Mostly feel indifferent on this one. I will at least give Nuku Nuku credit in that it does make a unique comedy anime in its focus on a scientist giving life to an android by implanting the brain of a dying cat into it to create our titular character Nuku Nuku. The comedy mainly stems from Nuku Nuku's antics, Akiko's overprotective tendencies as a mother and Eimi's attempts to cause trouble for Nuku Nuku; all of which milked in an over-the-top and slapstick style. However, I wasn't really getting into the humor of the series and the characters were a bit too paper-thin for me to get attached to. Maybe if you're a comedy anime fan, this will grab your interest. But for me, I don't think I'm returning to this one nor snagging any later installments of the series for it.

My favorite line: "She's as cold blooded as a snake and riding an express train to Hell!"--Kyusaku, speaking about Akiko *Having seen a good deal more anime since I originally wrote this, I can't help noticing how often parodies of this painting show up in anime--the Japanese must be fascinated by it! 8/03.............................................................................................................#5 Last updated Friday, August 04 2006. Although I wouldn't describe it as hilariously funny, this series has a certain charm to it that keeps you smiling throughout. The first episode was my favorite--somehow I can't help liking Kyouko and Arisa. The series' humor could be surprisingly sophisticated at times, for example the joke based on the famous painting, "The Scream".* The last episode was kinda far-out, as the action extends into outer space. But I loved the wildly distorted view of the enraged Akiko as she screams--sort of ultra Super Deformity. I wonder why they only used the frenetic, delightful opening theme "Happy Birthday To Me" in two episodes (get it on CD and it plays for four minutes!).||||||||

This is a sweet and cute little OAV series which is hard to dislike. It is nothing special, but it is a nice series to kill time with and relax. Nuku Nuku is likeable right from her introduction as she wakes up Ryu-chan for school. As an android who's shaped like a high school girl, Nuku Nuku's naivety helps her out the series since it never really takes itself seriously. The whole cat-brained thing is just to give the character a unique aspect but doesnt play a heavy role in the series. Nuku Nuku doesnt really act like a cat for the most part. Episode 5 has her being the most cat-like, but she mostly acts like a sweet, pretty human girl. The stories are mostly episodic in nature with continuity threads woven throughout to make the series more enjoyable. The stories are somewhat similar in that Arisa and Kyouko are almost always out to destroy Nuku Nuku and get Akikos son. Sometimes this is at her behest and sometimes it is against her wishes. They always fail in their mission and with each failure, the duo slip a little closer to falling off the edge of sanity. The cast of characters are mainly just silly and played over-the-top. Only Yoshimi, Ryunosukes female friend of the same age, is truly normal. Ryunosuke is fairly normal, but the other characters are over the top, though they do change to a degree. Akiko started off as a stereotypical power-mad woman, but after the second episode, we start to see the elements of her which make her more human. She truly loves her son and even was willing to become a perfect housewife for a month to prove her love. So that was a nice move on the part of the series creators. The DVD contains all six episodes which is a good move on ADVs part. The subtitles are from 1996 so honorifics are ignored or given forced translations. I was surprised that they left in Papa-san and Mama-san in both the English dub and the subtitles though. Bottom line: Silly, cute, sometimes funny, visually appealing, and a fun way to waste some time. Last updated Thursday, August 07 2003. Created Monday, August 04 2003. |
