This OVA adaptation of the Masato story from Mermaid Saga is about on par with the adaptation I seen of it portrayed from the Mermaid Forest TV anime, minus the rough animated details of the TV anime, more subdued color tones and some slight tweaks to parts of the story. For fans of the series, this OVA is a decent adaptation of the story, though new fans will still be scratching their heads over Mana's character since both this and the older Mermaid Forest OVA didn't bother to explain much about her character and how she met up with Yuta. Otherwise, you could still see this and the later adaptation from the mentioned TV anime without fussing much about any differences, unless you're nit-picky for the slightest differences between both versions of the story.

TOTAL GRADE: 84% B MERMAIDS SCAR is a wonderful example of the range Rumiko Takahashii has as a write. Greatly unlike her other series such as RANMA ½, MAISON IKKOKU, and LUM, the MERMAID SAGA are tales of the macabre that can be not only very interesting but extremely disturbing. The premise is almost always dark as a tale unfolds that is capable of chilling your spine. Truly, MERMAIDS SCAR serves as one of the better examples of the series with its story as its not only a fan favorite but, in my opinion Takahashii-sans most interesting piece of writing I am privileged to read. If you like a tale with a twist and a little darker than most like their anime, this is a title not to be missed. Me personal recommendation is to obtain the three part graphic novel mangas of the series as best you can. These series is exemplary.
