After 30 grueling days of fighting off wave after wave of assassins sent by the megalomaniacal vampire DIO (all the while traveling by plane, train, and automobile from Japan, through Southeast Asia, and across the Middle East), Jotaro and his allies have made it at last to Egypt where DIO lies in wait. DIO, striving to end the Joestar line that has stood in his way for 100 years, sends his final and most fervent team of Stand-user followers, the 9 Egyptian Gods, to eliminate Jotaro and his allies. Jotaro and his party now have only two weeks to make their way to DIO’s hideout in Cairo and eliminate him before Jotaro’s mother succumbs to DIO’s curse.

Continuing from the first series, Stardust Crusaders explores the second half of this Jojo's Bizarre Adventure arc where Jotaro and pals continue trekking through Egypt dealing with more enemy Stand users and eventually confronting Dio. Outside of the addition of new character Iggy (a self-absorbed dog with a sand-manipulating Stand) adding to the character dynamics of Jotaro's group, most of the anime follows the same plot narrative as the first series where Jotaro and his group combat an enemy Stand user for one to two episode arcs, some of whom the group have to get creative in trying to overcome beyond just fighting. The final episodes offer some shocking developments during the final set of fights in the series that help break up the somewhat monotonous narrative that Jotaro had developing by that point. The comedy within the series got a bit hit or miss for me as well where I got amusement out of the absurd antics of some characters like the useless enemy pair of Oingo and Boingo, while attempts to rely on gross-out or sexual humor turned me off at points. Still in spite of some issues with narrative and humor, Egypt Arc was still a fitting conclusion to the Stardust Crusaders arc of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and I look forward to continuing further with the series at some point with the anime adaptation of Diamond is Unbreakable.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:3016#628]
(Eight episodes watched):

The craziest sort of supernatural martial artistry you ever will see. That's a quick description of the JoJo franchise. The previous series invented a whole new fictional dimension of martial arts, in which certain people can use proxy fighters called 'Stands' as weapons. These may be anything from anthropomorphic, fist swinging ones (like Jotaro's) to a deadly puddle of water (seriously--see episodes one and two). Each opponent has some unique and highly dangerous skill which Jotaro and his companions must outwit and defeat using their own stands. This show doesn't take itself completely seriously and indeed is so close to insane that it has the effect of making me smirk afterwards. The team has finally reached Egypt, and after fighting their way through the Tarot card inspired set of Stand users they find a whole new set waiting for them, these named after ancient Egyptian Gods. It's hard to remember what has already happened, since it was so bizarre, but it was definitely fun and I was looking forward to more of the same.

Episode three had me repeatedly laugh-out-louding as two brothers who are Stand users, and one of which has the talent that he can vaguely predict the future via a bizarre manga he reads, attempt to assassinate Jotaro. But somehow every prediction they make gets twisted and comes back to bite them in the ass. Every now and then Jotaro and his comrades run into one or more of these comic villains, and the amount of talent invested in this franchise shows in the fact that I wind up laughing more than I do while watching most pure comedy anime. Even if the author and the maker suddenly forgot how to produce their dramatic, action story, they could always make an above average comedy instead. Another villain, Mariah, manages to turn Joseph into a human magnet--anything can happen in this show. You would almost think that the author was high while writing this.

But anything can become tiresome if repeated too often. Will Jotaro and the others ever catch up to Dio? It gradually became clear that at the rate they are moving, there would need to be yet another series after this one to do that. For all the slapstick, it was getting tiring to wait so long for a major advancement in the plot. Dio can recruit an unlimited number of freakish Stand users to serve him, and we get some laughs out of them, but that sort of makes this a fight-of-the-week show. A better than average fight-of-the-week show, but one nevertheless. Some of the stunts they pull are just plain crazy and don't make much sense. For example, if the bullets Hol Horse fired into a pipe took several seconds to ricochet a short distance, would they be going fast enough to hurt the target anyhow? It seemed like the writers were running out of fresh ideas. And Kakyoin, my favorite team member, had been disabled and in the hospital for most of this season. Sometimes you ate taken by surprise when you loyally start watching yet another episode of an anime, only to find that the last of your interest in it has somehow leaked away without you realizing it. I finally just got tired of this show, and while I downloaded the remaining episodes, I haven't been able to bring myself to watch them just yet. I guess that even originality can get tiresome if it goes on for long enough--and it seems like it is being used as an excuse to avoid advancing the main plot.
