One day, Sendo Kazuki and Takase Mizuki find themselves hijacked by their eccentric friend Kuhonbutsu Taishi (who calls them "My brother and sister") into going to a strange, crowded, noisy and smelly place--a doujinshi convention. (Think of this as a sort of Otaku no Video that deals with doujinshi rather than anime.)

I wasn't sure what to make of Comic Party throughout its run when I rented it via Netflix. While it does offer a decent look of Kazuki knowing of the ups and downs of making and selling doujinshi, I couldn't help but get a bit irritated by some of the cliched and eccentric character personalities that he interacted with such as motor mouth Kazuki, the overly cute and klutzy printer Chisa, self-absorbed doujinshi artist Eimi and shy, timid seller Aya. The characters are either too energetic where I felt like I wanted to toss them down a well or I couldn't care for them because of the character archetype they were tacked on with. The visuals also looked a bit rough as animated details weren't so smooth with character designs.

Kazuki learning the ropes of the doujinshi world was essentially the best I got out of the show as he is dragged into a hobby he takes interest in and learns of what to do and not to do in order to get his work to sell such as advertising, enjoying the creation of his work and not to go too overboard with wanting profits. He gains new friends as a result of his new interest and his childhood friend, Mizuki, finds herself slowly learning to adjust to Kazuki's new interest as the show drags on. Beyond these developments, I could care less about the other characters as their main roles were essentially just to support and give advice to Kazuki throughout the series.

If you're looking for an otaku-focused anime, I wouldn't consider Comic Party a must-see as it didn't really do too well at hooking me to its other characters since they were either too obnoxious or cookie-cutter to grab my interest. Genshiken provides a more fun and enjoyable experience of what life is like for the modern-day otaku.

Out of bordem, I picked this one up a while back. It was slightly entertaining but that was about it.

Art, Animation & Character Designs
I must have got a bad copy. Based on the copy I got, the artwork was sorta.... washed out. I'm sure that's the case. Aside from that, the animation was average. Character designs were well done..... but of course, you still have your stereotypical designs and typecasts.

Music
The OP wasn't of my tastes at all. It was a pop piece with female vocals. As for the rest of the soundtrack, nothing noticeable.

Series and Episode Story
Although it was entertaining, I really didn't get into the plot. There was plenty of humor and silly moments and antics, however, even then, I really didn't laugh at it much. As Stretch had mentioned below, "Taishi" was about the only one that really carried this series.

Overall, it was a light entertainment that really didn't amount to much.

Rent Stretch [series:810#628]
Although Kazuki is meant to be the main character, for me Comic Party will always be "The Taishi Show"! When it comes to comedy, Taishi virtually carries this series on his back single-handedly. It would really have been up a creek without him--the humor offered by the other characters was just adequate (the rivalry between Yuu and Michi was good). As it is, it's worth watching just to soak up his eccentric personality and bits of wisdom. Well, actually the comedy goes into a lull for several episodes after Kazuki suffers a demoralizing setback. This got uncomfortable, and around episode 11 I found myself wondering if the series' makers would manage to pull a decent ending out of their hat. Fortunately, they did, and the hilarity that I remembered from the first few episodes came back. Everybody compares this show to Otaku no Video, (and there certainly are simularities) but it seems a good deal more realistic and plausible to me (even with the character of Taishi!). After him, I'd say the second best thing about Comic Party was the education it offered. I didn't know much about Doujinshi, and was intrigued at this glimpse into the comic sub-culture that exists in Japan.

My favorite line: "NOOOOOO!! Jesus help me!!!" --Taishi
