Digimon is one of my guilty pleasure anime. Sure it has enough predictable elements: several children are on a journey where they see various monsters a la Pokemon, Digimon are beaten to the point of defeat until their owner finds the power within to give them a boost to beat their enemies like many past generic action titles, and the enemies are shallow villians with no redeemable qualities with a desire to rule either the Digital World and/ or the human world.

What sets Digimon apart from Pokemon though is the depth given to the human characters and how this affects the relationships they share with both their friends and Digimon partners. All of these children have their own inner doubts and backgrounds that affect who they are and how they act in front of others. Throughout their journey, the children undergo their own coming-of-age experiences which allow them to come to terms with their inner doubts. This fares better than Pokemon which is focused too much on Satoshi's neverending Pokemon master journey and the various relationships the trainers have with their Pokemon.

Visually, Digimon Adventure 01's artwork isn't anything to scream out loud about. Character designs looked kind of plain and rather simple, especially with human characters. It's also pretty noticeable that there are reused clips now and then considering the long length of the series.

Digimon's character depth stood out for me in the pool of anime titles used in promoting children's video or trading card games. I wouldn't consider buying the series, but I wouldn't have a problem watching the first season on TV.

[I've watched this series in the Mandarin version so maybe I'm not making sense here and there.]
So what makes this anime get higher ratings in my opinion?
Art/Animation: Artwise, it's an okay to me. Not too ugly, not too weird. Quite fluent when it comes to the evolutions and I just *hearts* love the evolution scenes; lots of great graphics there.
Character designs: Not too bad, a refreshing thing for me after getting used to CLAMP's beautiful artwork. Anyways, the characters are cute and aren't displayed in detailed pencilscratches and such.
Music: The music is pretty good. I love the Op/Ed themes, you can just listen to it endlessly. Wada Kouji has a good voice there, even Maeda Ai. The character themes... erhm, haven't listened to them yet, but I've heard the songs where all characters sing together and they're pretty good if not cute [the Digimon, I mean]
Series Story: Pretty well developed in my opinion. I believe Digimon just has a different atmosphere compared to Pocket Monsters; more like growing up, learning to trust those around you and friendship. I love how the characters are developed from their seemingly ignorant traits [from the very beginning] to reliable friends who will do everything to save each other.
The first part of the series is pretty adventurous; survival is needed when one's stranded in a world like the Digital one. That's where all characters get their own spotlights and interactions.
The second part is more about getting the last destined. And I still love the brother-sister relationship of Taichi and Hikari next to the brother-brother relationship of Yamato and Takeru. Contrary to some popular beliefs [from the dub, that is] Yamato and Takeru ARE blood-related brothers.
Overall it's worth watching if one loves adventure and kids saving the world stuff. ^_^

I love this show! I happen to be a big fan and I miss it. I feel that the charaters were developed well except the animation could be a bit better. The first anime I really heard of was pokemon, and when digimon came out, everyone thought that it was a copy of pokemon -_-. I was the first person to find out about it and this series isn't just for little kids. A teen myself still watch the series. I loved all the series except for three which I still watched because I'm true fan. I also appreciate the hints of romance also and I can relate to some of the real life situations. It's a cute series and its a sure one to pick up! ^_^

I like this show. It was sort of the show which got me into Anime. Since this was the first real anime I saw, I have to like this. I think the story is not bad, so the animation is not great, but this story has a point. I hate it when people compare this with Pokemon becuase this show is not Pokemon. This show actually has a plot and the characters are actually likable. Plus there's little hints of romance here and there, making this anime even better (though I must say all the other seasons mess up the story a lot).

I really love this anime! It was my first "real" favourite. And I'm not review of the dub that is just horrible!I can't stand it!>.<
Well lets talk about the japanese version instead. First:all the music is wonderful.Just wonderful.Wada Kouji does a great job with the opening, Butterfly. The evolution song and the endings are also great. But I think that AiM, that sings the endings, have done better.
The story becomes better during the series. At the beginning it's really slow,I know. Myself, I think the best starts with Vandemon story. He is really cool. The voices is much better also.Gomamon's voice is so cute^o^
The best with the japanese version...There arent any silly jokes!
The german version is really good also. They have done a really great job with the dub+the music.

Digimon is my ultimate guilty pleasure; I get up early every morning to watch it, even reruns. That aside, the first time I heard of Digimon I thought...well, you know, the "P" word, but I took a chance sat down and watched it one day. It was somewhere near the end of the first season and I actually found it quite interesting so I stuck with it and eventually went back and watched the beginning.
This is by no means the best and the animation is full of stock footage and the dubbing is just bad but it's cute and engaging and the characters are well developed. There is a lot of filler in the beginning of every season but it does have continuity between episodes and you really see the characters growing, something that really can't be said for...that other show.
I should note that I'm giving the music a 9 for the Japanese music not the dub music. One of my favorite anime songs of all time is "Butterfly" the opening theme for the first season.
I think Digimon is a well done series and worth watching, but I recommend watching it in reverse: watch a little of the last arc first then go back and watch it from the beginning, otherwise you might get a little bored by the time you get to the really good stuff.

This is undoubtly my favorite anime. I dunno why. There's just something about it. The characters are more life like than ones in other animes. And it's *so* not some Pokemon rip-off. It's a very enjoyable series. I hate Pokemon with a passion yet I love this. Overall, it's good for anyone who enjoys a series full of lovable characters and cute little creatures.

When it came out, I never thought that it was a Pokemon copy because both are very different. First of all, Pokemon is more based on the game and very linear and not spontaneous at all while Digimon is more story-wise and has a great thing going on as an anime. The show should not be considered a Pokemon at all. The story is great, I enjoy its light-hearted feel and sometimes dark also. Too bad they took out most of the main characters from the 1st series and brought in all those crappy ones in the 2nd one... *sigh* Too bad eh?

Hmmm... well for starters I'll be nice and send out a spoiler notice on this review....................
Ok well heres the meat of it. I personally can't stand pokemon and when this show came out in kmy local area i liked it. The animation was good for a kids show and the plot and characters where good as well, however soon the old guys, ie tai et all grow up and a sew set show up, the new set isnt drawn as well, the characters are not nearly as interesting and the animation is lacking, you will prolly like it up to the new begining ie new digi destined, but the movieand everything thereafter is ...lacking

Me also, I haven't seen a lot about Digimon, but the firts impression is that it looks like a cool show. I have to say that in lot of aspects is superior than it's great rival and market revelation, Pokemon. I like a lot more the Digimons than the Pokenon, the first ones are better-done than the Pokemons, they are real characters, not just cute characters (like Pikachu). Also the bad-guys are lot better and the idea of putting more "main" characters have worked. Also that little boy that keeps away of the group adds an emotional part of the story. Pokemon of course is superior in some aspects, for example there are lot more of Pokemon than Digimons, I prefer Dexter explaining me a Pokemon, than that thing that talks about the Digimon. So i'll say that Pokemon is a great Kodomo, but not more, instead Digimon makes a lot more interesting show than Pokemon for a grown up audience.
For the ones who missed and episode is a good idea to rent it, but anyway try to not miss it.

I admet I havn't seen them all but I think it is a cute show. It's not one with a lot of depth but the charicters are cool and a lot of fun! If you like Pokemon, but you think it is a little soft, this will be a good one for you! Parents this is a great one for your kids!

Pokemon's rival has practically hit places anywhere Pokemon has, but now Digimon is here. In many aspects, it's a cool show, first of all it's alot rougher and tougher than Pokemon. The characters are also alot more life-like than in most animes. Most of all there is emotional depth in the story. But, buying or renting digimon is only for the people who have missed episodes. Watching it would be alot better.
