When she was young, Hotaru was once lost when she played in the forest near her uncle's place that she visits every summer. There, she had a fateful encounter with a spirit, who helped her even though he would disappear if a human being touches him. Quite the beautiful and heartwarming film, Hotarubi no Mori e focuses on our female lead Hotaru recalling the times she spent with a spirit named Gin from childhood into adolescence. The movie reminded me of Natsume's Book of Friends in a number of ways with its calm and serene mood, the interactions with spirits, its beautifully-drawn scenery and the bittersweet finale to the movie. There's enough fleshing out of Gin and Hotaru's characters where you know of the types of people they are and where you can believably buy the bond that the two establish together over the many summers they meet, which makes the mentioned bittersweet finale all the more powerful. Definitely try watching this film at some point as it makes for a nicely-told and emotional 45 minute movie.
