Following up on the first Galaxy Express 999 film, Adieu focuses on Tetsuro and Maetel reuniting once again to dispatch the latter's mother, Queen Andromeda, who is leading the Machine Empire again to unleash havoc on humanity. Unlike the first film, this one is an original work that isn't a compilation of the TV show's events. But that doesn't necessarily mean this sequel improves much for me as events in it still go by at a fast pace and there is little time to flesh out plot and characters, especially when the movie makes a big deal of the deaths of characters Tetsuro gets acquainted with at points in the film. Without any fleshing out of said characters, I was rather indifferent with the drama of those scenes. The visual quality is a slight improvement over the first movie as animated details looked smoother and human character designs looked rather normal instead of being out of proportion as you would find in many Matsumoto works. The animation has its moments of decent movement such as some fights that Tetsuro and other humans get into with machine forces, but still resorts to shortcuts on a number of occasions such as static panning shots, speed stripes and reused frames. Unless you are a big nut of old-school anime or Leiji Matsumoto works, I wouldn't bother watching this more than once.
