This is largely a pretty by-the-numbers sports comedy involving our titular heroine unknowingly taking up the sport of kickboxing when she dreams of being a pro wrestler and able to get wins in her first couple fights by the skin of her teeth. Not bad, but iffy if I'd rewatch it ever again due to its short length. Apparently, this was meant to be a 6-episode OVA series. But production of it was canned following its second episode.

Well, I wouldn't go so far as midnighter, but granted it was by no means an inspired piece of work.

There is, however, some originality to it. Ayane has been training for a long time to become a Pro Wrestler! A noble goal indeed. However, she just can't seem to get her foot in the door. Personally, I thought she was pretty good at it. Anyways, this random old guy finds her, notices her awesome legs, and signs her up for a fight. She thinks its for a wrestling match, but its really for the old guy's sport of choice: kick-boxing. She doesn't even realize its not wrestling until well after she enters the ring. But of course, her exceptional high-kicking technique serves her well anyways.

To put it concisely, it was easily entertaining enough to watch the whole 2 episodes, but not entertaining enough to bother keeping.

Ayane's High Kick is regurgitated, uninspired, unorigional anime. We've seen this before. A gruff coach discovers a sports prodigy and procedes to train said prodigy through tough love.
There is nothing distinguishing about High Kick. The two-parter ambles along switching from tragically unfunny humor to laughably cliche melodrama. Ayane looks like a bargain basement Ranma with a mullet and her opponent looks like a bimbo from Baywatch.
The dialogue is horrid and uninspired as the story, and the American voice cast seems to know it, turning in one of the worst dub performances I've ever heard. The cast ranges from over cartoony and exaggerated to monotone and dull. They sound bored, you'll be bored. There isn't even much effort to match mouth movement. The action is badly coreographed with choppy animation and an amazing amount of stock footage. It's no wonder Ayane is losing when she throws the same kick or punch combo every time. Kazuo Tatsugawa's character designs look like rejects from Slayers, increasing the overall derivative feel of the anime and the music sounds as by-the-numbers as the rest of the production.
I recommend avoiding this vapid, infantile attempt at 'entertainment.' Suitable for all ages.
