Both races are at peace on Earth when a new alien race called the "Marduk" appear within the Solar System. While covering the first battle between the U.N. I've heard of enough confusion regarding exactly what Macross II's place in the franchise continuity is supposed to be with some saying it's a sequel to Macross: Do You Remember Love? while others say it takes place in a different continuity from both the movie and original TV series. Regardless, I wasn't too thrilled upon watching my way through this OAV series. It introduces a new foe in the form of the Marduk alien race and features the same elements that the Macross franchise is well known for: pop idols, mecha and a love triangle. Yet while the action sequences featuring mecha and battleship clashes between UN Spacy and Marduk alien forces are a treat to see onscreen with a good amount of fluid movement onscreen during battle scenes, the series fails to effectively deliver well with its use of music and love triangle much like Macross Zero. Like the older titles, much of the music for Macross II failed to hook me with only a couple notable songs hooking my interest towards the end of the series. Plus with the lack of fleshing out and proper development of characters (especially among the Marduk), I could care less about the love triangle between Hibiki, Ishtar and Sylvia. About the only major element to the series I could praise was its look on military censorship of the media explored through Hibiki's disgust of the UN Spacy's coverup of how much of a threat the Marduk truly were and doing what he could to get the truth out to the public. Other than that, this is perhaps the weakest title within the Macross franchise I've had a chance of seeing to date.
