This movie version had a running time which was about half that of the OVA series, and a result felt a little rushed--almost like a summary of the original series. I was a little surprised that it didn't delete any arc altogether, it just cut each one down to size. There didn't seem to be any new animation, except perhaps for the opening scene. Since I had already seen the OVAs I can't say for certain how much sense this movie would make to a newcomer, but it was fun nevertheless, and seemed to do an OK job of telling the story. Indeed, I caught some important things which I had missed during the OVAs. The concept of an Abnormal Survivor still doesn't make complete sense to me; how does a strange gene allow them to "alter our environments and physical laws to an extent"? How does somebody become an artificial AS, or an 'approximate' one? It might have been best to leave the concept of the AS a mystery rather than assemble a hodgepodge of pseudo-scientific explanations. Anyway, the conclusion had a nasty, anti-heroic taste to it--the kind I like. In all, I would say watching the OVAs is preferable, since their quality was high and they were nicely paced. A lot has been sacrificed to convert them into a movie, but if this is the only version of Pailsen Files available to you, then by all means watch it.
