Been a while since I last seen anything Card Captor Sakura related. This movie delivers with the same stuff I had enjoyed from the TV series such as the teasing of potential relationships, Tomoyo's obsessive admiration in Sakura and Sakura's continuing quest to get the Clow Cards. Noticeably, the series seems to have benefited from its movie format presentation-wise as character designs looked better polished and animation was a bit more fluid in movement compared to the TV series. The movie introduces Syaoran's family and an old acquaintance of Clow Reed serving as the movie's antagonist. However, both these elements are a bit lackluster as the movie only digs briefly into exploring them as the movie villain was only used to fill in more time for the movie and Li's mother served only to provide a couple scenes of support to Sakura. Compared to the second movie, this one doesn't really do much to contribute to the show's plot other than cover how Sakura got a few of the Clow Cards that the TV series doesn't explore. It is still a decent watch for those who are well into watching Card Captor Sakura, but it won't be necessary to follow if you were expecting major developments like what the second movie provides.

I saw this movie out of order, but that doesn't matter. While it takes place after episode 35 (the end of season 1), the movie really has no impact on the TV series. In fact, I don't think any of the events in the movie are ever mentioned in the 2nd or 3rd season. That said, if you watch the movie immediately after episode 35, there is an event that ties it to episode 35. Since it had been a month since I watched CCS, I found myself really enjoying being back in that world. This movie marked a departure from the original series to date in that we have an actual villian (Madoushi) for Sakura to face (voiced by Hayashibara Megumi). Unfortunately, this is the weakest area of the movie. We do get shown Madoushi and her relationship with Clow Reed when Kero-chan recalls their story, but it is only given a light brush treatment. Madoushi's motives are told, but I wasn't sold simply because we didn't see enough of her time with Reed to make an impact. On the plus side, we get to see Li-kun's family including his powerful magic-using mother. I now understand why she dispatched Li-kun to Japan to find the Clow Cards in the first place and why she allowed him to stay after Sakura finds the cards. There was almost no interactions between Li-kun and his mother which was unfortunate. Should a 3rd movie be done, it would be nice seeing more of Li-kun's mother. The art in this is very beautiful and the animation is stepped up from the TV series. However, in the begining of the movie, one would suspect that this was the TV series on the big screen. That's not a problem, just an observation. Bottom line: while not a great movie, it is still a nice romp in new location and a nice time in the world of CCS.Last updated Wednesday, February 23 2005. The artwork is lovely as always, and the Hong Kong setting adds some local color. It's nice to see our friends in a longer piece too, especially since the show has been episodic up to this point. My only complaint is that the story takes a while to get going. Still, there's lots of fun along the way. This movie gives us the first glimpse of Li's family, as well as our first look at Clow Reed. All in all, a must-see for CCS fans.

What more needs to be said? The Cardcaptor Sakura movie is definately a title that should be added to the shelves of anime fans everywhere. The story line does go a little bit off of the "new card a week" type of plot which makes this a bit more interesting. As for the animation, it is exactly what one would expect out of Cardcaptor Sakura. Be sure to get this one when it comes out!

CCS the Movie is a rather solid anime. Beautiful character designs, an interesting story, and high quality animation make this a treat. I've always loved the Cardcaptor Sakura character designs, and the animation in the TV show was very good, but the movie looks absolutely gorgeous. The Hong Kong setting was beautifully done, with exquisite detail and adds an interesting visual aspect. Strangely the color looks bleached out. Whereas the TV show was bright and vibrant, the movie looks rather cold. The voice cast, as usual, was excellent, particularly Sakura who actually sounds like a young girl, and not an adult trying to sound like one. The story was well pulled off, Sakura's 'miraculous' luck in winning the trip to Hong Kong is actually explained(!) though I do have a few complaints. (Spoiler) The opponent is initially described by Kero-chan as evil, yet by the end she is presented as merely misguided and...well, not very evil at all. This blatent personality inconsistency is distracting to the viewer and was either a rather amateurish oversight by the writers or a cheap ploy to mislead and set up the 'surprise' ending. That complaint aside, I really enjoyed Cardcaptor Sakura the Movie. Nice animation, solid writing, and a great voice cast made for a wonderful anime experience. I give it a buy, as its strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. Even if they havn't seen much of the TV show, anyone can still enjoy this. 12-3-01 Last updated Tuesday, January 08 2002.
