Yumi is a first year student at the Lillian School For Girls, an exclusive all girl's catholic school. The school has a tradition that older girls take a younger girl as their little sister or "soeur" in order to instruct and look out for them. Though Yumi admires Sachiko, a reserved second year student who is a member of the student council, she has no hopes of being chosen as her soeur. When an innocent encounter leads Sachiko to impulsively ask Yumi to be her soeur, Yumi is suddenly brought into the inner circle of the Roses, who are the members of the student council. With Sachiko at her side, Yumi begins to unravel and understand the relationships between the Roses and their soeurs and figure out her own feelings for Sachiko.

The Pros: Maria-sama ga Miteru is an anime dubbed to be "pure shoujo" due to its emphasis on the purity of relationships between female characters. Add to this aspect an elegant setting a la Revolutionary Girl Utena and this is an anime guaranteed to garner attention from shoujo fans who want a break from the heaping load of romance and comedy titles that have plagued recent shoujo anime. MariMite's storyline is mostly focused on the development of character relationships, especially the soeur relationships of the Yamiyurikai. The show devotes each episode to exploring certain aspects of a soeur pairing. Each of the characters have a believable personality that viewers can instantly recognize thanks to the quirks of that one character's personality, such as the bashfulness of Yumi or Sei's laidback and teasing attitude. As discussed, MariMite is 'pure shoujo' because it has no story elements that hinder the exploration and development of character personalities and developments. There is no melodrama, no romantic developments, no over-the-top comedic gags, and no fantasy in MariMite. In terms of animation, MariMite features some crisp scenery and a decent amount of detail put into the elegant scenery of the Lilian High School, especially with the school's signature Virgin Mary statue. The character designs have a bishoujo quality to them as their designs match up quite well to their personalities.

The Cons: MariMite is an anime series that will not appeal to all anime fans. With a large emphasis on character relationships, the series has very little in terms of action or emotional intensity in its storyline which won't please fans of anime wanting something more thrilling or with a greater focus on plot or comedic gags. This anime also contains some shoujo-ai undertones which combined with the Catholic school setting of the series could offend religious viewers.

Facts on the Series:

-Based on an ongoing light novel series written by Oyuki Kanno, who has been writing the series since 1998.

-This anime has a strong fanbase with shoujo-ai and yuri fans due to the implications behind the soeur relationships and has resulted in dojinshi, fanfictions, and elaborations by fans to try making the sexuality behind these relationships more blatant.
