After the death of his mother at the hands of the evil robot Count Mecha, young Tetsuro has become a delinquent street urchin who dreams only of revenge. Tetsuro lives in a far future world in which humans have the choice to travel to another planet where they can exchange their bodies for immortal, robotic counterparts. His goal is to someday acquire (through theft) enough money to board the Galaxy Express 999, a train which is capable of traveling through space, and which will take him to the planet of robots. One day, after escaping from the police, he meets the beautiful Maetel, who resembles his mother. She offers to take him on the Galaxy Express 999 to get a robotic body and to get revenge on Count Mecha. Along the journey, the two meet many varied people (including Captain Harlock and Queen Emeraldas), and Tetsuro learns what it means to be human.

This retelling of Galaxy Express 999 appears to be a compilated take of the major events that took place from the TV anime and it certainly shows with the movie's fast pacing and transitions through different events. Considering I've yet to personally sample the TV series (got the film since I though the 100+ episode length of the TV anime would be taxing on me), it looks like the anime revolves around Tetsuro's journey through different worlds leading him to know of the consequences that becoming a machine would occur with him if he went through with it to avenge his mother's death and that there is some mystery surrounding Maetel's origins that is explored. The buildup of these developments for this film are decently focused on, though the pacing of it does lead to moments of sloppy narration with jarring transitions and characters appearing without any buildup or foreshadowing. Fans of Captain Harlock and Queen Emeraldas will be giddy to know that the two make appearances at points in the movie. Beyond that, not much else to really say. Whether you see this movie, the TV anime or both will perhaps depend on how big a fan you are of Maetel's character or Leiji Matsumoto works in general.
