Shikimori Kazuki is a 17-year old high school student at the prestigious school for magic users, Aoi Academy. All students have magical abilities and have a certain number of spells they can cast in their life -- normal students can cast several thousand spells and very powerful students, like the very rich Kazetsubaki Kuriko, can cast over 100,000 in their life. But for poor Kazuki-san, he can only cast eight. After that, if he attempts to use magic, it will only result in his turning to dust. As such, he is shunned by the girls at school and really has no friends to speak of.

One day, that all changes when new transfer student Miyami Yuuna is in Kazuki's dorm room awaiting his arrival and announces that she's his wife. As such, she offers to fix him a meal, prepare a bath for him, or do the "other" wife activity. In a flustered state, he declines. The next day, Kuriko begins coming on to strong to Kazuki, much to the dismay of Yuuna and the males in Kazuki's class. Then the cute kendo girl who's a first-year high school student, Kamishiro Rin, suddenly announces her intentions for him, though it disgusts her to do so. Now the guys in Kazuki's class are REALLY furious that he has three bijin (beautiful girls) wanting him!

The reason for Kazuki's sudden fortune with the ladies is that it has been discovered that his family roots go back to the most powerful magic users in Japan an Europe. As such, it is felt that the child (or children) Kazuki sires will be the most powerful magic users ever. So if Rin bares his child, her old family will unite and will regain some power. For Kuriko, her already powerful family will be even more powerful if she bares his child. But for Yuuna, even though baring such a child would do wonders for her family, her reasons go much deeper. For her, it is a childhood promise she made to Kazuki to be his bride when he, as a boy, made it snow for her on a hot summer day. Which girl will win the battle and get Kazuki? Will the guys in his class stop being jealous? Will the other girls in his class stop trying to chase him? Will Rin and Kuriko truly fall in love with Kazuki? Will Kazuki use all eight of his spells for the girls and thus lose his life for them?

After reading all the good reviews and the synopsis, I thought for sure I'm in for a good one.

Art, Animation & Character Designs
The art was nothing out of the ordinary. Just average. The animation was average as well. The character designs were somewhat below par but acceptable.

Music
The music? Nothing to speak of here. It was just... okay.

Series and Episode Story
I had high hopes for this one... based on reviews I read and such. However, after watching it through, I didn't think it was that great. It was good, but not as much as I had hoped. Maybe I had too much expectation. Character developments were good and the plot progresses nicely. The ending was satisfactory. There's your typical amount of ecchi moments and typical harem scenes.

Overall, it's good but not as good as I had hoped. But it is a cut above your average harem plots.

Being a fan of harem style anime, Maburaho is very good series. Although I haven't seen the entire series, what I've seen so far has been very interesting. The story begins with 17 year-old Shikimori Kazuki attending a school for magic users. In this school, what determines your worth is the number of spells a person can cast. The higher the number, the higher your worth. In the case of Kazuki, he only has 8 times that he is able to cast spells. After using them all up, he will "turn into ash." So you can imagine how he feels about himself and how his "friends" feel towards Kazuki. However, things change for him in a flash when he meets Yuna and then his life gets a massive overhaul. The animation is very well done with a few minor acceptions. The characters are pretty unique and add a major plus to the series. What bothers me a bit is the fact that some of the music in the show can get stuck in my head. It's so damn simple, it's scary. Overall, this is a great keeper. I'm still gonna collect the rest of it and I think you should too, if you're into this style of anime. For the collectors who like a little drama, check out volume 3.
Update: Feb. 14, 2006
I made it up to volume 6 and I have to admit that it was a long time coming. However, I'm gonna have to point out something that I think may sway your view. I won't change the "Buy" rank I've left because I think it's still valid. The point I want to make is that during the series, there's a change in one of the characters...Yuna (plays the "wife" of Kazuki) seems to grow more bitter coming to the close of the series. Why I put this out is because she apparently is a major part in the lead character's life. To me, though, it looks like she's more annoying than I ever thought. This leads me to disliken the entire series a bit. Not to the point of regretting the fact I bought all the discs (save the final). It just seems that the original writers of the anime lost all thought process. This may be a lack of ideas or just something that I probably don't understand. Once the final disc is released and only if I see something that's not to my liking, I'll aptly change my rating. For now, it's still a very good series to get.
Update: Apr 12, 2006
I've finally finished the series today. Now I can give a full review. The entire story comes together in the last two episodes. If you have watched the series up till the final disc, you'd probably think to yourself what some of the characters are doing and why do they have some importance in the show. When I watched it, it just came as something that I should have guessed but never came into my mind. I still don't agree how Yuna's character was handled during the last few episodes of the series. If she had kept her attitude from the earlier series, I think it would have a greater effect on my review. It probably would have become a 10 for the series and episodes. I am dropping the episode rating from a 9 to a 7 because some of the episodes were pretty offbeat due to the sudden change of Yuna. To do a quick comparison between the 2 different Yuna's, the one in the earlier episodes show her absolute compassion and dedication to Kazuki. Once the 4th volume arrives, Yuna changes from compassionate to highly jealous and clingy. Even though the last episode brought Yuna's compassion back, it was just a setback from what's to follow. I won't spoil the last episode so you'll have to watch and decide. So, in conclusion, I'mn sticking with my original "Buy" choice because it is a good harem series though it lacks a bit in the character dept.

Before reading this review, this anime is my favorite. The other reviews can help you if you need to know if you want to pick this to watch. My review is on the R1 itself.

After a YEAR of waiting for this Anime in English, I am so disappointed at the result. The VA's might not quite match the Japanese VA's but that's to be expected. What's not to be expected is the vocal change in each character, (Ex: Kuriko's shifts from the Kuriko voice to the regular VA's voice about 3 times in the 4 episodes.). Another thing not to be expected is the badly mispronounciation of Kazuki's name. Hello it's 'Ka' 'Zu' 'Key'. Not Kazoo key.(Yuna does it TWICE in the first episode). And his last name is She Key More E. Not Shiki Mer E. I was appalled at the director's lack of quality, Was he on Crack or something during recording?

A real shining moment is the Translator (Who's Korean translating Japanese to English. Go figure) He takes things that are obviously wrong (The fansubs talk about his 'Aunt'. Why would his 'Aunt' Genes matter to Kazuki? He's not a direct descendant. The Translator made it his Great Grandmother). He then takes things that didn't quite match up and puts a better script in play (The naked first years is another spot).

Another is at the end, you get a preview of the next disk (The closing's never reveal the next episode) and they show Yuna asking Kazuki to make her a woman! That's one of the best teasers I have ever seen (You need to see that episode to understand what she is asking for).

All in all, I would rather watch this in Japanese. (I watched it twice to make sure). But it's still funny in both English and Japanese and still is my favorite.

Ok I just watched the 2nd disk. This is a GREAT improvement over the first. They stabilized the VA's and they finally agree on how to pronounce Kazuki Shikimori. (Unfortunately Ka-Zi-Key Shi-Key-Mer-E won out). Nice little extra with the VA's on the 3rd episode audio. Something about changing Screenwriters though. I didn't quite get that. But now the disk is what I could consider Buy Quality.
[2006-02-08]
Disk 6 Watched - The Yuna crappy VA has struck again! What was one of the best 3 episode disks in the entire series is WRECKED by the tonal quality of the person playing Yuna (Can you believe this is Chiho-chan of Azumanga?) Yuna is the Cute, Kuriko is the Sexy, and Rin is the Formal. Here Yuna sounds like a some mother of 3 who just does VA work to get away from her kids. Her voice is strained and changes tonal quality throughout the entire disk. Bleh. And no extras on this disk but an extra long Preview. Someone tell the director to learn how to DIRECT!
Ok on to the disk review. This features the ONLY AMOUNT OF ECCHI in the whole damn series! I must've skipped this when it was on fansub because my eyes widened when the ecchi scene showed. For such a major fanservice vehicle, it has kept the ecchiness to zero up to this point.
This also brings in Evil Yuna and maybe the VA strained her voice trying to do Evil Yuna. Owells. On to Disk 7!

Just to add for Kbanger - Yuna of the Novel (Like Full Metal Panic Maburaho started as a novel) is the same as Yuna of Episode 19+. She is a jealous woman who doesn't want Rin or Kuriko anywhere near him (Though they are best of friends). I am postulating that the anime is hoping for an another 24 episode season (called Maburaho Colorful - Novel Only atm) and they wanted Yuna to approach the Yuna of the Manga and Novel. IMHO I liked Sweet Yuna more. But other changes such as Rin being Yuri is something I DON'T want in the Anime :)

This is a great anime of the harem style. As a whole I highly recommend it, however there were a few things that were to its detriment.
Rin and Kuriko both have great character development, but, wonder of wonders, the main female character, Yuna, seems to have REVERSE character development.
After 12 episodes, she seems so sweet, if not slightly jealous (which is normal for someone who is convinced she is married, even though it can't even legally be true, but oh well). You REALLY want Yuna and Kazuki to end up together,....but then for some reason the change happens.
Yuna loses all sweetness, and becomes a rediculously jealous child. I don't know who in their right minds would try to sabotage the best character of the anime...
If you get over that rediculous loss of character, the anime is still very entertaining, though a bit slow between eps 12-18. Also, I still can't figure out the ghost-maniac lady....
Try this one out for yourself, I can't guarantee you'll ike it, but even with the above comments in mind, I did.

Maburaho is a highly fanserviced series that gets off to a good start. The first twelve episodes are interesting and pretty good. Yuuna, Kazuki's self-proclaimed wife, gets jealous of Kuriko and Rin, but doesn't go overboard. Kazuki having his 8-spell limit before he's turned to ash made me wonder if the writers would dare to have Kazuki use all of his magic or not. Kazuki and Yuuna are such a sweet couple and by the end of 12 episodes, I just really wanted them to be together.

Then the writers threw a curve into the mix. They suddenly give Kazuki a condition which makes all of the girls reconsider their positions. Add to this mix a new woman and sensei at the high school who sees Kazuki as a unique item and wants him for her personal collection. While having the girls work together to protect Kazuki was fine, Yuuna's jealous nature goes to the extreme. It quickly got old and annoying. I don't know why they decided to make her this way, but I don't think it was the right way to go. The writers also add a 3rd love intrest to the mix. To be fair, she was introduced early in the series, but then she transfers. But they bring her back to add another complication to Kazuki's life.

While I appreciate the attempt on the writer's part to make sure to answer all unanswered questions (like why the landlady always wears mourning clothing), the answers seemed to be pulled out of the air at the last moment. They work, but still feel forced. It would have been more interesting to have learned things along the way.

Bottom line: Maburaho is a strange world. While I had an interesting time of things, I don't want to come back.
