You can more or less think of this as a bonus treat for fans of Mahoromatic. This OVA is set during the second TV series and focuses on Suguru, Mahoro, and Suguru's classmates preparing a maid cafe for their city's anniversary, with a side-plot where Mahoro and Minawa get in a skirmish with Management. The visuals have a bit more polish to them compared to the TV anime, though the animation is nothing spectacular. Pretty much, this OVA would only be worth watching if you're a Mahoromatic fan.

(Both episodes watched): One of the first things I noticed about Tadaima Okaeri was that it sported excellent artwork which was indistinguishable from that of the original series. Perhaps the second thing I noticed was that I couldn't remember the name of the once-famous studio which had produced the original Mahoromatic, not to mention Evangelion, etc (Gainax). It has been so long since Gainax turned out a truly exceptional work that I had virtually forgotten about it, and no longer felt much confidence that a new Gainax project would be of high quality. That, unfortunately, turned out to be a realistic attitude given the quality of this show. There was lots of silly slapstick--Minawa seems incapable of taking more than a few steps without tripping and falling, even though she is extremely agile during combat. But the humor seems to be largely repeats of jokes from the original series--like what's-her-name freaking out as she tastes delicious food--without much fresh wit. When the girls visited a public bath the thought immediately came to mind that surely Shikijo-sensei would scoff at Mahoro's flat chest; and sure enough she did. It just seemed like old jokes, slightly altered but by no means original, were being replayed instead of much fresh humor. The episode gets serious at the end as Minawa is ambushed by enemy robots, but it was hard to feel excited or anxious. One problem is that since this is basically a two-part filler episode, we all know that it can't significantly alter the outcome of the story, and therefore neither Mahoro nor Minawa are in any particular danger. The original TV series is a favorite of mine, but this special seemed disappointing. If this is the way it is going to be, it might have been best not to produce this special at all, since it seems to blemish the quality of the original series. The fight scene at the beginning of episode two was pretty cool; using every possible excuse to disrobe Mahoro less so. Part two had a little bit of a fresh story, although not particularly novel or interesting. In general, Tadaima Okaeri seemed very average; not flagrantly screwed up, but lacking much of anything exceptional or memorable either. Nothing but the artwork matched the quality of the two original TV series, which rendered it a disappointment. Perhaps it's significant that the nearest it came to being emotionally moving was when it replayed yet another old bit--us being reminded that Mahoro doesn't have long to go.
