Taku Morisaki is a 2nd year high school student in Koshi. His grades are failing and he is working part time at a restaurant to help pay for his school trip to Hawaii. The reason for his poor grades is in his last year of junior high his school decided that since the academic average is below the public high school, all of the jr high students shall be penalized and no one will be able to visit Kanto. Him and another student Yutaka Matsuno protested this breach of policy but the teachers just blew them off as stupid students who know why they weren't going to go (BTW Taku and Yutaka were top students on the council). Taku fell down to #93 while Yutaka stayed a top student. One day a new transferee showed up, Rikako Mutou. Beautiful, smart, and talented, Rikako was the envy of the girls and admired by the guys, in fact, Yutaka told Taku that he is going to 'go' for her. But Taku also has feelings for this girl and has to supress them because of his best friend.

As the next year goes on, Taku keeps finding himself in situations with Rikako but because of his loyalty he treats her badly. What will happen later? How will this be resolved.

From Studio Ghibli and the director of Koko wa Greenwood

By reading the synopsis, it seemed interesting. I had a mix feeling and just on a whim decided to give it a shot.

Art, Animation & Character Designs
The artwork wasn't bad at all. It seemed a bit below the average for today's standards, but I'm going to overlook that since it is a '93 production. So based from that period, it's about on par with others. It can be said the same for the animation. Character designs were suprisingly good. They were well done.

Music
The soundtrack definitely has a 90's feel to it. There was some flutes, pianos and other wind instruments. Nothing really worth noting.

Series and Episode Story
Hmmm, it wasn't too bad. A basic story of a love triangle amongst friends. Things go softly and not really dramatic. It was a light entertainment and narrowly kept my interest.

Overall, it was somewhat enjoyable but don't expect a lot here. Move on if you want more.

A love triangle developed through the perspective of a young man's flashbacks of his high school days was mildly interesting to check out. I would assume this movie was Ghibli's attempts to appeal to young adults with nostalgia of their high school days. While the attempt is decent and admirable, I can't find myself enjoying it as it lacks the charm of Ghibli's coming-of-age movies like Kiki's Delivery Service and Whisper of the Heart. It's a good effort from Ghibli, but I'm more interested in their coming-of-age, fantasy, and moral awareness works.

Ah - this entry reminds me of another review to be written. I liked this anime, for me it was a high "Rent", then again I had extreme problems to pin down why I liked it (which explains why I didn't write a review so far)...

Nice little fable. I liked all the Miyazaki looks of everything. The story was a bit rushed and a few 'japanese' assumptions must be made (Like Taku likes Rikako) but once you get past it, it's a lovely little story.

Not as good as Whisper of the Heart but decent.
