Picking up where the Votoms TV anime left off, Shining Heresy probably offers up the best story for the franchise I've seen of the supplementary material for Votoms. Here, Chirico and Fyana are revived out of cryogenic sleep decades following the TV anime and Chirico is in a race of time to try finding Fyana before she fully revives, as she will otherwise die due to only having minutes left in her lifespan as a Perfect Soldier. Complicating things is that an influential religious order called Martial has gotten word of Chirico's revival and one of their cardinals send his cyborg daughter named Teitania to kill him in an attempt to usurp power over the order. The plot over Chirico's journey is an engaging one as 5 episodes is enough to tell its story at a fast enough pace without padding out the runtime and even has time to explore Teitania's character as she grows conflicted over confronting Chirico as she questions why he is avoiding conflict with her. Compared to 80s installments of the Votoms franchise, the visuals for Shining Heresy got quite the upgrade in polish and detail. Animation's still not as impressive at points as the OVA does cut some corners at points, but battle sequences with mecha are still engaging to see as Chirico advances further in his journey to find Fyana. Votoms fans should definitely give this OVA series a look.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2326#628]
(One episode watched):

This Votoms OVA series seem to be unique in that it is a postscript to the main series rather than a prequel. The distinctive music and style of the OP sequence left me with a grin on my face. Unfortunately, from there on I was unimpressed. The plot didn't make a lot of sense; apparently an immortal 'perfect soldier' would be a heresy against this religion, but it's unclear if they consider Chirico a God or a demon (or both?). So, they send some sort of super tough android chick to deal with him, and they fight it out. Also, what role the "contractors" played was unclear--that world implies that they have been hired by the government, but that didn't seem to be the case. The show seemed riddled with cliche bits, like Teitania beating the crap out of some punks to show off her strength, or emerging unscathed from an explosion and cloud of smoke which you would think would vaporize her. But I couldn't help feeling bored; I don't like characters who try too hard to impress me. Animation was both crude and neat in a strange way. Hopefully the additional episodes will be better.
