Baka and Test attempts to be a comedy poking fun of the misfortune of others through the class ranking system that Fumizuki Academy employs and the dismal conditions of Class F leading its class to challenge the higher ranked classes in virtual games. However, the series suffers heavily in the fact that it relishes too much in seeing the students of Class F go through misfortune and the series dabbling too heavily in character tropes overexposed for the umpteenth time within anime such as moeblob and trap characters. Even the virtual game the series pushes is not too engaging since it doesn't seem to have a defined set of rules beyond the show's creators pulling whatever out of their rear end in an attempt for cheap laughs at the expense of any Class F students. Unless you don't mind having your brain cells rot, Baka and Test is one anime comedy you shouldn't waste your time on.

Very funny. Sadly the episodes took a bit of a dip in the middle and couldn't always hold my interest. I would've liked a couple more actual ESBs, but whatever. The ending was a bit meh but I hear there may be a second season so I guess it isn't the 'ending'-ending anyway.

Unevaluated Stretch [series:2251#628]
(Eight episode watched):

When the word "summoning" first came up, my response was 'Oh crap, not another magic academy show!'. But it turned out that this was more of a parody of such shows, since what's "summoned" are ridiculous chibi versions of the magician so that they can fight in videogame-like duels. That seemed sort of fun, and I didn't detect any blatant fanservice. The question was, would it continue to deliver fresh ideas in the succeeding episodes, or had we already seen pretty much everything original which it had to offer? Five episodes in, my impression was of a show which is good for a number of laughs, but has an episodic plotline and didn't remain in my memory for long. Most of the characters were still pretty much blank faces to me. I doubted if there would be much of an ongoing story here. It's a modestly funny show, but the jokes aim for the lowest tier of sophistication; things like a guy getting repeatedly poked in the eyes, and stuff like that. At the end of episode seven (I think) I got a brief glimpse of true quality when the weird stalker girl shows signs of having a heart; but this was the exception rather than the rule. The laughs I got were barely enough to justify the time spent on an average episode. There didn't really seem to be much character development going on, indeed I doubt if any was being attempted at all. Since the jokes could be better, some sort of interesting longterm story would be nice, but I wasn't holding my breath. Come to think of it, not a whole lot was being done with the chibi summoned characters. They generally show up briefly once in an episode, and don't do much which we haven't seen before. They cannot talk, apparently, they just fight, and it seemed that this novel element was going largely unexploited. Instead what we get is basically another school comedy. I ultimately decided to quit this show.

This is something special! Refreshing, fun and humorous.

Baka test is about a school where grades are everything: the better grades you have, the better facilities you enjoy. If your class thinks they can best a higher ranked class, they can declare war, summon creatures and through examination summoning battles (ESB), try to butcher one another's creatures. We follow the story of F class, the worst in the school, as they try to prove that grades do not measure one's worth. The thing is, they are really quite dumb.

Most of the time, we have the bunch of idiots fooling around doing generally idiotic things. Yet they (mainly Yuuji) can show incredible tactical planning during the wars with other classes. So Baka test can have its cool moments, though it is generally a lolz show. It is low on predictability as well, which is always a good thing to be.

There isn't much of a story really, but by the end, most main character leaves a strong impression on me, and I cannot help but to have lots of fun with them. Together with a nice op and a fun ed, this is one gem of this season.

Analysis : All Fansubs watched. And I want the R1!

Ok first off this show is the Absolute favorite for Winter 2010. Nothing came close to it.
On to the review

Ok this thing has no plot. It's all about the stereotype anime characters, put all of them together into one basket and see how it turns out. But it works! I love watching every episode just to see what kind of antics they all get into. I laugh, and I laugh and I laugh. I see how they deal with War, Love, and Academic cheating. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose, and sometimes they have to eat Himenji's cooking. Hahaha.

If you came for a insightful plot with memorable characters? Well go watch Durarara, this has none of those. It's like watching Gilligan's Island. It's there for the laughs.

Since this is R1, it ALSO beats Maburaho. Wow, 2 shows that beat my favorite since 2002

Heres a list of the baka cast :
  • Akihisa - Our DUMB hero. He only lives to protect Himenji. But he can't believe that she loves him (he thinks she loves his best friend).
  • Mizuki Himenji - MOE-BLOB - Super Smart girl who can't cook. (In fact it's DEATH!). Loves Aki. Calls him Akihisa at the end (You know Japanese don't use first names normally)
  • Shimada - TSUDERE - She's in love with Aki too but looks like a guy. Good in Math
  • Mussolini (Voyeur in the subs) - PEEPING TOM - Always trying to get a picture of a girls panties or bra. Good in Health
  • Hideyoshi - TRAP - A boy who looks like a girl but is really pissed about why people confuse his gender. There are 3 genders, Male, Female, and Hideyoshi.
  • Yujii - LAZY - Class president of Class F, child prodigy who doesn't give a damn. Very afraid of Shouku.
  • Shouku - TOP STUDENT - Class president of Class A and MAY be smarter than Himenji. VERY in love with Yujii, and very JEALOUS of any girl he looks at, to the point where she tazes him (yes you read that).
  • Hazuki - LOLI - Sister of Shimada and Aki's fiancee (We don't know why)
  • Mizuki - YURI - Lebsian who lusts after Shimada.
  • Akira - INCEST - Aki's sister who has a BroCon complex.
It's a KEEPER!

I don't know why but the description somehow reminds me of ↗Tamagotchi pets. Well, all of the 'summoned creatures' appear as chibi dolls, and here are the summoning rules.
