Notables:
There was a time on a peaceful land where people and supernatural creatures can coexist in harmony. However, because of a calamity, these supernatural creatures began to run wild and wreak havoc. The reason behind the accident is actually caused by the revival process of a large mystical creature, King of Bull (Gyumaou).

The Heaven (Tenkai) which looked at the grieve situation summons a high rank monk (Genjou Sanzo) and assigns him to go to the west to stop the revival process of Gyumaou. The Heaven also assigns Son Goku, Sha Gojyo, and Cho Hakkai to join Genjou Sanzo to assist his mission.

The second installment of Saiyuki anime is also based on a well known story in China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan about a real journey of one Buddhist monk (AD 629) who travelled from China to India.

This series was mildly entertaining and left me wanting to watch another round of Slayers somehow.

Art, Animation & Character Designs
For the most part, the artwork is bland and lacking any real details. But considering this series is nearly a decade old (at the time of this review), i'll give it some forgiveness. Character designs were equally as unimpressive but getting over it was an ease. It sorta reminded me of Slayers.

Music
The OP is a pretty cool hard rock piece with male vocals... slightly leaning to the rap side. Think "Limp Bizkit". This was a nice welcome as it's a stray from the norm. Throughout the series, you have plenty of sax and similar instruments. During battle scenes, you get some interesting, subtle heavy metal pieces with an emphasis on symbols and bass guitar. Not too shabby really. The ED was an interesting rock piece with male vocals. Wasn't too bad.

Series and Episode Story
I didn't come to liking this until about 3 or 4 episodes in. I think it was the combination of artwork, unusual settings and slightly boring characters.

Here's a few issues I had with this series...
1. I totally disliked the whole "gun" thing in the middle of swords, staffs and magic. Somehow it just didn't fit. Then all of a sudden you have a jeep. Yes, a "jeep". With that said, I had a tough time figuring out where in time this series takes place... or simply in an alternate reality or something.
2. I was pretty much lost throughout the series. Nothing much was really revealed and it ended with nothing resolved.... nor did they make it to India. However, it wasn't until I completed the series that I looked back and discovered that this is actually the 2nd installment. so I suppose I need to go back and watch that one to fill in any details I'm lacking.

Overall, this series was mildly interesting. I might have a better opinion of it had I watched the first installment first. However, first impression is what I'm going by and first impression tells me... "eh".
