Perhaps the best offering of the Full Metal Panic franchise to date, Invisible Victory continues where The Second Raid left off as the terrorist organization Amalgam chooses to go all-out in halting Mithril as a threat to their operations and apprehending Kaname Chidori for their own ends. Because of the more serious nature of Invisible Victory's plot compared to earlier installments in the FMP franchise, this leads its trademark comedy to be just about gone in this season of the series. With Amalgam making its present more felt in this season, this led Invisible Victory's plot to advance at a fairly breakneck pace and the anime shows the great lengths that Sousuke would go through to protect and, later, try rescuing Kaname from Amalgam with the developments in his character from earlier seasons from living as a civilian while guarding Kaname. The animation is also among the best quality for the FMP franchise to date as well with more cleaner visuals with scenery and character shots, fluid animation, and the mecha rendered in some slick-looking CG animation. The series is open-ended with Amalgam still at large and having some loose ends with storytelling. But beyond this minor issue, FMP: Invisible Victory still made for an enjoyable romp with the season's more serious storytelling and I hope there is a follow-up of this season down the line to give FMP a proper ending.

(One episode watched): The problem for me with FMP IV episode one was that I found that I had pretty much completely forgotten where things stood and the episode didn't provide much of a refresher. It has been 13 years since the last season of the series, after all (and I forget whether I watched even that one). Why is Chidori important? I don't know. What is at stake here? Which organization, Mithril or Amalgam, is good and which is evil? Again, I didn't know. About all I could remember was that the three main characters looked vaguely familiar. Being as unmoored as this, I couldn't get very excited by this episode; it just seemed like lots of James Bond-ish secret organizations and spying and high tech equipment, which felt slightly corny. I had expected that getting engaged with this sequel would be extremely easy but instead I find myself so detached from it that I wonder if there's any point in watching at all.
