One sunny afternoon day, as the spacey Nao is doing what she enjoys doing most, taking photographs of clouds on the roof of their middle school, she encounters a cat, a FLYING CAT! In chasing after the cat, she manages to fall of the roof and is saved by a strange gust of strong wind, which slowed her fall and saved her from injury. She comes to learn that one of her teachers is a ‘ wind handler’, and it was he who taught the cat to control the winds so as to be able to fly through the air. During the summer break, Nao, her best friend Miki and a cute fellow student, Jun, all head out to their teachers little village in countryside to learn more about the secrets of controlling the wind. They arrive at a time when the mysterious Wind Festival is about to begin.

Windy Tales mixes around elements of slice-of-life, fantasy and coming-of-age storytelling to explore a group of middle school students living their everyday lives while gaining the unique ability to manipulate wind. One of the teachers at the school teaches the children how to control and responsibly use their wind manipulation, while each girl undergo differing experiences with the ability and life in middle school such as activities with their photography club, summer vacation and first love. The wind manipulation aspect to the series adds some uniqueness to the series as the girls, their teacher and even a bunch of cats gain use of the ability to allow themselves to float and fly in the air that make for the animation highlight of the series. The rather abstract animation style with scenery and character designs allows the series to stick out from most anime titles as it gives them more realistic details and proportions, though the angular style of the designs looks a bit rough and won't appeal to all anime fans. The series won't be for everyone considering its slice-of-life storytelling. But if you are a fan of the genre and want something different to see besides slice-of-life school comedies, Windy Tales is a unique offering that could be worth checking out.

With an animation style that is a bit off and artistically quirky, this a very fun story of a group of middle school students who get caught up in a special story of magic and adventure. This is something for all ages, as a quiet and subtle coming-of-age story that is certain to bring forth a smile with its simple charm.

Currently being fan-subbed by several groups.
