Wicked City is another 80s ultra-violent anime film with a nice mix of rape and consensual sex tossed into the crap blender. The anime barely has much of a coherent plot in its focus on two agents trying to protect a diplomat from a gang of rogue demons, with Taki being your stone-faced womanizer, Makie largely seeming to exist to be the sex object of the film being raped or having consensual sex, and the diplomat being your typical anime perverted old man. The focus on relations between humans and demons is mostly window dressing for Taki and Makie's conflict with the demon gang and the gory ways that the two kill the various members off. The visuals are quite nice to see for a late-80s anime with grotesque demon designs, dark settings that do well to present a creepy and surreal mood, and decent animation. However, presentation isn't quite enough to make up for the many issues that Wicked City has for content and storytelling. Unless you get enjoyment out of late-80s ultra-violent anime, Wicked City is otherwise skippable.

On a side note, I've been wanting to review this title since day one. Despite all the negative reviews, I (like I always try to do) will give it a fair and honest review. I also believe it's not fair to anyone who reads a one-sided review based on personal preference. This is like any other anime and deserves a better or at least a fair review in my opinion. Enough of that, time for my review of one of my top anime titles, Wicked City. The protagonist of the story, Taki Renzaburo, is part of a secret organization called the Black Guard. His job is to help maintain balance between two worlds, the human world and black world (demon). His new assignment is to protect a special VIP who is supposed to rush in a new era between both worlds by renewing a treaty that was created for the intent of maintaining peace between the worlds. He's not alone in this assignment as he is partnered up with a elegant but deadly agent, Makie. The catch is that she's from the black world. There's a extremist militant group of black world terrorists who will stop at nothing to see this treaty and the peace between both worlds destroyed. Both Taki and Makie's mission is to protect this VIP and make sure that this person safely makes it to the treaty signing. Wicked City is one of those rare works produced from the defunct Streamline Pictures (one of my favorite companies). What stood out for me was the story itself. You have this agent from the Black Guard who is their best and his partner who's not only hot, has a cover job as a model, but is also a deadly woman from the black world. Add that with a seriously perverted old man and a bunch of extreme terrorists from the black world and you have got a good action packed story. Sure, the anime has a lot of hentai elements and can stray off course a bit, but IMHO it's necessary to have it. Otherwise, the anime alone wouldn't be as memorable as I would have seen it. Although the story was good, it was very simple to the point where it was nearly painfully linear. You can watch about half of it and predict what will happen at the end without watching the rest. It is an old OVA so for me it's forgivable for the most part. Character design was close to flawless. I've seen a lot of anime to appreciate how much effort was put into the characters. The animation was not overly exaggerated with a few exceptions and was absolutely enjoyable. Art wise it was kind of lacking since the theme was just mostly nighttime and the events took place within that period. I literally bought OVA out of sheer curiosity. I watched it and said to myself, "Is this really anime?". Years ago, anime was really tame and kid friendly since it was on network television. I thought all animation (either japanese or american) had to follow suit and not have any material such as cursing, nudity, or even graphic sex scenes. I was shocked to see the first ten minutes of this movie. Growing up, I learned along the way that a lot of anime did not follow what Walt Disney did and that it could be as entertaining as some real life movies. In fact, there's a lot of things is this anime that you probably couldn't get away with in an average box office movie back then. Now in the present, movies push the limits of what can be risque. So why not anime? Overall, this is a rare anime that was ahead of it's time back in the 80's and stands out to be a classic amongst a lot of anime I have seen now and then. It may not compare to some drama driven classics but stands alone in my collection as one of the best I have seen. Give it a fair watch and you'll see what I mean. Last updated Friday, April 13 2012. Wicked City should be placed in the Adult Anime section. It's basically porn with a plot, not a very good plot, but at least an attempt at one. I think this came out in the early 90's, but the animation looks really old. The music ain't so great either, but the Japanese singer's English is pretty good, unlike Puffy AmiYumi's. Wicked City carries the ridiculous Adult Manga concept that after a woman is gang raped, by hideous demons at that, she can simply be nonchalant and ready to have sex immediately afterwards. Not only that, but Makie enjoyed being gang raped...that just makes no sense. This movie also features forced tentacle oral sex, a vagina with razor sharp teeth, and an old man getting sucked into a demon prostitute's breasts. I'll admit I couldn't stop laughing during that scene though. That was exactly what Giuseppi deserved. I was grossed out by Wicked City, and I imagine guys of both sexual preferences would cringe in fear and disgust at the sight of a carnivorous vagina. There's also this gross scene that involves a giant, gaping, wrinkled, squirting vagina. According to a female character in Wicked City, the sight of such a thing was irresistible to all men. For a movie not even 1 hour and 30 minutes long, the writer sure managed to cram a bunch of senseless sexual content into it. Like Midnighter said, unless you like crap that involves gang rapes, tentacle oral sex, and wrinkled ass vaginas, avoid this crap at all costs. This movie is for the horny, chronic masturbating kind of people. Very bad story about someone who his partner has sex with every person she looks at (no exception for race,kind,physical condition or sex). Boring.Disgusting.Sick. Not worth $5. Watch something else like Pochacco or some Blue's Clues,its way better than this.

TOTAL GRADE: 58% F The only reason I think this movie deserves acknowledgement at all is its status as a cult classic and the fact its somewhat a pioneer in the occult horror genre, otherwise its a prime example of how much an anime can have wrong with it. The animation and music are pretty decent for the times but anyone who tries to pass it off as anything but a porn with gore is either lying to you or fooling themselves. My gripes include (but are not limited to): 1. Back story, who needs it? WICKED CITY sure doesnt. 2. A perverted old master (oh thats novel) 3. Hmmwe captured the female character again what should we do? Oh I know, rape the hell out of her! More or less WICKED CITY is like a porn, they pretend to have this grand plot but everything sooner or later leads to sex (consensual or otherwise). Granted, if youre into the hentai scene then you could do far worse that this title since it does pass for a little bit of interesting material, but WICKED CITY seems to play more to the horn-dog fan boy than any other audience. After the first time I saw this movie, I raved. For me, that's what anime waws all about...the action and the risque sexual references wrapped around a great story. That was a year ago. After seeing it recently, I was embarassed to have it in my collection. What I once thought was daring and "risque" turned out to be nothing but filth, pure and simple. What I'd imagined to be a great storyline turned out to be appallingly convoluted and gut-wrenchingly cheesy. The characters aren't belevable, or even likable. Taki in particular is a horrible person, full of testosterone-fueled misogynist rantings and led by the almighty desires to shoot stuff and get laid. Despite the fact that I've grown to despise this film, I still give it good marks for some of the excellent animation and effects, as well as some very cool monster designs. The plot is laid out well, despite the fact that the story is uninteresting and reeks like a thirteen year old boy's sheets after a wet dream. Speaking of which, the waste of time is laden with moments of absolutely gratuitous perversion and filth. It is apparent to me that the producers of this tripe wanted to make a hentai without crossing the line into explicit pornographic content. Their solution...well places shadows and suggestively shaped tentacles to keep it from being a porn, but they still managed to fit in lots of sex and oversized mammaries to satisfy the masses. Think of a cheesy B-movie, add gratuitous violence, nudity, and a "horny Yoda" and you get Wicked City, a barely watchable mess of an anime. The story was little more than an excuse to splatter creatures all over walls and get the female lead out of her clothes on a regular basis. Chauvanist crap like this may appeal to drunken frat-boys, but not to anyone with taste. Even the art and character designs were lousy. Why are the characters blue-colored thru out half the film? At least the animation itself was fairly impressive. This was a thourough disappointment, after hearing it bragged up by numerous people.
