Mermaid Forest basically tells a number of stories in Yuta's quest of discovering a means to become mortal again alongside his female companion, Mana. The stories range from retelling points in Yuta's past and encountering the worst aspects of humanity in the present thanks to the presence of mermaid flesh and how it can drive the least likely of people into becoming complete monsters. The quality of the stories tend to vary as some of them were grounded enough in their developments where I was genuinely shocked with seeing how seemingly kind people on the surface became corrupted thanks to the effects that mermaid flesh had on their lives and made these characters somewhat tragic with the problems that led to become as merciless and sadistic as they are with The End of the Dream, The Last Face and the disturbing Mermaid's Scar being my personal favorite stories of this series. On the other end though, there were stories with developments that crossed into melodramatic territory with how absurd and over-the-top I found their story aspects to be with Mermaid Forest and Promised Tomorrow being the weakest of the stories from this. The presentation to this series also has its quirks for me as the visuals are a bit on the rough side since it seems the series was trying to replicate the drawing style used by Rumiko Takahashi from Mermaid Forest's manga adaptation. The music proved to be the weakest aspect of the series for me as a number of insert songs didn't quite fit into the mood of some major scenes within the various stories told throughout Mermaid Forest's run and some further added to the annoying melodrama that I found with the show's weaker stories. I hear that there is an OAV adaptation to Mermaid's Scar that I would be tempted to check out at some point to see if it doesn't have the presentation flaws I found with Mermaid Forest's take on the story. Otherwise, this is a decent take on Rumiko Takahashi's well-known horror series which has both the strengths and flaws of her writing and drawing styles.

Drama : High Comedy : Low Action : Med SciFi : High Ecchi : Low From the lady who wrote Inuyasha. What a creepy set of episodes. Each episode looks into the human soul and sometimes the good comes out but most of the time the bad comes out. It's worth a rent and I couldn't wait to see it all but it finishes in the type Rumika Takashi style (Which means it doesn't) and it's not something I want to watch again. I have to admit that horror really isn't my "thing"; I watched this mostly because a friend wanted to see it. But it's pretty well done, with a strong mystery/suspense element.
