After she first sees a UFO in elementary school, Ontan tells her brother Hiroshi (who was then slim and athletic) about it and her fears that the aliens may be planning to attack Earth. She begs him to protect her and Earth itself since he's a 'genius'. He says that there are things even a genius can't do, and sometimes a person must concentrate on protecting just one person. One night Ontan and Kadode see the speherical UFO again and go out in the dark to investigate. They find a group of children have captured a small alien in a protective suit and are tormenting it. Kadode convinces them that this is actually a human child wearing a suit that protects him/her from allergens. Kadode and Ontan take custody of the alien. Kadode says she feels they were 'meant' to meet it, and the two promise to keep this a secret between them. They take it to Ontan's house where it speaks to them, thanking them for saving its life. It says that what the aliens are up to could be interpreted as anything from an invasion to a study of human happiness. The alien says it has come alone as an 'investigator' and will decide whether any more aliens come to Earth. The alien ship has been damaged and for now it needs somewhere to hide while it repairs itself. Kadode proposes that it remain at Ontan's place and provides it a costume as a disguise--'Isobeyan', the silly yellow creature with a red mushroom hat. Away from the alien, Kadode tells Ontan that the two of them must convince the alien that humans can be peaceful and persuade it to return home without summoning an invasion of Earth. They are rapidly becoming best friends but Ontan is being harassed by her classmates who don't like Kadode. The alien gives Ontan a 'nerve stimulant' pill which it says can suppress fear and invigorate a person; Ontan pockets it for now. When the other girls demand that Ontan date one of the boys as punishment for speaking with Kadode, Kadode loses her temper and goes berserk, using the invisibility cape that the alien gave them to ambush the boys. The boys, surprisingly, conclude that she is awesome and want to be her servants. She demands that they do good deeds every day and uses their behavior to argue with the alien that humans can be good after all. The alien loans Kadode and Ontan tiny helicopter-like devices that allow them to fly.
