In terms of style, I can give Hellsing a good amount of credit for it. Alucard is an unconventional anti-hero who is an ancient vampire possibly being the legendary Dracula with how uber-powerful the guy is. The characters, both ally and foe, have a good amount of attitude to them as they know what kind of people they are and live with what they do from the masculine attitude of Integra to Alucard's 'master-servant' relationship with Integra. The action sequences are fluid and it is quite a sight seeing clashes between Alucard and any lower vampire he is about to tear apart effortlessly with either his weaponery or power.

However, substance is a bit of an issue in Hellsing. Some of the characters who had a great deal more depth to their characters in the manga are reduced to two-dimensional archetypes. Alexander Anderson is the biggest victim of this as his character turned from a man devoted to the Christian faith with a great sense of morality to protect the living world from the 'impure' to a mindless, psycho killer with a fanatical obsession to his Catholic beliefs. There isn't even any depth given to Alucard's hatred of his own immortality and his admiration to those who naturally age and die. Not to mention that the presence of the anime-only vilian, Incognito, felt out-of-sync for the European setting of the series. The ending of the series seemed typical for the climax of past action anime titles that used such a conventional plot element (the hero is losing, but gains the power within himself to lay his enemy to waste).

Hellsing is worth a watch just to get a glimpse of how the manga series would look animated. Hellsing Ultimate, from what I hear, has a more faithful portrayal of the events from the manga so I would recommend you watch that once you complete this series.

Hey, i'm not a huge anime guy. I was, but not much. Mainly because they are too childish and annoying. This one is amazing. I originally saw it on Starz and was amazed. I was young then and liked all animes. Now, being the "seinen" type I think this is my all time favorite seinen anime. Actually its my all time favorite anime. The action is stupendes. The characters all have a dark, eerie personality. I havn't seen my favorite little section in a while (Blood Brothers) but even watching the slow beggining this show is fantastic. Of course it has its flaws (uncreative story line, lack of episodes, and sort of a boring start) it has so many good things about it that you really don't care. Of course other animes might get an overall higher rating (all 10's) but even with a perfect score these flaws are little and I still consider it to be my favorite. I know i've been saying the same stuff over and over (love it,perfect, ect) but I can't say much about this anime because everything besides the three flaws stated a pretty much perfect.

The whole genre of the undead has never been a favorite of mine. I am a very skeptical person and get frustrated with such things as zombies and vampires. However, I had heard nothing but positive things about Hellsing so I decided to watch it. There was never a moment of diappointment for me. Hellsing exceeds the cliché vampire stereotypes by placing Ceres into the mix. Her human thoughts and emotions make Hellsing much more relateable for me. The issues Ceres (Seras) faces regarding her newfound vampiric nature make for an engrossing story.
As the other viewers have mentioned, Alucard is one of the coolest anime characters. There is much more to him than what meets the eye.
The setting in Hellsing is equally as good as the characters. The gloomy atmosphere was created perfectly with dark tones that symbolized the troubled times. However, the bold colors that defined the characters stood out so that hope shone through the oppressing darkness.
The musical score is one of my favorites, ranking next to Cowboy Bebop. The soundtrack is eery and undefineable and supports the anime well.
Hellsing is not for everybody due to the strong occult themes and language (even the dub keeps the profanity at a max.). However, I think the statement that this series is only for people who like vampires and action is inaccurate. Hellsing can have psychological tendencies as well. Basically anyone who is looking for a smooth story with a hint of English class will adore Hellsing.

It is by far my favourite anime. It is what got me started watching anime in the first place. Yes his name is ALUCARD (the manga has his name as that also arucard doesnt spell anything backwards now does it?)
Yes he is Dracula, as the references to Vlad the Impaler (the person the myth of dracula is based on) and dracula in general are too strong to ignore. (although the name of draculas son was alucard...) (also the inscription on the coffin "the bird of hermes is my name, eating my wings to make me tame" is a brain buster...)
The music gets some getting used to, but after a while it fits in brilliantly. I also recommend watching the the previews for the next episodes, they are very funny, thats not much tissue paper... thats not much of a preview.........
2nd series is a joy to my ears and will be in my DVD player as soon as released!

To be honest, the first episode I watched turned me off a bit, but once you get used to the dark style of the anime, you can't help but love it.
Alucard is truly a memorable character, in the same class as Dark Schnieder in Bastard!
All the characters are interesting an fun to watch in battle, especially the Italian Catholic bad-good guy's swordplay, and my favorite character: Walter, with his string. Thats right, string.
If you don't mind the occasional dark anime, this is truly a well done piece of work.

Hellsing is a great addition to the vampire genre. It more then hints towards the Dracula/Tepes connection. It has that larger then human life feel akin to Anne Rices Vampire chronicles, at least when it comes to the true vampires. Its also got great action and story. And, you know that advice, Always leave the audience begging for more? This series definitely does that. Many want a Hellsing II sequel. Id like to see a sequel thats really is a prequel similar to the way Anne Rice did her Vampire books following Interview.

Best Fucking anime EVER!!! I first saw hellsing with a friend 3 months ago. She HATED anime, but she watched this series 4 times.
Alucard is the best anime charecteur ever. He's amusinginly freaky who enjoys a good challange. He Kicks D and Shido right off the anime vampire map.
The anime is so clean. No messy pics, and the charecteur arn't sluts. But the music didn't quite go with the rest of the series and the plot was ok.

Now here's an entertaining series concerning vampires to watch. Arucard is indeed one cool character, as is Seras Victoria, I don't really care about the Integra character though. Along with his sidekick (if I can even call her that) Seras Victoria, Arucard hunts down vampires that are out of control, and preying on humans, for his boss Integra's Hellsing Organization. The series itself isn't a long one, only running a mere 13 episodes.

Hellsing's animation and color tones are nice. The plot is a slight turn from other vampire themed shows that involve one vampire slaying others. I don't really like the vocal tracks on the Hellsing soundtracks, but the soundtracks aren't bad...more of an acquired taste. With pretty much no fan-service, and an interesting plot, I enjoyed this show quite a bit. Hellsing can't compare with the likes of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, but it's still a show of good quality. Hellsing, while not overly violent or grotesque, is obviously not for kids. There's cursing, killing, and minor sexual situations.

The dub is also very good, and was translated pretty well. Either actual Europeans were used to voice the British characters of the show, or the actors have had excellent lessons on dialect. With Crispin Freeman voicing Arucard, and K.T. Gray voicing Seras Victoria, I have no complaints about the dub. In fact, I prefer it to the original Japanese version. Hellsing is reasonably priced, so it's quality for a great value.

I very rarely rate an anime this high, but Hellsing stands out. It's a story about vampire hunting, using a rouge vampire. It's dark and moody, with just the right amount of blood and violence. This anime has style, but with only 13 epsisodes, it leaves you hanging.

I like vampire/horror animes so I had high expectations for Hellsing, but the lame bad guys, random characters, and undeveloped side plots left me somewhat unsatisfied. I thought Integra's story from childhood to Hellsing chief was interesting, and the stylish art and animation was impressive. Incognito did not leave much of an impression, and Integra's kinky 'sister' had no real bearing on the plot. Walter is a total badass though, and the weapons on display were cool. Officer Victoria was a bit too childish to mesh with the rest of the anime, but she wasn't a total loss. All in all, some impressive eye candy, intriguing characters, but a plot that's somewhat limited. Music was run of the mill, and I wish the series could have been longer to explain more of the story (maybe a season 2?).

QUOTE by Anonymous #886: "Yeah, Alucard is pretty obviously Dracula. And, yes, there is a second series that hasn't been released yet. You might have a music video for it on one of your Hellsing DVDs (it's on the first volume of mine), and it's called "Hellsing: Dark Psalm"."
So that's what that AMV on the first DVD was about and why the footage used was not in the first series. I watched it thinking how cool it looked, but wondering if it was just footage that had been cut from the frist series, so now I know. This also fits well with what I have heard about the second series.
The big question I have is; what happens to Sir Integra?
But, about the first series; I can agree that it is a great series; it was one of the best anime I have seen. I like the music, style, and use of a dark overtone.
I like subs better than dubs, but I found the dub to be way better than average (for a dub). The voices were the way I would have imagined the characters sounding in English. Heck, the first part where Alucard says "God damn punk" in the dub actually fits the lips better than the original Japanese "punk".
Still, the sub gives you more info (insight maybe?) sometimes due to the translation to English.
The only prob is that I think, as is suggested and based on what I have seen in the anime, that there is info that is in manga, but not the anime; I suspect that if I get the manga, that it will clue me in on details that I find lacking in the anime. Still, I say that for a 13ep series, this is even way above other anime!
I would say to get this series as soon as you can!

However, IMO, the one flaw I found in this series is that it just isn't long enough! It is so ASKING for a second season. The way we (spoilers I guess) see Anderson at the end, just suggests that its not over. Cool series. Lots of action, decent plot, interesting characters. And, you've got to love Alucard **cough**dracula**cough**.
Not extremely deep or anything, but if you like vampires you'll like this. It reminds me of the World of Darkness--creatures of the night with a mordern hip feel rather than the classic dramatic take. And, the best part is that it's a little different from the standard plots you see all the time in vampire stuff (not completely different, more of a mmutation of what we've seen a million times before).
Not for the romance/comedy lovers, but great for those who like lots of action with a plot.

Hmmm, Hellsing was actually a decent series but I felt disappointed after reading the manga. That's because the series was being made before the original creator had a chance to complete the series and the true story he wanted to unveil. They also weren't able to go back and fix this because once a creator hands his work to the animation studio, they have no control over it. I actually recommend the manga more, which should be out to you English speaking folks in the fall of 2003 by Darkhorse comics.
Well about the series...well it didn't really have as much of really huge plot and turned out to be fairly simple so you wouldn't get lost. It's more for you folks who just like to see people get all bloody and fire big guns pretty much. That's not to say I didn't enjoy that aspect though, it's just that kinda sums up the plot. Vampires are being artificially created, the Hellsing organization has Alurcard/Arucard as their vampire to hunt the other ones down. Actually, the true storyline, revealed in the manga, has to do with how the Catholic and Protestant church had a lot of involvement during WW2 and their own personal involvement with the nazis. The use of Alucard is pretty much an analogy for how the church uses God as a motive in hunting down "evil". But I won't get into it as much.
The music was pretty nicely done, from the opening to ending theme. The music really portrayed the mood of each scene. The animation was pretty cool too, like when Alucard fought Alexander Anderson. So I must give Gonzo kudos for that. Luckily Hellsing wasn't stretched out any longer than 13 episodes cause then that'd take away from the animation budget and then it would probably get more choppy at parts. Also, I really loved the more serious art style, as compared to more cartoony cutesy styles out there. The dark tones and shading really gave each character a darker appearance and really give the anime an eerie feel to it. All in all, a good watch, but nothing compared to the manga.

This series is simply one of the best I've had the pleasure of watching. It is also one of the few I would consider buying.
That aside, I will try to explain the series without spoiling it. ^^
The story focuses on the organization known as Hellsing, lead by Integral Wingate Hellsing. A formidable woman who commands a pseudo army in the name of God to exterminate the evil of London, she frequently uses the rogue vampire known as "Alucard" to assist in this.
Alucard is the main character of this series, and though another character known as Seras Victoria gets a lot of screen time, she is not as important to the plot development in my opinion. We follow the organization's endevours to the surprising end, albeit a rather abrupt one. :( Many will agree with me when I say the series was far too short lived. I do not know if there are plans for a second season (though I have heard rumors) but once you finish the series, you will be left with a feeling of, "That's it? Gimmie more damnit!"
To say the music suits the series is an understatement. The opening theme is probably one of the best I've ever heard and seen. This brings me to the animation. Such detail is given to even the littlest thing that you might find yourself sick to your stomach at certain parts if you can't handle gore. Animated stylishly and giving the vampire world a dark, haunting beauty, all I can say is that they could not have done a better job if they tried.
The reason I did not give this a perfect 10 across the board is because the beginning does lag a little, but that is due to character development and lasts only briefly. Some will agree with me when I say it is necessary, but others will just be interested in the gruesome killings, maimings, mutilations etc. These people also probably get their kicks from DBZ so their opinion matters very little. :P After a few episodes, you will see why this series receives such admirable reviews and hopefully come to love it as we have. Enjoy the show. :)

Agreed, almost in totality, 886.
One thing I must say, though, is that even having never seen a portrait of Tepes (knowingly) in my life, it still wasn't hard to identify the superimposed face in ep 13. The strong, ever-so-slightly middle age features with the iron grey moustache fit perfectly with the description given of Dracula by Bram Stoker, in his book, Dracula.
The superimposition effect, in my opinion, was a beautiful escape from the so-called "Soylent Green Moment" that would have occurred had he actually said whom he was.
If there's still doubt that he's Dracula, add to that the fact that he had been stored in the dungeon by a Hellsing ancestor- assuming he had the powers presented in the series, he'd most likely have laughed at the feeble attempts of Van Helsing & co to destroy him, and one can picture the moment just after the staking, where he gloops back together and does his smile at them.
And add to that the fact that, after expressing amusement at Incognito's choice of name, he says: "My name is a kind of anagram too" (or something, depending on who subbed your version).
Personally, I'd have preferred them to translate it as Alucard, if the letters are interchangable, that way the name IS actually an anagram of something. Other than Raracud.
Aside from that issue, the series is lovely. I especially enjoyed seeing England from what I can only assume is a Japanese perspective- reverence for, and power held by the Queen, claims of Britain being "a Protestant Country". People paid to be nice to you when you get off the Eurostar. The press actually paying attention when told that they are forbidden to report on a royal event. Plus there's the thing where they all speak Japanese, but that doesn't really count, does it? Funny to note that the one American (the helicopter pilot who finds Incognito's car) still gets to speak English.

Alucard/Arucard=Dracula
One at a time.
1) "It's Arucard not Alucard." Yes, but L and R are the exact same characters in Japanese. That's why native Japanese speakers have trouble distinguishing between the two when they learn English and may instead say something like "Engrish". This has been the subject of several jokes. The short of it is, Arucard and Alucard are the exact same thing in Japanese, it's English speakers that try to make a distinction between the two where it doesn't exist
2) "But everyone knows that Alucard is the traditional name for Dracula's son!"
Whatever. I am unaware of this being done in just about anything else but the Castlevania series. If you want to get technical, it was a name for Dracula far before it was a name for his son. It started of in a (I believe Chaney) horror film way back when where Dracula ran around in human guise calling himself "Alucard" until people finally caught on to the fact that Alucard is Dracula spelled backwards. It's been a campy tradition to call Dracula Alucard when you want to "hide" his identity ever since. This has been done since at least the '40s.
3) "What happens in the last episode?" As has already been pointed out, the face change that Alucard does is quite obviously that of Vlad Tepes, the "real" Dracula. If you want to find out more about him, do your homework. And, yes, he does impale Incognito in good ol' Tepes fashion, in one end, out the other.
Yeah, Alucard is pretty obviously Dracula. And, yes, there is a second series that hasn't been released yet. You might have a music video for it on one of your Hellsing DVDs (it's on the first volume of mine), and it's called "Hellsing: Dark Psalm".

Ok, just a piece of clue for people wondering who is Alucard.
In one of the episodes, he says that 'Alucard is not my name, but that's how people call me'... So he is not the real Alucard (who is the son of Dracula and a woman)...
I think taht he is Dracula, or Vlad Tepes! The way as Alucard kills Incognito is the first piece of proof : the real Dracula (Vlad Tepes, voïvod of Walachia) lived during the XVth century and used to empale his victims (that's why Vlad Tepes was known as 'Vlad the impaler').
Second piece of clue : before Alucard kills Incognito, we can see the face of a man superposing on the face of Alucard... This face is the portrait of Vlad Tepes! (look at this site to see the similarity : http://bloodaddiction.free.fr/modules.php?name=Sections&op=viewarticle&artid=6 )
Well... If anyone thinks my interpretation is wrong, please feel free to add your own interpretation here.
ps: All apologizes for my poor english, I did my best in order to make as few mistakes as possible...

In hellsing the main character is Arucard who popular to many people is not Dracula and is actually spelled with a R insted of an L. He is a Hunter of the Gouls, Undead, Vampires and many Freaks. He uses the .45mm Cassual in the beggining and he later on gets the .13mm Jackel. In the first order he goes after a rouge priest vampire and trash talks to him before shooting him through Seras Victoria and into his heart. Then he changes her into a vampire. The next two orders are not real important except for Anderson the Paladin from the vatican escariot section 13. From there on it gets good. Two brothers attack the manor. And skiping ahead to the last orders are my favoriots. "I'll send you to the deepest pit's of hell and while your there you can lick the devils ass Incognito."
You must see the last battle and all of it in japenese w/subtitles first.
And there is no second series just one movie.

Alucard Is Cool the moment ya see bust undead with silver bullets outta his handgun!!! Wat vampire will wear cool clothes and.. smileS?? That has gotta be cool. I find that the episodes were kinda short but i guess there has been alot of action. Fans of action, gore and GUNS watch this!! Although some people may think it may be too satanic...
Da Kid, I think Alucard is not dracula... HE IS DRACULA!

Ok, just to enter the realm of name arguing... Alucard... Is 'Dracula' spelled backwards. No further comment necessary.

It will make your skin crawl with excitement everytime Alucard enters a scene. Victoria will allow you to watch the series without becoming udderly lost to the darkness of it. Hellsing will advance the plot... I sat in total rapture as I watched it, completly involved in the story and animation. I even heard the manga was better.

To a lover of vampire stories, Hellsing is king. The best thing about it is in it's mystery (remember Eva?). Sure, it starts out rather slowly, but it's that sense of "what the...who's that" that brings you back to watch more. I must say I feel rather stupid because as I was watching the last episode for the first time, I realized the Alucard (please, lets not start an argument over the name) aspect tied the missing plot holes in perfectly. I mean, come on... It surely bacame obvious that he was, and if not, is closely related to, the lord of the night himself, Dracula. Stupid me had been noticing the obvious Hellsing reference, but the story completely led me off the path of "Draculization", which is, I think, the best part of this anime. You can forgo the obvious and get lost in the story. In short, this baby is a must-buy for anyone who enjoys a dark mystery.

A very good anime, i dont think its the best out there. Why are there only 13 episodes when someone finds that out post it up here or email me sheldonmacks@hotmail.com.Anyway back to what i was saying, each episode is about 22mins some a bit longer like 24mins. The main sprite(character) Alucard is the only hope for an organization call hellsing. The first episodes are boring if you ask me but it wouldnt make any sense to buy the last action packed episodes without knowing what the characters are talking about some of the time, it gradually get more and more interesting as you watch each episode so dont get angry when you see the first 3 episodes the action will come, but it is not like a supernatural anime that you just have to see. Some time in the episodes you might be in a state of biwilderment but you will catch on as watch more.
Kaneda you think Alucard is dracula's son or something??? post your answer.

Simply put hellsing is brilliant from all angles of critique, the animation and style of the series is amazing, the character alucard is cool and heroic whilst all the other characters are interesting as well. The music, accentuates the best part of the action taking place whilst the episodes are all amazing, i'd definetly suggest buying the series. 10/10 all around.
Btw can't wait for the second series, and think about this when you look at it, whats alucard spelled backwards .. and
NO ITS ALUCARD NOT ARUCARD, its just the way they pronounce words in japan that made stupid north american subbers make that mistake. ggrrrr.
