The Pros: Tsuiokuhen is the prequel to the Rurouni Kenshin TV series that explores several of the major events in Kenshin’s life that shape him to be the peace-loving swordsman who swore never to kill by the sword again. Unlike the TV series, Tsuiokuhen features none of the slapstick violence or comedic gags that were on the show. The storyline here is darker and has a rougher edge to it than the TV series. The OAV shows several aspects of Kenshin’s life which shape how he is when he later meets Kaoru and the others in the TV series such as his cross-shaped scar, his first lover, and learning the sword style of Hiten Mitsurugi. The intense violence in this OAV is symbolic to the bloody struggle between the Tokugawa shogunate trying to preserve their way of life and the Meiji rebels who are trying to bring a new age to Japan. This gives the OAV a large amount of realism, especially considering Kenshin’s character development from an emotionless assassin to a young man softened by escaping the bloodshed he created. This realism also went into the animation to the OAV as well. Action sequences are fluid and realistically detailed giving them a slick feel for action anime fans to be amazed over. The soundtrack has powerful, dramatic musical pieces, which flow well with the intensity of the OAV’s dramatic plot.

The Cons: The only problem that could be said about Tsuiokuhen is that some of the battle scenes can be excessive to the amount of blood loss coming from slain characters. Otherwise, there is nothing else to worry about with this OAV.

Facts on the Series:

-Based on a storyline from the Rurouni Kenshin manga series created by Nobuhiro Watsuki. The manga is licensed in America by Shonen Jump’s U.S. publications.

-A prequel to the Rurouni Kenshin TV series. A later Rurouni Kenshin OAV series, Seishounen, was made in 2002 receiving mixed criticisms from anime fans and critics.

The only thing that keeps me from giving Tsuiokuhen tens across the board is that I really do prefer the anime/manga character designs and a few minor deviations from manga canon. However, Tsuiokuhen's aren't bad; they're just not what I'm used to.

Himura Kenshin aka Battousai, once an idealistic youth is now a jaded assassin on the razor's edge of insanity. One night, he kills a shogunate supporter with a strong will to live and is wounded on the cheek. This wound bleeds whenever he assassinates someone. Whatever he drinks tastes like blood. This guy is on the line.

One night in the rain, Battousai is attacked by a chain-wielding assassin ninja of the shogunate. Battousai finishes the assassin off by turning the ninja's weapon on himself. Blood spatters everywhere, including on a young woman with sad black eyes who saw the whole thing. Battousai debates whether or not to kill her for witnessing him.

Instead of doing so, he takes her to the Kohagiya Inn where the Isshin Shishi are holed up. The young woman named Tomoe is hired on as a maid-of-all work. Little by little, she and Battousai begin to draw closer to one another as she questions his "job". Battousai regains some of his sanity and the sake even starts to taste good again.

However, things are afoot. Will Tomoe tame Battousai, or will tragedy rip them apart forever?

The only things I really dislike story wise are how Tomoe's brother Enishi is reduced to nothing more than an observer instead of an active character in the story and how the Binding Forest scene plays out; a bit too melodramatic compared to manga canon.

However, these are minor problems, easily ignored if one takes Tsuiokuhen as its own story rather than as strictly canon.

All in all, definitely a great OVA and a good way to introduce someone to Rurouni Kenshin, especially if they can't stand Pokemon and DBZ.

Wow, it seems as if a lot of people just scored this the same way the previous reviewer before them did. Now this is a really good OVA, certainly better than Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Seisahen and Rurouni Kenshin - Ishin Shishi e no Requiem, but it's hardly worthy of all those scores of perfect tens.

Trust and Betrayal is far less humorous than Rurouni Kenshin, and I think if Rurouni Kenshin had been more similar to this OVA, I would have enjoyed it more. The viewer gets to see a younger Kenshin, how he's used as an assassin, and the past he later chooses to atone for. We also get a look at his relationship with Tomoe, and how it differed from his relationship with Kaoru. Plus, you get to see Saitou and Okita in battle. That's what makes this a great prequel to Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan.

The animation and character designs surpass those of Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan, and the music's not bad either.

The dub isn't great, but it's better than the dubs for Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Seisahen and Rurouni Kenshin - Ishin Shishi e no Requiem. J. Shannon Weaver isn't intolerable as Kenshin.

The Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal/Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuiokuhen DVD costs $15.00 - 25.00.

*THIS REVEIW IS FOR RELFECTION ONLY*

I thought it was very very good. Truly a work of art, and a classic in my book. A little slow moving for an Action series, but very good. But I really didn't mind it being a little slow My gripe, at times I got a little lost and confused, but quickly bounced back. And it had wonderful music too, absolutley a beautiful Original Score. Truly Oscar Worthy. The only problem with it is, that it was used a bit too much. When you use music to much it loses it's power for other sequences. Composers have to becareful with that. But it really was good. If there's a soundtrack out there, I'll be getting it. Not the best of Animation, but oh well, it is an OAV, and Anime is underbudgeted anyway. What I really like is, even though it was action, it had a lot of drama in it. I don't like mindless action/violence, riddled with drug content, and/or strong language. I may be a guy, but I'm a softy for the sappy stuff. Esspecially with Romance. That's what I always love about Anime, there is some kind of Drama. "Kawaii overdoese" as was stated on the discriptors of Anime Network's parental guidence warning. And they mean it. Nice use of music, visuals, cast, and theme. Great use of thematic elements, to give it the emotional punch. And a really sad ending too what happens is *******CENCORED*********

If you are a Kenshin Fan, and you havent's seen this, you should!!!! It is wonderful, and even if you are not, if you like action/adventure, or your a sucker for the sweet sappy stuff (like me) you are bound to love this. I storngly recommend it!

Wow. That's all I can say. A true masterpiece, the type I would use to convince my friends that don't like anime to give anime a try. Personally I watched about 20-30 episodes of the TV series first, and I recommend doing that. I can't imagine going from these OVAs to the TV series; just would be too much of a shock. Nice to get a feeling for Kenshin and then dive deeper into his past. JMO. And I can't imagine watching these and then not wanting more.

Even though the art may not look like the original anime, it really shows the deep dark past of our present rurouni and makes us understand more of what he is today. I really used to hate Tomoe (before watching this), but this changed my view about her. The plot is perfect. The scenes of the past and present that appears does not confuse but intrude you. One of the best romance/angst anime i've watched.
For the Reflection OVA, its another great one. You can get to see the bond that Kenshin and Kaoru created... how much Kenshin understands her and how Kaoru accepts him... this is really really touching. I must tell you that you better get those tissues ready.
If you can get the songs (at www.samuraihouse.com) trust me it'll touch your heart to no end...
You should really watch it. What are you waiting for?

Coming from someone who has seen naught of the Rurouni television series, but found the previous OVA to be one of his favourite anime of all time, this 60 minutes of Rurouni Kenshin is resplendent, venerable, and just all round brilliant.
Having not seen the series, and being uninterested in seeing the series, I have the handy ability of not feeling betrayed by it. Quite the opposite actually, I feel that the lightheartedness and humour of the series might cheapen the experience of the OVAs for me.
The character Kenshin traversed the two shows with no loss of depth or character, and indeed the viewing of his beginning and end, even without the middle that the show portrays, is emotional and profound. Koaru was given suitable depth, and despite only gracing my television for an hour, she left a lasting impression, and also added something more to Kenshin's character. The supporting characters were all well done as well, all of them distinct and believable.
I particularly liked Sanosuke.
Hiko, who deserves his own paragraph, was just as cool and prfofound as ever.
The fight scenes were brilliantly animated and exciting, accompanied by intensley engaging music. However, as another reviewer mentioned, there was something different about them, that made them less appealing.
The music was just fantastic, and provided the ova with an overall score of better quality than that of the first. Though no particular song stood out like In Memories- Ko-To-Wa-Ri!
Ultimately this OVA felt a bit rushed, and, at times a bit disjointed, but it is more than satisfying. Not quite as good as the first, but a fitting addition, and end.

(Spoilers ahead)
With beautiful animation, a heartbreaking storyline, a tragic ending and awesome music this is a must-see. The OVAs tell the story of Kenshin's past, how he earned the name Hitokiri Battousai and what made him vow never to kill again. It also shows him and Kaoru in the future, their son Kenji and what he turned out to be like, and how they died. If you want to watch them be sure to have a box of tissues nearby.

This is a very amazing OVA indeed. I watched the TV series first, so it definitely took getting used to the character designs, but overall, I was really impressed. The depth into which it goes into Kenshin's background is absolutely amazing! Still today, Rurouni Kenshin maintains its stand as one of the top 10 anime series. I own the entire series, and it was worth every penny! Another nice thing about this series is that there are plenty of fansites out there, many of them good, to learn further entertain you! I loved these DVDs. Quite apart from enjoying the story, I found that the animation was so beautiful and fluid that I couldn't take my eyes off of it. The characters, even though they are all very beautiful, were made to look very real. The swordfights were lovely, and the backgrounds and attention paid to detail such as the art on the hotel walls and doors made it a treat to watch. The music was beautiful, and it was also interesting to see a story played out in a period of history that I didn't know much about. The story is very slow-paced, but that fits the style and time period of the show well, making it seem traditionally Japanese--very distant, calm, and unhurried. However, to enjoy this show, you do have to be willing to be patient and pay attention.
The one problem I had with the story was that I was not particularly fond of either language track. They both did fairly well most of the time, but there were some things that I thought didn't translate well to the subtitles, and some things I thought weren't dubbed as well as they could have been. The story is very serious, and if it's not handled carefully it could seem ridiculous or corny. But I think both language tracks realized this and they obviously tried hard to make it poetic, and given the rest of the show I was more than willing to overlook this.
I would reccomend these DVDs to anyone who is in the mood to sit down and be serious and romantic for a few hours. And I think you do have to be in the mood for this one to enjoy it. This story, like a Knig Arthur story about knights and damsels, is a beautiful, romantic story about battles and soldiers and chivalric love. It really is summed up well by its own tagline--"Romantic Tales of the Meiji Era."

When I first read all of the glowing reviews for the Samurai X OVA I thought I would be bitter and dissapointed when I saw it, since it couldn't POSSIBLY live up to expectations. Well... it did...and futher proved that my natural intuition is utter crap. This/these DVD(s) is/are absolutely AMAZING! The character design is gorgeous, the plot is thought-provoking and deep, and the dialogue is (gasp!) meaningful. Shocking I know...Moving on, the Samurai X OVA has successfully combined action, romance (In a good way! Not a sappy way...), history, and revenge...oh yes and some gore as well... However, I wouldn't recommend this title to people who are expecting it to be akin to the TV show. It is most certainly NOT! But go ahead and watch it anyways...you will become a rabid fanatical obsessor! You will I tell you! On a side note Kenshin is just an all-around nifty (Oh that sound too feminine! He um...kicks ass!) character. Plus I like pretty boys so...Oh don't take my gushing about it or word of mouth as your personal opinion. Just watch the damn thing and see what all the fuss is about!
You're still reading this crappy review of mine! Go buy this DVD now...get hopping!

I recently finised watching Trust and Betrayal, the directors cut. Best dang $28 I've ever spent!!! The characters, OUTSTANDING!!! Tomoe... she's beautiful, as is all the art and animation in this film. The music track is perhaps the most moving that I have ever heard put to an anime, and the ending brought tears to my eyes. I would recommend this series to EVERYONE. PS. Tomoe's hot.

Himura Kenshin, a incredible samurai. In the beginning of this anime, he is walking along with his family. When suddenly they are attacked by a group of theives. They kill everyone. Then he picks up a katana himself and trys to defend the rest of the family. His sister protects him by giving her life. Then he is saved by a huge man with amazing sword skills. Shinta (Kenshin) then buries the entire family alone, plus he buries the theives who killed them. The man takes him in as his subordinate. He then learns to skills of Hiten Mitsugiri Ryu. The master also names him Kenshin. Well, later on he meets a woman named Tomoe. There is just something about this woman. Later she sees him kill a assassin. She says, "you made it rain blood...." He then has to decide, to let her live or to kill her. This anime has the best art I have ever seen. However, I do not really recomend watching the series. The OVAs however made me great, but the series is the total opposite.

Let me start off by saying if you have not bought it yet, buy the Director's Cut, which is basically the movie version.
There is little to say that has not already been said... Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal is an awesome piece of work. It's beautifully done, and really makes you care about the characters you're watching. I love the TV series (I think it's funny *dodges knives and sticks*) but Kaoru always struck me as selfish and immature. Tomoe is a real lady, and outshines Kaoru in every way I can think of.
Young Kenshin is quiet and slightly creepy, like you'd expect of an assassin, but even so, you don't need him talking to explain things to you.
This movie embodies some of the best principals of Japanese cinema, and is worth seeing simply as an example of that, if not as one of the best anime movies out there.

If you have seen and liked the TV series for Kenshin, then this may not be your taste. The story is a dark and sad tale about Kenshin's life before he became a wandering swordsman. Don't expect any of the happy and light hearted moments that you might of seen from the TV series. The plot is excellent, but since I don't like the animation style, I simply can't give it a 10 across the boards. Nevertheless, if you don't know how and why Kenshin has that cross shaped scar on his face, then you shouldn't miss the OVA for the world.

Well when i first saw Rurouni Kenshin I was all excited because he was a samurai and samurai are awesome. But I was dissapointed when i found out there was no killing. So my opinion of Kenshin was that he was a coward samurai without a will to kill. This special change my opinion of Kenshin completly. After seeing him in the specials i found my self a new hero. no it wasnt Kenshin. My hero became Hiko kenshins bad ass master. He is the only reason i watched Rurouni Kenshin. Once you see him kill a man you know kenshin is mearly just a crappy aprentice. Oh yeah a reveiw of the special. I hate going with the crowd because im the odd one, but no one could ever say this is a bad anime. Its clearly a masterpiece. I honestly also nearly creamed my self as well.
So if you want to find an easy way to orgasm watch this anime it keeps your hands free at least.

It's dark and tragic, don't expect another Rurouni Kenshin episode. This isn't some happy-go-lucky romantic-comedy action/adventure flick. This is a work of art with true emotional impact.
It's probably one of the best movies I've ever seen. I'm not saying it's good for an anime, I'm saying it's brilliant for a movie, any movie, period.

This is one of the best anime ever made. It is perfect in every area in which an anime should excel in. The story, impressively told in a mere 4 episodes, is epic and gripping. The characters are fascinating. The music is wonderful and always fits the specific scene perfectly, enhancing the emotion of the scene. The animation is absolutely gorgeous as well as realistic (except for maybe some of the blood spraying all over the place). The only fault I can possibly think of is that it might be too violent for some people's tastes but considering the story is about an assasin it has a reason to be there. It's not violent just for the sake of being violent and making a "gritty" atmosphere. Rurouni Kenshin is an epic story and this four episode OVA is arguably the best part of it.

YES. This is the Rurouni Kenshin ultimatum. It reveals his past, which was so often brushed aside in the normal series. and YES. it also reveals why he came to be what he is in the present. TOTALLY ~ "UUMMPH!!!" a super rating from me.

This is THE anime. we're not talking any amatuer flick like Samurai Showdown or Ranma1/2. No God NO!! This is top of the line shit we're talking about.(Tomoe IS HOT AS HELL^.^) Cairu from the new Kenshiin is just kinda there, plus the fact that everytime that Kenshin gets in a fight she turns on her waterworks and stands in the way. There will probably be no other flicks like this out there so I'd get this one any day. ( just imagine how many more viewers they would have had if they had kept the same person)By the way I wonder who else besides me thinks Cairu's student and Sanouske are having an affair? If you love anime youll love this. (By the way I wonder why Kenshin's master disappears for so long then returned when the killing was over? Stuck in a whorehouse with too much Sake maybe?)

i had my doubts about this. in that awful show on cartoon network, kenshin sounds like a gay irish yoda wannabe and doesn't kill anyone. when i saw this thanx to my boy t.j., i was astounded. i loved it and now watch it every night. greatest anime of all time or until i see a better one. if u want to see the true kenshin, buy it, watch it, love it, build a shrine for it. im telling u for anime lovers, its the next bes thing to sex. great action, wonderful animation and great story. it kind of reminds u of the old akira kurasawa movies, instant classic. and thank God it's not dubbed. all four episodes give u an insight into edo period japan. if your a true anime fan you must see this master piece.
should and will be remembered in history just like akira and gundam and ghost in the shell, blood the last vampire. excellent company for an incredible movie. the show just doesn't seem like the beloved kenshin in this ova. in that piece of absolute shit, kenshin seems older, happier(maybe hes had a little too much sake and sweet marry jane) and gayer, kinda like mr. garrison off of south park. i mean so what if he gets head from that whore in the show, hes bye. this oav is top of the line. after seing this master piece i wondered how in the hell did kenshin become a raging homo. just watch this oav, avoid the show or else you may queston your sexuality

This is one of the best anime ova series I have seen. Some people don't like ova's but this is one of them that is quite worth a viewing. The art in Kenshi is absolutely wonderful with so much depth in the design of these episodes. I truly enjoyed these, they elaborate on the reasoning behind why Kenshi wont kill any more. I would tell any one that likes Kenshi to buy these episodes tosee the full story.

The original Rurouni Kenshin comic series is made by Nobuhiro Watsuki. In the last volume (V.28) Watsuki noted that the 2nd part of the comic series (which is the story in the first Samurai Anime OVA series )is so badly plotted and he regrets making it. However, the Anime OVAI series is the revised version of the 2nd part of the comic series, which is much more compressed and intense and is better plotted. The OVA is more like the story Watsuki wanted to create in his comic in the first place. It's complimented by the comicer, and of course is praised by the viewers.
But I must say that the art in the comic is better than the one in OVA. And personally I like the second OVA series better, since it's more touching and is made with better art and anime in my opinion.

Let me start out by saying one ting. Ooooh my... that was so beautiful. Just everything about it was beautiful. The music, the design, the truth of it... all so good.
All of it was historically correct. If you're really interested in the Samurai or bushido you must see this.
The ending ALMOST got me crying but not qutie just cause that's me. I do admit there was quite a bit of violence but what can I say, that's the way it was in those days.
The OVA isn't at all as corny and cheezy as Rougoofy Kenshin the TV show. Truthfully, I thought the TV show wasn't all that great but I won't get in to that (it IS fun to watch though).
The OVA will not dissapoint you (see above reviews... told ya so). It's almost like an Akira Kurosawa film. if you enjoy his, please watch this. A definate buy!
Oh one more thing... when OVA2 comes out, get prepared for some more goodness.

As you read this, keep in mind that I have yet to see the seond DVD, but I was bored so I decided to srite this now beforei forget.
*sigh* I know I am in the vast minority when I say this, but I actually like Rurouni Kenshin the series better than the OVAs. They're still an excellent example of anime at its best, though.
The music was mediocre, in my opinion, but the sheer visual pleasure is worth the $28 bucks. The fight scenes are cool and the story line is intrigueing and depressing. The plot is sorta dark and distubing so don't expect any comic relief.
There are a couple of "bad" words. (Well, at least what I consider bad words) Other than that and a lot of violence, its fairly clean. If you don't want to spend the money on it, you should at least try to see it. This is a classic anime that shouldn't be missed.

The Rurouni Kenshin OVA (hereby refered to as "RK") is a work of art——a masterpiece of anime that will be remembered for ages. RK is based on historical accounts of the dying days of the Tokugawa Era when revolution has broken out against the Shogunate. A group of rebels known as the Ishin Shishi planned to overthrow the government and begin a new era of peace. The most feared of the assassins was called the Hitokiri Battousai, and this is his story.
The RK OVA revolves around Himura Kenshin's days as a young revolutionary in the heat of war, so it helps if you're familiar with his character. In fact, I would advise that you would not watch this OVA without having seen the first two seasons of the RK TV series. Although it is not necessary, it makes the OVA even more incredible if you've already been introduced to the characters in the "present" (TV series) before going back into the "past" (OVA).
RK is full of incredible swordfights, awesome animation, a brilliant musical score, and a magnificent story so wonderfully told that it cannot be missed by anyone. You owe it to yourself to pick up both DVDs ("Truth" and "Betrayal") even if you have to slay a hundred men to get them.

If you told me there was such a thing as a bloody tale of murder and romance done gut-wrenchingly well, I'd say your crazy; if you told me it was Samurai X, I would retract my "crazy" statement and whole-heartedly agree.
Samurai X is one of the few anime that I have seen that left me speechless throughout and after the ending. Absolutely stunning.
The art and animation are nothing less of superb. You feel as if you were actually living during the Meiji restoration while watching this. Some of the best backgrounds ever. The only problem I have with the animation, or lack there of, is the insertion of live-action elements, i.e. water, fire, and smoke. It is extremely annoying to watch something animated and then cut to a fire heating a kettle.
The characters look much more mature and, well, better, when compared to the television series. Kenshin doesn't look anywhere near as goofy in the OAV's, and dare I say, more like someone who would assassinate.
The orchestral background music totally encaptures you while watching the show.
A plus for this OAV series is that it is not a continuation of the television series. If anything, it is more of a prequel, and could be watched anytime while watching the television series.
Also, the OAV series is much more serious in tone and not some average comedy that it could've been. I couldn't have been any more grateful.
If you are a fan of romance, or even anime (and I would assume you are, since you are at this site), you owe it to yourself to check out this modern-day classic of anime.

Samurai X is nothing short of incredible. The breathtaking art and animation are complimented by excellent character designs and a beautifully executed story.
There's very little I can say about this OAV series that hasn't been said. It's the tale of Kenshin, an idealistic swordsman who wants to use his blade to fight for the oppressed. As Japan's most deadly assassin, Kenshin meets a mysterious young woman who will change his life forever...
This is essentially a love story set against the backdrop of historical Japan, though liberties in historical accuracy have been taken. Even though we know what must inevitably happen at the end, the story is still touching, moving, and heart-wrenching. Everything, down to how Kenshin got his 'x' scar is tied into the love and feelings of two emotionally brittle political pawns. We feel for these characters, despite the minimal dialogue, and we empathize with them. This attachment to the characters is what makes Samurai X a stand out anime.
The visceral feelings it evokes will stay with the viewer for days.
The animation is top-notch, fluid and graceful during the incredibly violent sword fighting, and subtle and understated during the quiet moments. The backgrounds are lovingly rendered and richly detailed, one almost believes they are in old Japan feeling the sun and smelling the sake. The music is quite beautiful, and works with the picture, rather than overshadowing it.
In short, this is a wonderful example of anime. Though violent, the bloodshed is never glorified, and the sheer emotion and beauty of the series left me in awe. I recommend Samurai X strongly to anyone with even a passing interest in Japanese Animation.

Theres something so moving about SAMURAI X its almost hard to describe.
This is truly a tale that is not only well crafted but almost perfect in all the standards anime should be judged under. Its amazing how a cast of low-key characters can be so emotion and force that emotion from the audience without ever abandoning their monotones or solemn expressions. Love and betrayal come in so many forms during the four episodes of SAMURAI X it will leave you emotionally drained at the end as action is delivered in graphic precision and romance is presented in the most subtle of forms.
Everything, the story, the characters, and the animation are all so wonderful it overwhelmed me. Even if Im overstating it (which I most likely am) I assure you it will be one of the better purchases of anime you could make.

(NOTE: This review applies only to "Trust" and "Betrayal." I have not at this time seen "Reflection.") Gorgeous. Heartbreaking. Sweeping. Intense. Violent. It's all this and more. The artwork is exquisite, the characters are superb, and the story grabs you by the throat and refuses to let go. Those who have compared it to Kurosawa aren't just indulging in hype; it really does deserve the comparison. The violence, while graphic, is never gratuitous. If I have any complaints at all, it's that the series (particularly the ending) is so emotionally wrenching that I can't stand to watch it too often.

OH MY GOD!!!
Sorry... memories of this OVA caused an orgasm of pleasure.
This is probably the best samurai anime ever made. Hell, this could very well be one of the best ever made. It is the peak of its genre and a classic that deserves to be in everyones collection (preferably minus the title of...ugh, Samurai X).
The artwork is fantastic. It is some of the best out there, period. The swordfights are beautiful as well as exciting. The general darkness off Japan is just great and fits the storyline.
The story is great, revealing the character introduced in the TV series (of which I have seen the first 12 out of the 96 episodes) for what he was before he was the Rurouni. The plot generally keeps the historic plotting of revolution fairly intact and this, surprisingly, strengthens the story. It is truly a masterpiece.
The characters, in brief, are F***IN' SWEET!
The music is top quality and fit the era and feelings perfectly.
