Clannad marginally enjoyable, and After Story much more enjoyable, I decided to check this one out and see how it compares. Art, Animation & Character Designs Being a movie, the artwork of course was far superior to the series. Far richer details, far richer colors but the animation.... nothing special. Again, the lighting effects were just outstanding. Maybe not as breathtaking as the opening sequence to After Story, but darn close. Our characters were for the most part similar to the previous installments. Music The OP was pretty enjoyable. It was both inspiring and depressing at the same time.... not that it was a depressing piece, but the fact that I pretty much knew what to expect after seeing the series. The soundtrack for the most part was light pieces with pianos, and string instruments. Tunes one would expect in emotionally charged scenes. The ED was a nice touch. A beautiful piece with female vocals.... slow and melodic. Series and Episode Story To sum up this this one, it was basically the Clanned TV series really condensed into this single movie. Thus being the case, you can't expect it to go in-depth with character developments and solid background stories. Rather, some things will have to be assumed and as is. Now of course, if you've seen the series, then this isn't a problem however, if new to the franchise, then it might be a bit confusing or not as impactful. As expected of Clannad, this movie could really do your emotions in. It's not as melodramatic as the series, rather, it seemed more realistic portraying emotional situations and scenes. And nearing the end, darn heartwrenching! Overall, this was a welcome to the franchise. I found it more serious and more believable than its TV counterpart. If you liked Clannad TV or After Story, then do pick this up. Last updated Saturday, November 13 2010. Created Saturday, November 13 2010. |

Consequently, I wasn't that happy during the first half of this show. Giving the also-rans no more than cameo appearances was fine but both lead Characters, Nagisa as well as Tomoya, were very different people now: Nagisa was much stronger from early on, Tomoya was much less witty and didn't have a lot to do for supporting this girl. I was bewildered why she would fall for him right from the start - the whole development appeared awfully rushed to me... no wonder as they condensed the essence of 22 TV episodes into no more than 60 minutes, including a number of unnecessary silly-funny scenes that stood in sharp contrast to the rest of the story. Character development is the weakest aspect of this work, and the bipolar nature of the movie almost turned me off. But this work made its comeback with Nagisa's stage performance which worked a lot better than what I consider an overly melodramatic climax of the TV series. From this moment on the movie began to enchant me. And not knowing the game, the sudden change of mood later hit me hard, allowing me to suffer along with the victims. The second half of this movie can only get the highest praise from me due to its intensity. Who would have thought they're able to credibly tell almost the complete Story of the game in 94 minutes? Technical attributes are what I expected them to be: Art is similar to the TV series, Animation is so-so (some cool scenes take turns with stills right in the middle of action scenes). Music has the Dango Daikasoku song (that I like so much about the series) only in a short reference version but a lot of other beautiful songs and musical tracks, emphasizing the vast changes of mood during this movie excellently. All in all, a surprisingly strong drama during the second half, presenting occasional fun as well as deepest depression without looking like patchwork. Most of the time this movie makes good use of the airing time it has, leaving me breathlessly watching this show. Sure a 13 episodes version of this arc would have been more of my liking but as a movie, it's fine. Last updated Thursday, June 12 2008. Created Tuesday, June 10 2008. |

TV series. While I did like the greater focus on their relationship, the movie's pace felt rushed at several points thanks to the limited amount of time in the movie format. Because of the pacing, some points of the character relationships felt forced and lacked any natural progression. The After Story section of the game is supposed to be made into a second TV series for Clannad. So, I'll be looking forward to how KyoAni pulls off that series. As for this movie, Clannad fans can see it for the greater focus on Nagisa and Tomoya. Just don't expect things to be touching throughout the entire movie. Last updated Sunday, May 25 2008. This adaptation of Clannad puts more focus on Nagisa and Tomoya's relationship which should please fans of the coupling. This movie also includes events from the After Story portion of the game so expect things to get quite depressing compared to the light-hearted tone of the ||||||||

I also don't like the art that much. The people are more like the game but I like the KyoAni look, even it is just a bunch of bodies with the same face attached to all the girls. The plot is different, it just focuses on Tomoya and Nagisa, the others are there but are background (except for Tomoyo). This is Nagisa's path animated exclusively. BTW It will spoil the ending if you watch this movie. Though KyoAni could take a different route but I doubt it. Last updated Wednesday, March 12 2008. Created Wednesday, March 12 2008. |

Celtic Irish folk group. The word clannad is a made-up Celtic word created by the band as their name (it comes from 'an clann as Dobhar' meaning 'family from Dore'.) But it is also the name of a popular Japanese visual novel (wiki link) by the same software company that produced the visual novels that spawned the anime series - Kanon and Air TV. Also announced is an anime series by the same name (to be released in 2008), produced by Kyoto Animation and directed by Tatsuya Ishihara, who also worked on Air TV, Kanon and the ever popular The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
