It`s the year 2040 and the world is flourishing with several colonies and advanced technology. AI is near perfection and the currently biggest star is the almost completed artificial singer Sharon Apple. All that`s missing are the actual feelings, which instead are supplied by Myung Fang Lone. Sharon`s next concert is planned to be at the planet Eden, where at the same time a contest is going on between Isamu Dyson and Guld Bowman, two fighter pilots, about whose experimental veritech the military should buy. Isamu, Guld and Myung where once childhood friends but after an accident seven years ago they parted. Now when Myung once again appears the old disputes are once again awakened. And when an unstable and illegal AI technique is installed in Sharon the situation gets dangerous.

A rehash of the (4-episode) OAV series with slight plot changes and the addition of new Sharon Apple songs being the most noticable of the changes.

114min Movie.

ok, so i own this movie...subbed no less...why did i get this if i own like macross plus OVA on both VHS and DVD? Extra fighting scene...although short, you get to see what happens to Guld and the AI fighter...having said that, do you need to own both the movie and the OVA...probably not, but i really didn't get into the movei as much as the OVA...it is still a BUY for every Macross fan...

So, which is better, the four-part OAV series or the movie? I found two reviews that favored the OAVs and one that went with the movie. Personally, my objectivity about which version best explains the plot may have suffered because I watched the OAVs first, and I initially wasn't sure if the movie was revealing the plot clearly or I was simply remembering it from the OAVs. Either way, I was surprised that the exciting opening space dogfight scene had been dispensed with. Numerous scenes seemed to have been trimmed down to a few seconds then patched together as a sort of video montage. But in some ways the story seemed easier to follow in the movie, perhaps because important points were revealed sooner. I expected--even hoped--that a certain confusing scene involving a mysterious phone call would be cut, but it was completely retained. Though another scene probably wasn't new--I just wasn't paying enough attention during the OVAs--I now know what happened to Marj, who I had previously thought had gotten off scot-free. It wasn't until around halfway through the movie that I first identified a significant new scene that definitely wasn't in the OVAs. So far, the OVAs were definitely ahead in the "race". It turns out, however, that the bulk of the "never before seen footage" was used in the movie's climax--thus providing a significantly better ending than the 4th OAV had, in my opinion. Extra lines help explain Guld's repressed memories of an unhappy event that had involved Myung and Isamu seven years earlier. Also, you learn more about Sharon and her bizarre motivation to please Isamu. The net result is that both Guld and Sharon become charachters you can feel more sympathy for. More detail--some of it fairly grisly--is provided about how Guld and Isamu fight for the sake of Myung, leading, I think, to a more pleasing conclusion than the OVAs had. So, which version comes out on top? Well, if I could only have one, I'd say the improved climax makes the movie preferable. Perhaps best of all would be to watch OVAs 1-3, then watch the rest of the story in movie form!

My favorite line: "Shift mind controller to coquettish pulse mode"

This is all I've seen of the MACROSS series so I don't know how valid my opinion is, but from what I saw of the MACROSS OVA I thought this was an impressive tale on its own.
What I thought was both odd and refreshing of the story was how it was telling almost three stories at once between the dog fight over who was the better pilot to the emergence of a malicious computer entity pop idol to the love-triangle between the three main characters. Yes truly an interesting tale. The whole "test pilot" story line fell into the shadow of the other two plots but they were more original and interesting anyway so I fell little loss.
The characters were very interesting and complex and I found myself really interested in how three people who seem so close can be driven so far apart (All is explained if you pay attention and catch the clues). I have to admit that I was getting into the music a lot since it was really good for an Anime. The ending is somewhat like NAZCA where a lot gets resolved but you might get the nagging feeling that something is missing. In any case, MACROSS is still one of the better stand-alone series you could pick up.

This is just a re-edited version of the ova series, put into one movie. It has a few new scenes in it. The artwork, music, and character design are about the same, however they do tell the story a little different, but it does end the same way. If you are a Macross freak like I am then you will like both the OVA's and the movie, if not then I would tell you to watch the movie.
