Okko's Inn is a mix of slice-of-life and coming-of-age drama (with a smidge of supernatural elements) focused on a young girl named Okko who goes to live with her grandmother at a hot springs inn following the loss of her parents in a car accident. While learning to cope with her new surroundings, Okko encounters a couple ghosts present in the premises of the inn and is still recuperating from the loss of her parents. As a character piece film focused on Okko, the film does a great job exploring her character's developments as she settles into a junior innkeeper role at the resort with her grandmother and understanding what it means to work there, while also occasionally coping with anxiety from her parents' loss at a few points in the film. The drama coming from these developments is pretty low-key and doesn't get too overbearing with its emotional moments, allowing it to be quite relatable to its audience. The only real issue I have with Okko's Inn is that the spirits that Okko interacts with are not as memorable a presence in the film. While they have their humorous moments in their interactions with our female lead, they largely don't contribute much in the developments of Okko's character throughout the film. Beyond this gripe, Okko's Inn is pretty solid as a family film and character piece exploring Okko settling into her role as junior innkeeper and coping with the loss of her parents.
