Three years ago a massive alien mothership appeared and took position above Japan. The trigger-happy Americans launched a nuclear weapon at it, and scored a direct hit, but the only effect was collateral damage and low level irradiation of Tokyo. Since then the ship has done nothing but hover above the city and the people have become used to it. Friends Kadode Koyama and Ouran 'Ontan' Nakagawa carry on about their high school life. But as they grow up, they face existential questions, learning adulthood’s complexities and that the true threat may not be from above.

Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction

Not what I was expecting! Based on the title alone, I was sure that this would be an action-comedy about heroes or superheroes fighting demons, and as a result put off watching it for several months. But 5xD is in fact a very original and thought provoking show. The character designs are very distinctive, kind of like charicatures, and I thought at first that they might not integrate well with the detailed artwork but that did not turn out to be a problem. A lot of effort has definitely been put into this show. It debuted in late May for some reason and has been made by a previously unknown animation company with mostly unknown VAs. These disillusioned, apathetic, pessimistic girls get on with their lives and the ANN synopsis suggested that this show will be more about them coming of age than about the alien threat. I'm not sure what to make of it, but I'm sure I should keep watching for now. It turns out there is an 'episode 0' that might make it easier to understand what's going on. This show is looking neat enough that I think I will compile a review of each individual episode.
