, watch the movie version once.

My favorite line:
Yang: "Skill has nothing to do with this--it's going to take pure luck this time"
Dyson: "Luck is one of my skills"

Very impressive. I've never really been a Macross guy, never really had the chance, but after this I'll look into it. I tried watching this on tape first and fell asleep. After buying it on DVD on a whim, i love this OVA. The japanese voices add a dimension that was lacking in the dub.
The characters didn't impress me much. The two male characters reminded me too much of 80's American movies, Top Gun, Iron Eagle or something like that. Anyways the music was awesome. "Voices" is a very sick tune.
The animation at the beginning and end of the movie is fast and furious. I was definately impressed with the quality on the DVD.
An obvious pick up for mecha fans. I'm more of a Gundam person, but you can't deny excellence. (well you can, but then you'd just be a stubborn bastard, like me, lol)

Two words : "Freakin' awesome!"
While I'm not one for mecha shows, the Macross Plus OAV Series definitely showed me that mecha can be awesome.
The animation and art is some of the best I have ever seen before. The mecha fight scenes in the sky were beautiful and very fluid. Macross Plus quite possibly has the best soundtrack I have ever heard in an animated feature before with songs that are very pop to just downright spooky and haunting.
The story is very captivating all the way till the end. With the grudge between friends and the wonderfully played out love triangle, everything was executed rather well. The ending was, by far, one of the best endings I have seen in all things anime.
If you're a long time fan of anime or a newcomer, run out and buy this one now. After watching, you'll see why this one will be called a classic in the years on down the road.

Macross Plus is a stunning feast for the eyes and a raptuous celebration for the ears. Combining unbelievable cutting-edge animation with haunting and beautiful music, Macross Plus is a joy for long time anime fans and an ideal jumping on point for anime newbies.
Though a little light in the story department, one will not notice because of the unbelievable animation and swirling hypnotic music. So what if the characters are stereotyped cut-outs, who cares if the story is predictable and cliched? That's not what's important in this anime. Macross Plus promises unbelievable action scenes (forget Top Gun, this is fighter-jocky action at its best!) and the best soundtrack EVER, and it delivers, in spades. The mecha is better than any previous Macross incarnation, and the aircraft actually behave fairly believably. I really must stress the subtitled version, though. The dub is not bad, but one should really experience this as it should be, in origional Japanese, since sound is such an important part of the Macross franchise.
I recommend this to anyone who loves fighter action or anime. A definate buy, and a very solid effort.

Although not the epitome of Macross (That would be the original Do You Remember Love, not the dubbed), it is the difinitive. Great animation, great characters, great mechas, great music, the needed love triangle and the infamous power of songs. A must buy. Each episode ends leaving you to want more. And the music is perfectly fitted into the theme at the moment. From exciting to creepy. The storyline was great, i don't know how anyone could be confused, it was pretty straight forward. GO BUY IT NOW. BUY IT.

Macross Plus is by far the best saga in the Macross series and one of the best OVA series of all time. It has everything, great animation, breath taking scenes, giant mecha, a good story with good character design and outstanding music that you can listen to for hours.

Definitely a buy. Better than Macross Plus: The movie. Unlike the movie version, this isn't chopped up. The series version has more plot. The greatest part is that it doesn't contain the gore, sex, and nudity that most other japanese cartoons have, but it still retains the imaginative nature. This mini-series has great animation with a great soundtrack. Most of the characters are slick and have a realistic personality. The dialogue and the performance of the dubbers were perfect together.
The plot is neithor complicated nor confusing. Easy to tag along, but for some, a second watch might be needed.
What made this even better was the climax that occured at the fourth episode. Nothing but style.
Also, it was nice seeing some of the old mechas from Clash.
Nothing like the theme of deceit.

I must agree with the others ahead of me, this anime has the best art and animation I have seen yet and the music was really good too! The characters on the other hand were hard to like up intill the very last. The story was confuseing and there was uneeded nudity. It is one that I can not say I would recomend buying but if you love good art and don't mind being confused half the time,(and you don't have kids!) I would sujest renting it.

Watch 10 10 5 9 5 The Coyote [series:159#64]
Ok this is the best animation and art out yet bar none. but a story line that is confuseing at best (at least till the very end, very frustrateing) and nudity that bears no point what soever make this one too much of a split to rate Parents avoid this one. But if you love anime art, animation, and music, this ones tough to beat the art and animation are unparalled and the music is only out done by Coyboy beebop
