Oreimo's first season. But considering the show's improvements in some areas, it makes my impression of Oreimo's second season an improvement. By toning down on the obnoxiousness of Kirino and Kyosuke's characters and the eroge game focus, the series devotes more time to focus on interactions between the characters that can get humorous at points and even some fleshing out of their back stories. Some major developments happen in the title's second half in regards to romance involving Kyosuke and improvements in his relationship with Kirino. There are a couple episodes where the quality drops such as episode 4, but it isn't enough to completely cripple the improved quality of this season. Visuals are about on par with the quality of the first season and the soundtrack still features a wide range of J-Pop songs employed for the ED sequences of the series, though are still rather unmemorable for me. UPDATE: After completing the three special episodes, I guess I'll be downgrading a few of my ratings (originally had this a Buy and Series Story at 8) in light of the developments that occurred with Kyosuke and Kirino throughout their length. Got a wee bit too absurd to believably buy the decisions that the two siblings made and how they affected those aware of what was coming. Had a few moments that got me laughing, but otherwise a rather underwhelming conclusion to what had been an improvement over Oreimo's first season. The series is still worth watching, but be warned that the finale's not gonna be satisfying everyone. Last updated Sunday, August 18 2013. Created Saturday, June 29 2013. |

This sequel is much less episodic than the first season and makes full use of the lead characters and their relation. Just don't give up before episode 6, you'd miss a great development and a dramatic conflict. Sadly the final episodes ruined this show thoroughly. The second season is better than the first one, with the characters being established well enough and beginning to grow. The middle part with episodes 6-9 is the highlight of the franchise, this alone almost caused this sequel to get a "Buy" rating from me. Sadly the story goes downhill from there, including a weak episode 12 (due to some necessary arc from the novel not having been covered in the anime that would have explained an important character's change of attitude) and then the flashback episode at the worst position possible. Basically, Oreimo goes down the same path as Zero no Tsukaima, offering an interesting premise at first, then adding any number of harem girls instead of focusing on character development. Both stories feature a full-scale masochist as male lead.

I noticed that in the illustration above Kirino has a smile rather than a frown on her face, and thought that this might be a good sign. Unfortunately, while episode one brings us up to speed again about what the situation at the end of the original series was, otherwise it was painfully boring. Kyousuke's pathetic spinelessness and Kirino's obnoxious bitchiness seem to have been toned down a little; he no longer uselessly pleads with her to change her ways while acting as a punching bag, while her lack of courtesy is now of a non-violent sort. But this episode gives me no reason to think that much will be done with it. The characters' revised personalities seemed completely uninteresting, there were no new characters (I think), there was no sign of any new plot strands taking off, or any particular talent being involved in the making of this sequel. The jokes were largely replays of jokes from the first season (and not very funny ones). I had been hoping for a sequel that would correct the errors of the first season while keeping the strong points, but I fear that what has come about might be a dumbed-down, poor man's version of the original. Although I will watch at least one more episode, I wonder if Oreimo 2 as a whole will be worth watching at all. I started watching episode four, but before long Kirino slapped Kyousuke yet again for something that was in no way his fault, and (yet again) he ignored her insolence. A wave of weariness with this show swept over me, and I immediately turned the episode off and switched to another show--the inane Date A Live. Maybe if there are episodes which focus on, say, Kuroneko, I will watch those, but not the series as a whole. Last updated Friday, May 17 2013. Created Wednesday, April 03 2013. |
