After enjoying Hajime no Ippo last year, I decided to give this series a whirl. The series has the same old elements from the original series featuring the rigorous training of the boxers, perspectives from both sides during a match and the display of fatigue and injuries as boxing matches wear on. Unfortunately, I must say that I found this season to be quite inferior to the original series. The opponents Miyata and Date faced felt like your cliched stereotypes of different nationalities right down to the outback hat worn by Miyata's Australian opponent. Unlike the first season which did decent at exploring the backgrounds of Ippo's opponents, there's not much in the way of depth given to these two characters. In addition, the outcome to Date's fight left a sour taste in my mouth with what takes place. And once I seen how things were gonna be in the 10th episode with Ippo and his opponent (especially of the true objective the guy has), I decided that I finally had enough. The character designs, while sporting better quality artwork, are still as ugly as ever, especially in the case of the female characters. And for a 26 episode series, the series still relies on reused animation frames and speed lines to simulate its fights. While I found this forgivable with the first season with the large number of episodes the series had, this season being at 26 episodes could have made better use of its animation budget for the fights. After 10 episodes, I've chosen to drop this series without giving it a final review.

Returning for his second coming of the series, the mongoloid boxer Ippo makes his reapperance in this second series, Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger. This time around, Ippo is the current Featherweight Boxing Champion of Japan and his goal now is to fight his long time rival and friend, Ichiro Miyata. I did watch 2 episodes and I'm still saying that the characters look like the got hit with the ugly stick a few million times over. However, the same old story begins where the last OVA ended. It's definitely on my radar of current shows to be paying attention to.
